Janus 83 84 Westville High School Signatures The Labor Day parade has been a tradition for many years in Westville. and Westville High School has always participated. This year's Labor Day Queen was Cathy Lutchka. The W.H.S. band marched in the parade, and the volleyball team also participated. Many other students from W.H.S. were involved too. As long as there is a Labor Day parade in Westville. W.H.S. will always participate. 8 Homecoming 1983 The night of October 15. 1983. was a very special night at Westville High School. It was Homecoming. Everybody looked very nice, and the night was a success. The moment everyone had waited for finally arrived. The crowning of the queen. The Queen was Jenny Chittick escorted by Sean Wilkus. Junior attendant was Tyranne O'Riley, she was escorted by David Wimpey. The Sophomore attendant was Wendy Nightlinger. her escort was Kenny Vandermeulen. Stacey Sexton was the Freshman attendant, she was escorted by Eric Sloan. After the last dance was over, and the lights came on. Homecoming 83' was another memory, and another success. This year's Homecoming game was played on October 15. 1983 against Hoopeston. We lost 30 to 6. but the team still hung in there and played they're best possible. 10 11 Spirit Week 12 The Westville High 1983 spirit week was another success this year. Spirit week is always a lot of fun for the students at Westville. The Art Club's spirit shined through with the Coal Bucket window paintings. The participation and the paintings were great. The paintings were judged by some of the teachers. It was a hard decision but the Newspaper staff entry won. During spirit week a lot of kids dressed up and showed how much spirit they have. Getting dressed up was not only fun. it showed spirit and support for the school. 13 The Coal Bucket game this year was played November 5. 1983. at Westville. Westville played one of their best games of the season. Even though we lost, the school is still proud of the team. The final score was Georgetown — 30. Westville — 0. To lose and then keep trying is to be truly dedicated. 15 The traditional Sadie Hawkins dance was held on Thursday, November 10. The gals soon asked their favorite guys to go. and Sadie Hawkins was on it's way. The Daisy Mae contest was the first event. The contest was entered by. Cheryl Spickard. Debbie Roberts. Kim Salter. Kari Harris. Vicki Chapman and Julie Nicholas. At 9:30. Kari Harris was given the title of the Y983 Daisy Mae. and her date Jay VanDyne who was Lit' Abner. The next event was the bow contest. The winning bows were worn by Debbie Roberts and her date Todd Hawkins. The pompettes sponsored the dance, and they did a very nice job. Sadie Hawkins once again was a success. 16 Oh. Pokey. Let me out of here!” Here. Maynard. Try ta get up.” Medium Rare was an uproarious farce about a very unusual problem encountered by two new homeowners. Harry and Bunny Polk. The cause was Grandma Nina, a demanding and nerve-racking old woman who was left in the house by her daughter and son-in-law. Lucinda and Harvey Jolley. The Chaos began that night when Nina ordered a medium rare steak cooked just the way she liked them. Soon after. Nina's senile and abrupt friend. Maynard Cruck. arrived unexpectedly without knowing the Jolley's had changed residences. He and Nina exchange gossip and argue almost endlessly. Until Harry, or Pokey, as Nina called him de- manded that Maynard leave. Maynard soon returned though, the next morning at 6:00 AM during an Early Bird meeting of Nina's. Excitement began again when one of the ladies hurt Maynard’s back and Nina takes him to a chiropracter. While they were gone Harry and Bunny had come home and thought that Nina had run away and was lost. Through all the calamity Maynard lost his pants and thought Nina had been kidnapped. In the end. everything worked out fine. Nina decided to go live with Harry's secretary. Cora Prim, and Maynard planned to stay with the Polks until he found a place to stay. Well sir. I put up a fight, and that’s when I lost my Pants. 18 Make mine Medium Rare.” Medium Rare Harry Polk — Brian Richter Bunny Polk — Angie Falletti Harvey Jolley — Ed VanDuyne Lucinda Jolley — Kandi McElroy Nina Smeltenmelter — Becky Latoz Maynard Crock — Norris Porter Cora Prim — Tyranne O’Riley Woman Cabbie — Heather Michaels Irma Flipsnippy — Millicent Tooker Lumanda Mushings — Nancy Doggett Fanny Gooferloose — Kristi Ferpotto Twinkles Oopser — Dorene Boland Hertha Broadcrunch — Michelle Bayles Sergeant Blisters — Eric Sloan Officer Yingling — Tim Ritter Early Birds — Kelli Cline. Becky Latoz. Julie Vilk. the 1983 queen, presents Becky with her crown. Prom was truly special this year. The Junior Class put on a prom to be proud of. Instead of a live band Uncle Bob Taylor from DI02 came and acted as DJ for the night. It was a first for prom and everyone seemed to like it. Mid-evening the dresses began to show the legs with garters. A long line of girls and their dates cared out the annual garter removal. The boys gladly removed the garters from their dates legs to the cheers of others in the crowd. After the couples danced awhile longer the queen coronation was finally at hand. This year's queen. Becky Latoz was escorted by Norris Porter. This and all the other events of the evening made it a memorable night for all. 31 un) 1QJ?3P! J Janus Staff This year's Janus staff was very unique as far as yearbook goes. Each year deadlines come and go and are missed. This year the staff met each deadline with the help of sponsor Miss McBride and editor Lori Torbit. The rewards of meeting deadlines were much better that usual too. First, a pizza party at Miss McBrides house, and second a fantastic yearbook. The Janus staff made money throughout the year by selling football pins, key-chains. and patronages to make this an extra Special yearbook. Janus Staff: (front) Monica Sherman. Lisa Page. Under the supervision of Mrs. Brown and Co-editors Kandi McElroy and Nancy Doggett. many changes were accomplished by the staff. Money was raised by selling candy, posters, and stickers so the newspapers could be given away instead of the usual 25 fee. Hope of raising enough money to buy equipment to update the newspaper is a major goal set for the staff. Everyone receives the fundraising candy support the paper. Coach Langston is optimistic about next year's team because all the members of this year’s team will be able to come back as juniors and seniors. 1983 Golf Team Coach Mike Langston Juniors Joe Sabalaskey John Payne David Milholland Chris Gerrib Sophomores Kyle Huber Todd Burch John Hart Dan Michaels 74 Intramural Basketball John Hubbard and Mike Jeffers dribble down the floor. Varsity basketball is one of the major prides of Westville High. This year’s team continued the winning spirit. With a successful 16-10 record, the tigers pushed their way through a tough year. The high point of the season came with the winning of our third consecutive Vermilion County Tournament. After that the tigers continued their streak by winning the first two games of the Regional Tournament. Unfortunately Chrisman stopped the team before we could capture the title. This year's team was very successful in its efforts. With a dedicated coach and hard-working players next year’s team will hopefully be just as good. Varsity Basketball: L to R (front) mgr. G. Juris. Though the record was disappointing to the team and the fans, it was rebuilding year with a new coach and many positive aspects emerged. According to Coach Mayfield. The entire team was very dedicated and worked hard all year. I feel that the hard work will show up next year. The biggest problem facing us next year will be replacing the seniors who displayed outstanding leadership. The captains of this year’s team were Teresa Howard. Shelly Sanks and Lisa Hart. JR. VARSITY Determination, enthusiasm, and team work was the key to success for the J.V. lady tigers. IB-5 record. The J.V. lost to 2 non-conference and 3 conference teams, but came back and beat the conference teams the second time around. With the large number of freshman on the squad we were able to schedule two freshman games with Danville, which the Tigers won both 32-22 and 39-35.
