WESTWOOD JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL c h i p m u n k 19 5 0 VOLUME 4 4 WESTWOOD JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SHOOL • WESTWOOD, CALIFORNIA FOREWORD... In the Lassen area of the Sierra, high above the Feather River Canyon, a life close to nature goes hand in hand with our pursuit of knowledge in preparation for adult life. We are in- deed fortunate to enjoy the hunting seasons: deer, duck, geese, pheasant, dove, bear, antelope, and fishing. From November to March, students ski at the Sulphur Works on Mt. Lassen. Three or four lakes supply us with skating: Almanor, Walker Lake, Mill Pond, and Chester Causeway. Hiking, swimming, and camping are other sports enjoyed in the area. DEDICATIO!!... The 1950 Chipmunk staff dedicates this edition to Mr. Richard Scarlett, art teacher and coach, in recognition of his long service to the students of Westwood Junior-Senior High. He has taught us to appreciate the usefulness of art In our everyday life and the beauty which it may bring into our homes. Mr. Scarlett also coached the B basketball team to the 1949-50 championship in the Feather River League. TABLE OF COlUEmS •ADMINISTRATION • CLASSES •ORGANIZATIONS • SPORTS •ADVERTISEMENTS Just as the mother quail leads her young to food and safety, so the administration and student officers lead the youth of our high school in growth and maturity. ADMINISTRATION PRIIKIPRL’S messAGE A long time ago Emerson wrote, The true test of civilization is not the census, nor the size of cities, nor wealth—no, but the kind of a man a coun- try turns out. Today, those words still ring true. MR. G. R. HASKELL Principal If we accept the purpose of education in our country to be the improvement of our American democracy through the development of the individual, what kind of a man should we be trying to turn out ? He should certainly be armed with knowledge and skills needed to become a pro- ductive citizen. He should have an attitude of respect for the dignity and worth of the individual. He must understand that selfishness and self-centeredness must give way to a new emphasis on shared values and the promoting of the general welfare. In order to guard his personal liberty and freedom he must be willing to take an active interest, as a good citizen, in all levels of government. Our warmest congratulations to our graduating seniors! We have faith in the future of America be- cause we have faith in them. lUk v j BOARD OF TRUSTEES FIRST ROW. Uft to right: Mr. Jack Sawyer. The student body officers showed great skill in the fulfillment of their offices this year. 10 ADminiSTRRTIUE COUflCIL EXECUTIUE COmmiTTEE The Administrative Council, being the highest court of the school, helps govern student and school affairs. The Council is composed of ten members, five students and five faculty members. The faculty members are Mr. Ray Haskell, principal; Mr. Leonard Randall, vice-principal; Mr. Joseph Swift, director of student body activities: Mrs. Margaret Frodsham. registrar; and Mr. Orrin Hoffman, director of athletics. The student members are David Edwards and Dorothy Goins, senior repre- sentatives; Tommy McDonald, junior representative: Harlan Warwick, sophomore representative: and Lyle Cloud, student body president. Throughout the year the Council was con- fronted with a number of problems, both school and com- munity. One of the problems concerning the school was un- excused absences and tardies, which resulted in the assign- ment of detention periods. The community problem was traffic. In the Council, a student committee was formed to improve the safety habits of our students. This committee worked to- gether and put on assemblies concerning the safety of the students and adults of Westwood. The Administrative Council was very successful in working out the problems which confronted them. The Executive Committee meets each Monday during 6th period under the guidance of Mr. Joseph Swift. It is composed of all student body officers. In addition, the tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades each have three elected representatives. The powers and duties of Executive Committee are: 1— To make and enforce any rules necessary for the better- ment of the school, its life and interests. 2— To grant charters to clubs and other school organizations. 3— To approve all athletic and special awards upon recom- mendations of the coach and principal. A—To supervise all matters concerning extracurricular ac- tivities and the payment of bills. 5— All awards recommended by teachers will be subject to the approval of the committee. 