PRIIKIPRL’S messAGE A long time ago Emerson wrote, The true test of civilization is not the census, nor the size of cities, nor wealth—no, but the kind of a man a coun- try turns out. Today, those words still ring true. MR. G. R. HASKELL Principal If we accept the purpose of education in our country to be the improvement of our American democracy through the development of the individual, what kind of a man should we be trying to turn out ? He should certainly be armed with knowledge and skills needed to become a pro- ductive citizen. He should have an attitude of respect for the dignity and worth of the individual. He must understand that selfishness and self-centeredness must give way to a new emphasis on shared values and the promoting of the general welfare. In order to guard his personal liberty and freedom he must be willing to take an active interest, as a good citizen, in all levels of government. Our warmest congratulations to our graduating seniors! We have faith in the future of America be- cause we have faith in them. lUk v j BOARD OF TRUSTEES FIRST ROW. Uft to right: Mr. Jack Sawyer.
