Mr. John C. Lucas. Superintendent You are entering a divided world, and upon your decisions and actions rests the fate of life as we know it. Our nation and the other democratic freedom-loving nations face a grave menace today in the expansion of the socialistic totalitarian nations. If we are to survive we must define clearly our democratic ideals, and then make these ideals explicit by our actions in our daily life and in our home communities. The essence of the uniqueness of our concept of democracy lies in our belief that the individual is of paramount importance. In support of this ideal, our forefathers fought the revolution; and upon this ideal of individual freedom they erected the structure of our great social and cultural heritage. This is ours today to strengthen and build upon that we may pass it on to the future gener- ations unimpaired. Neither political or social privilege should ever come to one by right of birth according to our American ideals. The members of each new generation must stand alone as individuals, and their worth be judged without reference to race, religion, or parentage. Merit and effort alone should win. These are our goals. And while even here in this greatest of nations we find bigotry, intolerance and racial prejudice—in so far as we retain a clear vision of our objectives, in so far as we continually strive to attain and advance these ideals, we strengthen our nation and ourselves against the onslaught of the forces attempting to undermine and destroy democracy. To you, therefore, I leave this challenge; make yourselves workers for democracy today—believe in it, teach it, live it—lest you become the mourners of democracy tomorrow. 2
