DOROTHY SHOUSE Department head Biology B.A., Univ. of Wisconsin M.A., MacMurray Coll. Interests: gardening Lab Stud Emphasized Biology, the science of living things, is designed to help students de- velop an understanding of and an interest in plant and animal life. A survey is made of both the animal and plant kingdoms with major emphasis on anatomy, physiology, and diseases of man. Two new courses were added to the biology curriculum this year. Senior biology was available to those students who had successfully completed one year in both biology and chemistry. This course offered more laboratory study and was conducted by Mr. Mounts. The other new class was an ex- perimental course sponsored by the National Science Foundation as part of the Science Curriculum Study Program. Many new items of equipment were purchased this year including a stereo-microscope. This instrument permits the student to dial any available magnification with the image in view. I I ,,.. 4. in Science Curriculum Along with Westwoodls expanding class enrollment three new teachers were added to the Physical Science Department. Mr. Ben Albert and Mr. Ray Campbell joined the faculty this year. Mr. Campbell came at the semester to replace Mr. Dave Martin. The third teacher, Mr. William Burlingame, was not new at Westwood but new to the Science Department as he taught math the past two years. Advanced chemistry and physics were two new classes added to the pro- gram this year. Another course taught was general science, which prepares the high school student for more advanced science classes. Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it can undergo. It helps the student understand everyday life. Physics, the study of energy, its changes and uses, was approached from an experimental and research standpoint. In order to enroll in this class students must have taken algebra and geometry. CLETE MILLER Department head Chemistry B.S., Arizona St. Univ. M.A., Indiana St. Coll. M.S., Union Coll.
