For Programs Abroad I '-CIM, Q !'W Westwoad's first A.F.S. student, Ken Evans, senior class president. Ken's family in the Netherlands include, left to right1Mrs. Flinlc, Anie, Mr. Flink. Standing: Eildert, and Harry, During the past summer, Ken Evans, Westwoods first American Field Service student had a wonderful experi- ence. He iourneyed to the Hendrik Flink family in the small farming community of Kiel Windeweer. Ken remained eight months with this family, of which he was the sixth member. He encountered no language barrier with either of his two brothers, Eildert and Harry, or his sister Anie, for they had all taken English courses in school. However, neither of his parents spoke any English at all. Soon Ken taught them a few English wards, and along with the Dutch he had learned from his lessons during his boat trip to the Netherlands, they could communicate enough to get along. Ken found many of the customs of the Dutch people quite different from those in the United States. One of these was the fact that most people rode bicycles rather than driving cars. He also found the climate to be very different from that of Arizona's. Even though Ken was glad ro return to the United States and Westwood, he agreed that he would someday like to return to Holland and his adopted family, Using the wooden shoes borrowed from his Dutch brother, Ken Evans digs potatoes for his mother.
