Text from Pages 1 - 52 of the 1964 volume:

Man, growing up, erecting towers in the sky, must look to his foundations. Care must be taken lest those spires of humanity -- Freedom, Love, and Wisdom — topple. The foundation is education. A sign of man's care, the building of a school house. The old school is destroyed : Panelled walls and lofty ceilings Splinter before the wrecker's weighted ball. Down comes the old; the rotted timbers fall. Machines rumble through thick dust clouds As the rubble is swept away. All is consumed by fire. But the idea remains: To learn is to grow. To grow is good. Growth requires change. And from fresh soil, Seeded and annointed by ancient tradition, The new school arises. The cornerstone of a new cornerstone is set, Beneath bright skies and warm suns, Amid tall pines and ragged rocky peaks, Orange steel girders are erected. Then the crane, which once swung the ball, Lifts into place thick beams of clean wood. The whole is laced together, firmly, Jointed and bolted. Ceilings and walls form. Thick coats of bright paint and, at last, The final artisan's touches are applied. A new school house stands created Out of the spirit of a man moved by the idea: To grow is good. Growth requires change. A NEW CHAPTER The first Westwood High School annual published in 1919 states, Ten years ago Indians roamed over the spot where now there is a modern little city. From this same source we learn that in 1914 a grammar school had been erected and that high school classes were first held in this building. By 1918 a separate high school was necessary. The first high school was a two- storyframe structure located on the elementary grounds and included a large gymnasium, study rooms, recitation rooms and several other rooms but no rooms to rent. A full page picture in this first annual shows a neat Westwood sur- rounded by heavy timber with Mount Lassen, during a period of eruption, clearly visible in the background. Fire completely destroyed the high school in 1927 and The Red River Lumber Company immediately erected a new high school at Third and Greenwood Streets. This building was constructed of heavy posts and beams with walls and ceilings of ten-quarter pecky cedar and was to remain a Westwood landmark until its demolition in 1963. The 1928 annual comments that with the new building a new organization was established--a six-year high school with Junior and Senior divisions, a new type of institution. The closing of the mill in 1956 resulted in the closing and boarding up of the building, and high school classes, after nearly 40 years of separate quarters, were again moved to the elementary school. Steadily increasing enrollments in 1961 and 1962 made it apparent that Westwood would again need a separate high school. The voters of the school district wholeheartedly approv- ed a bond issue to make this possible. As the 1964 annual goes to press the new high school nears completion and another chapter in the history of Westwood will be completed and a new chapter started. LEONARD H. This year the F.H.A. girls strove to make their club more active in the final year at this school. They started with a Christmas progressive dinner which turned out to be a lot more fun even than expected, not only for the members, but also for the mothers who took part. For the remainder of the year they sold cook books. The profit went for their closing Installation Dinner in May in honor of Laura Jeffries, the only retiring senior officer this year. Coached by Mr. Deese, Westwood's wrestlers, representing almost every weight class, took part in 9 meets including the Northern State Tournament in Chico. Working hard for 2 months, the team did very well for a first - year team; everywhere they went they were complimented for their progress. Next year at the new high school, Mr. Deese and the team hope for even better results. Let's all turn out next year and show the wrestlers the same enthusiastic support we give our other athletic teams. With frost still covering the ground, our gridders began tearing up the turf with de- termination, spirit, and the desire to play ball. JUNIOR VARSITY CAPTURES THIRD IN LASSEN TOURNAMENT The Junior Varsity team ended the season on a winning note, defeating Herlong to capture third place in the Lassen Invitational Tournament. This victory culminated a season in which the team, directed by Mr. Narwold, constantly improved. The Junior Varsity's performance at the end of the season led Coach Narwold to take an optimistic view for the team's chances next year. VARSITY CAPTURES CHAMPIONSHIP AT LASSEN INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT There were moments of brilliance, but the Varsity failed to realize its potential until they swept their division to take the trophy at the Lassen Invitational Tournament with consummate ease. Toward the end of the season, excellent performances were turned in. Thrilling victories over Quincy, Portola, Loyalton, and Greenville came immediately to mind. Much of the team's improvement must be credited to Coach Overton's guidance in addition to the competitive desire of the team. John Lipparelli, outstanding center and top scorer, was named to the All-League team, a high honor and one he fully deserved. Lipp shoots Victory huddle Bob, Paul, and Mike struggle for loose ball.
