THE CHIPMUNK FOR 1959 EDITED BY: The Journalism Class Westwood Unified High School Westwood, Lassen County California SENIORS PAGE 6 FACULTY PAGE 11 Table Contents ACTIVITIES PAGE 19 Dedication To a man and woman who live before us in a silent manner but who have set a wonderful example to all who have been under their leadership or in association with them in any way ... To two people whose qualities of friendliness, loyalty and sportsmanship have won them a place of high respect, deep admiration, and warm affection among both the student body and the faculty. With deep appreciation for their service to us as teachers and friends we dedicate this, the 1959 CHIPMUNK, to Mrs. Hermine Clagett and Mr. Robert McQuain. A MESSAGE FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT The huge black stacks, once the symbol of Westwood, are gone. Gone also are the men who felled the trees, drove the trucks, manned the saws, the green chains, the dry kilns and performed the countless other duties necessary to the functioning of one of the world's greatest lumbering operations. Gone, too, are the people whose dreams were fulfilled as a prosperous community built its homes, its schools and its churches to in- sure for it's children the maximum in develop- ment and opportunity. Life, however, for those who remain is no less important than for those who have gone. While this community has only a fraction of its former population each home is as important and the churches and the school are as neces- sary and deserve the same support and care as in the days that are gone. Utilizing to the fullest every opportunity for personal development and accepting the responsibility of services of others remain real and binding obligations. Mr. LEONARD RANDALL, SUPERINTENDENT Our Superintendent, Mr. Randall, and District Secretary, Mrs. Amy Bangle OUR SCHOOL BOARD From Left to Right: Mrs. Earl Speers, Mr. Ted Hoskins, Mr. Vern Healey, Superintendent Randall, Dr. H. G- Levin, and Mr. Victor Simpson. Mr. Jeffries, secretary of the Board was not included in picture. Without our School Board our public schools would have a slim chance for existence. We, Americans, proudly boast of our free educa- tion. The men elected to this office must be cour- ageous, dependable, and trustworthy. The highest standards of education, as well as many other school functions, lie in the hands of these few men. Our School Board deals with all problems confront- ing our school. We are grateful for the careful consideration the Board gives in arriving at each decision. Mr. Louis Jeffries Administrative As sistant Well, let's see now . . While the Journalism Class was small, its members made a determined effort to pro- duce a well-liked Lumberjack newspaper and worked long and hard to make this, your 1959 Chipmunk a real success It was not always easy to meet Lumberjack and Chipmunk deadlines and many after- school hours were contributed by your Journalism Staff. They are, indeed, deserving of a great deal of apprecia- tion by our student body. Our Journalism Staff “Our Ski Club?” Our Ski Club, under the able direction of Mr. Murray Nelson, got off to a very slow season with little or no snow remaining on the Coppervale slopes until after February 15th. However, following the February 15th week-end bliz- zard, skiing picked up on the slope and Mr. Nelson helped many a novice skier improve his balance and skiing ability. Many a girl was found on the slopes also. With the new tow rope installed and tow engine tuned up the skiers really enjoyed their treks to Coppervale. 24 C. S. Yell Leaders Our Yell Leaders are certainly worthy of the praise and admiration of the student body for their efforts in en- couraging school spirit and keeping our teams' morale at a high pitch. Without the four girls seen here in these two pictures leading us in school spirit we would have had a rather uncheery cheering section. Thanks loads, girls!! From the Left: Eliza- beth Schofield, Carol Oxford, Connie Mendoza and Jill Bingham. Our Radio The Radio Club is a new addition to West- wood High's Co-curricular organizations. Mr. Ron House, the advisor to the club, inspired an interest in radio amongst several students and the radio club was on its way. The club is de- voted to the learning of radio reception and transmission. The club has installed its own transmitter and receiver and has contacted many overseas stations. The members are also trained to pass their amateur radio license exams. Best of luck to this new addition! Club FRONT ROW: J. Miranda, J. John- son, and T. Gailey. Although the season was short and it began on a sour note with a 60 to 0 loss at Loyalton, there were many opportunities for rejoicing. A 42 to 12 victory over the Portola Junior Varsity brought the team to its feet and from there on out they were hard to beat. After a hard-fought battle the Lumberjacks lost to Surprise Valley 12 to 20. They beat Beiber 60 to 6 and then almost upset highly-rated Chester in the final game of the season 26 to 12. Hats off to the 14 Varsity men and the six Junior Varsity Men who stuck it out through thick and thin, and also to the student body who gave the team its moral support!
