f ka. r, . f ,i .f-s yi,- I , The Spanish Southwest The Spanish people have played a significant part in the discovery, exploration, and settleirient of the South- west. Their influence is felt today in facets of our life. . The first white man to set foot in Arizona-iterritory was Marcosif de Niza, a Spaniard in search of gold. He was followed by other adventurers seeking mineralewealthgfi Although they found not the treasure they sought, they remained, and gradually realized a much greater one. Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries often accompanied the Conquistadors, and they were the first to make serious attempts at colonization. These missionaries were also the first teachers in Arizona, instructing the Indians in the white man's religion and ways of life. Father Eusebio Kino was one of the earliest missionaries. He founded the mission of San Xavier del Bac where he not only taught the Indians Christianity, but also instructed them in raising crops and livestock. This early form of educa- tion was extremely important and continued until 1827. In such missions were combined the adobe construc- tion of the Indian and the style of Moorish Spain. One of the finest examples of this type of construction is San Xavier. This motif has also been used by modern archi- tects to a wide extent. The Spanish influence is felt in other ways. One in four Arizonans is of Spanish descentg and the culture of these people has sharply influenced our own art, religion, education, and music. .fs fs-'J I 4' 1.3 , 'S V k-'Xl xA ' , , -4 .ffk.2f1- -F up K 6' 1' ev ' ' ' ' I . - . ,. f if , .,, p.. . -3- f ' - 'v ef : f mi' , , ' A i,,'-1.-'77s , 4, , I L,,, ,r I4 , 1 ' 'I W' fr- 4 Q, xr ,My 4 l . x- - , in A I jyjji ,Q ,,7i.,.f 7,3 ,.
