Westwood Junior-Senior High School, Westwood, California QlUa nu Jt 953 VOLUME XXXVIII WESTWOOD JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL WESTWOOD, CALIFORNIA Mr. John C. Lucas. Superintendent You are entering a divided world, and upon your decisions and actions rests the fate of life as we know it. Our nation and the other democratic freedom-loving nations face a grave menace today in the expansion of the socialistic totalitarian nations. If we are to survive we must define clearly our democratic ideals, and then make these ideals explicit by our actions in our daily life and in our home communities. The essence of the uniqueness of our concept of democracy lies in our belief that the individual is of paramount importance. In support of this ideal, our forefathers fought the revolution; and upon this ideal of individual freedom they erected the structure of our great social and cultural heritage. This is ours today to strengthen and build upon that we may pass it on to the future gener- ations unimpaired. Neither political or social privilege should ever come to one by right of birth according to our American ideals. The members of each new generation must stand alone as individuals, and their worth be judged without reference to race, religion, or parentage. Merit and effort alone should win. These are our goals. And while even here in this greatest of nations we find bigotry, intolerance and racial prejudice—in so far as we retain a clear vision of our objectives, in so far as we continually strive to attain and advance these ideals, we strengthen our nation and ourselves against the onslaught of the forces attempting to undermine and destroy democracy. To you, therefore, I leave this challenge; make yourselves workers for democracy today—believe in it, teach it, live it—lest you become the mourners of democracy tomorrow. 2 dedication Mr. Leonard Randall “He restores my faith in human nature In times of indecision, throughout our lives, we need a friend to give us understanding and impartial advice. Here at Westwood Junior-Senior High School, our principal, Mr. Leonard Randall, fulfills this need. He guides and helps us with an ever-forward looking ideal of making our school a congenial and worthwhile place of learning. For these reasons, we respectfully dedicate THE CHIPMUNK of this year to Principal Leonard Randall. 3 ... Contents... Sidney Lanier The forests of our land help to make our country beautiful and strong. Even before the country was established, lumbering was a major necessity. The wise and careful use of this great national resource by lumbering concerns sets all of us an example for the use of our resources. Because it has great importance today, we are proud to make the lumbering industry the theme oi our yearbook. Principal's Message Mr. Leonard Randall, Principal Contrary to common belief, getting the things we want is not a major problem. Most of us are so constituted that the things we really want we are able to get. Therefore, wanting the things we should have becomes a matter of greatest importance. Education must consist of more than the acquisition of skills for getting. It must also include developing a desire and appre- ciation for great fundamental values such as truth, consistency, loyalty and fairness. Our wish for everyone connected with Westwood Junior- Senior High School is that the fundamental values shall be recog- nized as of first importance. 7 . . . During this year we started the new Junior High Student Court, attended the playday in Susanville, and held a skating and a swimming party. In our Sophomore year we held a school skating party, the first activity oi this kind to be held in Westwood High. The big event of our year, the Red and Green Christmas Dance, was a. great success. Also, we held another swimming party. We moved into our Junior year hopefully awaiting our class rings. Our only party was a ski party held at Coppervale. The Annual Stardust Dance, which we sponsored, was a huge success. We also attended the Junior-Senior Picnic and Junior-Senior Prom. Now at last the big year has arrived, one which we will never forget. We took second place in the song and yell contests. Our Valentine's and Odd Ball dances were considered a success. Mother Is a Freshman, the Senior play, was a success financially as weli as socially. Finishing up our year in Westwood High we held a banquet, sneak day, attended the Junior-Senior Picnic, Junior-Senior Prom, and Baccalaureate. Then graduation put an end to our high school days. 15 BARBARA ATKINS FRANK BELDEN GAA, 1-3; FHA. 1; Ski Club. 3-4; Football. 1-4; Baseball. 3-4; Pan American Club. 1-3; Class Yell Block W , 4.
