W.H.S. Receives Exchange Student From Italy The Westwood Warriors were honored with the presence of Raffaele Reda, A.F.S. Foreign Exchange Stu- dent for the T966-67 school year. Raffaele was born in Taino, a small northern city near the Swiss border. His family later moved to Riccione, Italy, where he has since lived. His father is a Warrant Officer in the Air Force, and his mother is a housewife. Raffaeles trip took about T5 days, including a TO day voyage on the ship Seven Seaslf' He then boarded a bus in New York and arrived in Mesa on August 8, where he was welcomed by the John Durham family, with whom he lived. One of the hardest things for Raffaele to become accustomed to, was to stay in school until ten after three, as he was used to going to school six days a week and getting out at twelve-forty-five, at which time the family W Sv- an Urilnni ff .. -- . fqeld war an 90 I... The John Durham Family with exchange student, Raffaele Reda, center back, would have the main meal of the day. He found his classes much easier here, because in Italy, he had as many as twelve subiects a week. The classes were rotated and each day his schedule changed. Some of the more unusual subiects were Italian, philosophy, and chemistry, which included the study of anatomy. The dating customs were very much different for Raffaele also. In Italy, dating takes place in the afternoon, notthe evening. The talented enchange student was a member of the Westwood High School Orchestra where he was a violin- ist, an instrument which he has played for four years. Raffaele also enioys playing tennis and riding his Vespa motorcycle. Four Students Chosen El Salvadore students. Marilyn Titcomb, Warren Greene and Peggy Sears. June 20, T966 was the date ot departure for Marilyn Titcomb, Peggy Sears and Warren Greene, who traveled by train to El Salvadore in Central America. They were the Westwood students who took part in the exchange pro- gram sponsored by Alliance for Progress. From the state of Arizona, there were a total ot 37 students, who traveled to the Central American State. Each student had a family to which he was assigned to live with in the capital city of San Salvadore. The students learned of the program through their Spanish classes. Personal interviews were next, and then letters ot recommendation had to be obtained. The dating process in El Salvadore was very different 24 GOVERNMENT forthe students. Teenagers ot El Salvadore did not go out without a chaperone or a group of teenagers. There were parties almost every night and many ot them were formal, The group enioyed trying many new types ot food. The meals consisted mainly ot rice, beans and tried bananas. A large maiority ofthe schools in El Salvadore were private, and only the very poor went to public schools. Cold running water was available in all fairly modern homes and many more automobiles than expected were observed by the students. The students returned August 21 on a train seven and a halt hours late.
