District Superintendent LEONARD H. RANDALL The Task... of our high school is to provide an environ- ment which will encourage students to grow and to achieve worthwhile goals. For some, the program must provide a solid and ade- quate foundation for continuing education at higher levels. For others, we must offer the opportunity to acquire skills necessary to fill places of value to society. For all, the school must assist in de- veloping insights and understanding of the problems and the progress of the human race. Leonard H. Randall Board of Trustees A1 Fregulia, Victor Simpson, Dr. H. GAA furnishes pot-luck dinner before caroling. GAA Dishes Up Christmas Spirit Christmas spirit was given a healthy boost by the evening of caroling presented by the Girls' Athletic Association and Block W. The caroling was preceded by a pot-luck dinner furnished by GAA. Members of both organizations were then asked to sing for their supper as they toured the streets, singing Christmas carols. Block W Sings For Its Supper Fortified by the pot-luck served up by G.A.A., the members of Block W lent their assorted voices to the roving Christmas carol concert with the girl’s organiza- tion. Although December nights in Westwood have a tendency to be rather nippy, the low temperatures could not reduce the lettermen's enthusiasm. Cold weather promotes togetherness among carolers. FHA Hosts Regional Luncheon Strangely enough, this year, which we optimistically refer to as our last year in the old building has seen Westwood playing host to an unusual number of conferences, meetings, and so forth. The size and facilities of the building, how- ever, did not seem to hinder the Future Homemakers of America or their guests, as they enjoyed a re- gional meeting which featured a group discussion on the topic of Women in Today's World. Dick Dead-Eye at his dirty work. r i HMS Pinafore” Sails Again Westwood's vocalists shed their som- ber robes for the brighter dress of England in the 1800's as they presented a two-night run of Gilbert Sullivan's HMS Pinafore. When professional costumes failed to arrive, the performers improvised their own, and not even the closing-night illness of their lead- ing man kept the curtain from going up on a fine, highly entertaining production. A token of appreciation. BACK ROW: Adan Perez, Gordon Hutchison, Walt Trumbo, Sam Sloper, Paul Del Rosa. Carroll Little, Bob Little, Mike Mentas, Kent Davidson, Bill Bowman. Football Team Joins Feather River League The 1963 edition of the Westwood High School varsity football team will compete in the Feather River League. Although Westwood's 1962 football season was, in the main, unspectacular, hopes are high for a winning team in '63, as three junior lettermen are returning, along with seven sophomores and at least eight freshmen from the junior varsity. J. Lipparelli races for a tackle. B. Lipparelli and M. Mentas gang up on an opponent ball-carrier. B. Phillips cuts out with the skin under protection of R. McNeely. M. Mentas chases a loose one for a Westwood recovery. J.V. Football Team Wins 3, Loses 2 The junior varsity football team, under the direction of Mr. Narwold, won three football games this year while losing two. The J. V. won over Chester twice and beat Lassen in the season finale. This was the first year that a J. V. team has been organized at Westwood High. Next year's prospects look good for the J. V.'s, as the team will open play in the Feather River League. Some of the mainstays of the J. V. team this year were: Steve Haas, Frank Troutman(who scored 24 points for the season to lead the point makers), Carroll Little, and Jerry Rather. These players and the others on the squad did a fine job all season long. BACK ROW: Frank Troutman, Ken Ross, Steve Carr, Bill Bruner, Jerry Rather. MIDDLE ROW: Mr. Narwold, Carroll Little, Ron Enders, Steve Mentas, Jerry Rather. FRONT ROW: Bruce Wallace, Steve Haas. BACK ROW: Bob Little, Herb Shute, John Lipparelli, Mike Bertoluzza. MIDDLE ROW: Bob Lipparelli, Rich McNeely, Paul Del Rosa, Ken Haas. FRONT ROW: Bill Phillips, Gary Lovell, Ken Diggs, Paul Speers. t r Team Scores Ten Victories K. Diggs lays one up for two. The A basketball squad battled its way to a winning season this year for the first time in six years. The total re- cord for the varsity was 10 wins and 9 losses. In getting these ten victories, the varsity won over Lassen by a score of 61-57 for the first victory over them in eight years. The varsity also trounced the faculty by a score of 51-35. Westwood beat every team in the Feather River League but Herlong at least once to place fourth in final league stand- ings. This was a great accomplishment, and it was the first time in seven years that the varsity was in the upper division. Ken Diggs was high point man for the season with 205 points and an average of 12.8 points per game. John Lipparelli had 151 points and an average of 9.4 per game. Gary Lovell made 134 points. “A squad takes time for counsel isti luring tlghyLa ssen game. The Lumberjacks also had a total of five games which were not put onto the score sheet, Westwood beat Big Valley twice in the early part of the season. The score of the first Big Valley game was 52-31, the score of the second was 64-33. The Lum- berjacks also went to the Lassen tourna- ment and won their first game by a score of 49 to 43 over Happy Camp. B’S ’ Have Slow Season The B basketball team, coached by Mr. Narwold, had a rough season, with only two games (out of seventeen) to their win record. The first victory of the season was over Big Valley by a score of 29-27. The second victory was over the second string A team, a game which they won by a score of 21-20. High-point man for the B team was co-captain Mike Hunt who scored 176 points this season. The other co-captain and senior on the team was Bob Rather who scored 108 points for the season. Mr. Narwold expects great things of the B team next year, as Steve Haas, Alfred Valdez, Charley Hutchison, Frank Troutman, Ron Enders and Bill Quadrio are returning. C” Team Could Not Find Victory Westwood's sparcely-manned C team did not manage to score a victory this year. However, Mr. Garcia said that the prospects for next year are much improved because of the seventh-eighth grade basketball league which was started this year. This league has enabled junior high students to develop their cage skills far beyond what they might have been without it. Members of the C team this year were: Alfred Valdez, Bill Cordoza, Joe Kringler, Steve Haas, Steve Carr, and Jerry Rather.
