WESTVILLE, IL 61883 TABLE OF CONTENT Activities p. 4 Academics p. 34 Sports p. 50 Clubs p. 82 Faculty p. 104 Freshman p. 108 Sophomores p. 114 Juniors p. 120 Seniors p. 124 Advertising p. 149 DEDICATION TO: BARNEY VILK The 1985-86 Janus Staff is dedicating this years yearbook to Mr. Vilk our principal here at W.H.S. Mr. Vilk has been in the school district for 35 years. He graduated from Illinois College in 1951. After he graduated he came to Westville and taught at Central Jr. High School in Westville for 2 years before coming to the High School. Mr. Vilk said he got into teaching and coaching mainly because of athletics. Mr. Vilk had been a coach for two years at Central Jr. High School, ten years as head basketball coach, and five years head football coach here at W.H.S. Mr. Vilk feels that the greatest changes that he has seen in Westville Schools over the years is the change of attitudes and responsibilities of the students. When asked w hat he felt was one of his greatest accomplishments Mr. V'ilk said that he has helped, in some way with students to accomplish their goals. Mr. Vilk also feels that his greatest challenge, that he has faced as a principal is like being in the middle of a tug of war, and trying to make both sides come out ahead. As a principal Mr. V’ilk acts as an advocate for parents, students, teachers, and the administration, getting all sides to agree mutually and reach an understanding. Mr. Vilk’s secret for getting along with people, is being a good listener and being himself. Mr. Vilk taught and coached a few members of our faculty, among these are Mrs. Anna Hill and Mr. Jack Hardy. Mr. Hardy commented on Mr. Vilk as being one of the most dedicated teachers and administrator that the Westville School system has employed. He was also a dedicated coach in his earlier years at Westville. and will always be remembered by his former athletes. Mr. Hardy feels that Mr. Vilk s philosophy is and always has been the individual needs of the students. Mr. Vilk also coached and taught Mr. Tovey, who has been a teacher here at W'.H.S. since 1978 and is still teaching here. He says that the dedication that Mr. Vilk has displayed towards the young people of Westville is second to none. He is truly a credit to his profession. Among the others he has taught and coached is Mr. Watson, our former assistant principal for 5 years, who comments that Mr. Vilk is a very kind and considerate man dedicated to his profession. “I never heard him downgrade or criticize any of his teachers or faculty ’. The Janus Staff has greatly appreciated his contributions over the years. W e congratulate Mr. Vilk on his years of dedication and service to this school district. The writers make a pact not to say anything to Valentina about the romance murders, for fear it would ruin the T.V. special. Everythings going fine, until Joy Darling falls out of the closet dead as a door nail. Valentina declares she will find the killer, but Walter Ly-decker, her manager, is trying to get her to sign a contract, but Dr. Wintergreen is having her write a book on vitamins. This makes Lydecker furious and they get into a Tight. Then everyone goes elsewhere. While Pearl is looking for an earing, a look alike Valentina jumps out and tries to choke her. Everyone is convinced that Valentina is the killer. She then figures out that the person is Simon Grundy, the person she destroyed on a radio show the previous year. Just as everyone is about to take the vitamin B, Valentina points out that the killer is Dr. Wintergreen. It comes out that Joy wasn’t killed, he died of a heart attack. Wintergreen goes to jail while the others prepare to meet in New York for a new T.V. special. 'You’re a sick man Lydecker, eat more protein.' “Charmed?” Scott really ‘helps' out for the festival. This year they have a new sponsor, Donna Pasley, she made sure they were at the meets on time and she took care of their fund raisers and money. The wrestlettes stayed behind the wrestlers all through the year. Despite the hardships and troubles they were put through, they still had fun cheering on the wrestlers on at the district regionals and sectionals. Yearbook has the duty for capturing high school memories. Only the dedicated few realize the difficulty in this. The Janus Staff had a slow start in the fall. The first deadline was moved back. After mid year the staff got rolling. There was a change in structure enabling new ideas to flourish. The staffs biggest drawback was photographs, so with the addition of new photographers they were able to hurdle that harrier. The dedicatd few should be very proud of their efforts. Good CAMPUS LEADERS Don Jeffers and Michele Foyer Kyle Huber and Todd Burch We asked a few of the campus leaders why they thought they were chosen as campus leaders, and here are their responses. Don Jeffers said he feels he was elected as a campus leader by his attitude towards speaking what he feels might be right and what could go wrong with his friends and acquaintances and being courteous and friendly to fellow classmates. Jerry Beckley said that he feels he was elected a campus leader because of his outgoing personality and the ability to make something funny out of a bad situation. Michelle Foyer said that she had no idea, but she said it could be that she was so athletic. Todd Burch said he got it because he got enough votes to be elected. And last but not least Kenny Vandermuelen. Kenny said he feels he was elected campus leader because he is an outstanding person, and he’s gotten no respect until now.