6— Shall grant awards other than those mentioned above. As we approached our Junior year we were quite active, sponsoring the Junior Stardust Dance, and sharing the Junior-Senior Prom and picnic with the Seniors. During the first quarter of our senior year we had a Junior-Senior Football Game. This is the first year that a game of this sort has been played. The game was followed by a Senior Pot Luck held at the Westwood Jr.-Sr. High School Auditorium. The second quarter we got off to a good start by having a Barn Dance at the Moose Hall. The Valentines’ Dance, which we sponsored, was held in the third quarter and open to the student body. The last quarter was filled with many activities including Baccalaureate, Senior Banquet, the Junior-Senior Picnic, the Junior-Senior Prom, Senior Luncheon at Lassen Junior College, Senior Field Day at Cal-pine Resort, the Senior Play, Girl Shy, given May 19, 1950, and to finish up the gala year, Graduation. 15 CECIL ADKINS Transferred from Shaffer Union High 3 Basketball 3 DARRELL BARNES Journalism 3, 4 Annual Staff 4 Dramatics 2, 4 National Thespian Society 4 GERRI BOSTIAN Transferred from Berendo Jr. High Dramatics National Thespian Society 4 LYLE CLOUD Student Body President 4 Ex. BLOCK “UJ” GIRLS’ The Girls' Block W has been very inactive this year, but during the 2nd semester a meeting was called and officers elected. The purpose of this organization is to set off the outstanding girl athletes and create more interest in sports. Also to make important de- cisions for the year's activities. All girls are required to have 1,000 points before entering this organization. BOYS1 The Block W was very inactive throughout the first semester; however, in the second semester they became more active. The organization had a large membership showing that there was a large amount of interest in the organization. Before a student may enter the organization, he must have earned a Block W in a varsity sport. One of the purposes of the organization is to increase participation in com- petitive sports. This was accomplished this year by ihe large turnouts for our teams. 44 G. fl. R. SENIOR-JUNIOR The Senior G. A. A. has been very active this year under the supervision of Miss Anni Ufer, advisor, and Dorothy Goins, president. Softball was the first sport this year. Each class elected its own captain. Due to the bad weather conditions, softball playoffs were canceled and volleyball was started. These playoffs were very exciting with the seniors winning first place. Basketball was greeted enthusiastically with both teams offering close competition. After these group sports, such individual activities as bowling, tennis, badminton, and table tennis followed. Memorable highlights of the season were the hilarious initiation of new members, the playday at Greenville, and our own playday here, and numerous sales. The Paul Bunyan Day at Westwood this year proved to be as much fun as the original one which started last year. TJ16 end of these activities was marked by the annual banquet, held at the High ochool auditorium. New officers for the coming year were announced. SOPHOMORE-FRESHMAN , participated in the same sports as the Senior G. A. A. every Monday and Wednesday. There are more members in this group than in the Senior group. M ty • « fl.« the pheasant is hunted seasonally by the students out-of-school hours, so football, basketball, track and baseball are scheduled to take their seasonal place in the sports picture at Westwood. SPORTS ORRIN HOFFMAN RICHARD SCARLETT TONY MARRAZZO Coach Coach Coach THE VEflR in SPORTS In past years Westwood High has competed against schools more than eight to ten times its size, but in the sports picture 1949-1950 the Lumberjacks turned to a new and smaller league which enabled us to fight for championships or ties for first place. The new league also has pepped up school spirit and the team's morale. Let us run back on this year's sports and see how well we have done. First, our mighty football team took the field and came out in second place, playing strong Quincy for first. The next season we followed was the winter's basketball. Our A's tied for first against Portola and our B's'' were terrific; no one could touch them for speed and team play. With the championship win, B players were awarded gold basketballs. In the spring, track and baseball seasons opened. Taking track first, we shall see how the boys did. Everyone knows that track is built on at least ten different positions, with each man having his special field. The most outstanding were the dash and mile runners and the pole vaulters. In baseball our chances for the championship were great. Having beat Portola out for the championship last year, the team's hopes were the same this year. To the coaches . . . thanks for the teams of which we are so proud. 51 FIRST ROW left to right: P. Trujillo. L. Schuldies. H. Tyler. G. Ayres. G. Aldrich. F. Cochran. D. URRSITV FOOTBALL This year's Varsity football team, asking no quarter and giving none, had a fairly successful season, win- ning 4 games and losing 4. The boys played well in every game. Losing their championship game, they took second place in the Feather River League with Quincy taking first place honors. SEPTEMBER 24, 1949—Alturas vs. Westwood at Westwood. Alturas scored in the first quarter and held the seven point lead until the third quarter, when the Lumberjacks came back to score their only T.D. A 90-yard march cinched the game for the Modoc Braves. Final Score 14-7. OCTOBER I, 1949—Greenville vs. Westwood at Westwood. The first quarter was unprofitable for both teams but then Westwood made 4 T.D.'s in the second quarter, and from there on the team ran wild. Westwood scored 6 times, and made a safety and 2 conversions. Greenville scored once in the fourth period to end the game 40-6. OCTOBER 15, 1949—Westwood vs. Portola at Portola. Lee Roy Schuldies intercepted a pass on the first play to set up a touchdown for Westwood. Stoppel played a good game making 2 T.D.'s and passing 2 more. A spectacular touchdown was made by Ayres. Westwood held Portola scoreless and won the game 37-0. OCTOBER 8, 1949—Quincy vs. Westwood at West- wood. This was undoubtedly Quincy's game but West- wood never gave up. A 25-yard pass from Florez to Stoppel in the third quarter gave Westwood their only T.D. Final score 26-7. OCTOBER 22, 1949—Westwood vs. Greenville at Greenville. Florez’s passing arm scored 18 points for West- wood and then he ran for a good touchdown: West- wood went on to win 43-0. OCTOBER 28, 1949—Westwood vs. Quincy at Quincy. The hardest fought game of the season was this game. By winning this game Westwood would have a tie for first place. Quincy scored their only T.D. in the second quarter. They held their thin lead till the final gun. Score 6-0. NOVEMBER 5, 1949—Portola vs. Westwood at Westwood. This game was not such a pushover for Westwood. They fought to win 12-6 over Portola, with Florez and McDonald scoring for Westwood. Final score 12-6. NOVEMBER II. 1949—Lassen vs. Westwood at Susanville. Once again for the annual game with Lassen Union High School the Lumberjacks came back defeated but, not without a fight. Lassen scored in the first quarter, twice in the third quarter, and once in the fourth. Westwood started their march too late, though they scored twice in the final period ending the game 25-12. 52 Block That Kick Westwood vs. Alturas Caught Behind the Line Westwood vs. Alturas Knock Down-Drag Out Westwood vs. Alturas 53 FIRST ROW, left to right: B. With the quarterback calling of Carlo Smythe, the team did score in their games. Coach of the team was Ferd Florez. Next year we may expect to see some of these young hopefuls representing West- wood on the Varsity. 54 Westwood vs. Alturas Forward Wall The Kick-Off 55 G. AYR £S FULLBACK J. FLOREZ HALFBACK F. In the beginning of the season the boys were slow to catch on to the pride of winning and then like a fire, they started winning game after game. Drawing the season to a close found our A team tied with the Portola five for first and championship. It was a heart-breaking game with Westwood on the bottom end of a 31-36 score. However, set for revenge, they played in the Lassen non-league tournament to take second place after outplaying both Portola and Alturas and losing first place to Lassen. •Line-Up Class Position J. Their seven game season was with Susan- ville—3 games; Greenville—2 games; Chester—2 games. The D team, being quite the opposite of the C’s, won 2 games and lost 5. Their season op- ponents were of the same schools as the C's, but in the D division. 60 BASEBALL TRACK The Lumberjack 9, winners of last year's Lassen- Plumas League championship, lost only 4 of last year's men, and had about the same team. Florez and Isbell were the main batteries, while the rest of the field was held by mostly all veterans. Orrin Hoffman was coach. SCHEDULE April 28—Westwood vs. Greenville at Westwood. May 5—Westwood vs. Quincy at Quincy. May 19—Westwood vs. Portola at Portola. May 26—Westwood vs. Lassen at Susanville. The track team this year had a good field of men from which to pick, and this added to the coaching of Tony Marrazzo who gave our boys a good year. The first meet was held in April, and plans were made to compete against Davis April 15, Corning April 22, and one here at Westwood April 29. BASEBALL FIRST ROW, left to right: R. Bokelman. R.
