MISSING ffakt oUmttv This year the 1975-1976 Janus Staff would like to dedicate the yearbook to Mrs. Jackie Smith. Mrs. Smith is the Media Specialist and librarian at Westville High and has been working on the yearbook since 1968. This is Mrs. Smith's last year to work on the Janus and we wish to express our thanks to her throughout the years. 2 Janus Staff James Balsamello Thomas Buchanan As we celebrate America's 200th birthday, we look back to the many hardships our forefathers faced to establish freedom. Two hundred years later as some of our precious heritage sometimes seems to be slipping, may your educational gains help to preserve the American Heritage. 5 6 Mr. James Ratcliff Bradford Bates Drivers Education Ernie Cox Special Education Sandra Bennett Special Education Steven DeClerck U.S. History 7 Linda Jo Gaudio Business David Griesemer Music Gail Griffith English John Hardy Physical Education Anna Hill Business William Harmon Social Sciences Nancy Hammond English and Permanent Sub 8 Kent Hughes Guidance Judy Laker Physical Education 9 Janice Lewis English Marsha Ludlam An James Meharry Science Steven Odle Math Tim O’Neill Science 10 Susan O'Neal Home Economics Dorothy Ramert Spanish English 11 Fred Smith Industrial Education Larry Smith Social Sciences and English Paul Stxouse Industrial Arts, Permanent Sub Jacqueline Smith Media Specialist Dorothy Virostek Science Dennis Watson Physical Education Mary Ann Thomas Physical Education Thomas Watrobka Health 12 Linda Page Secretary Beverly Walblay Secretary Betty Jones Speech Therapist Pat Weber Nurse 13 Maxine Brooks Cook Celesta Maross Cook Lucette Liggett Yasuko Russian Wayne England Cook Cook Custodian Ed Gabehart Vendel Puskac Custodian Custodian 14 Ernest Spezia Custodian Pete Millholland Custodian John Balent Custodian Seniors Richard Wayne Balsamello Boss” Cynihia Sue Barnes ” Cindy” Toni Lynn Barnes ”Baby Doll” 17 Nora M. The Westville Tiger Football team compiled a season record of 2 wins and 6 losses. Although the Tigers were lacking in experience and size, they were definitely not lacking in spirit and enthusiasm. They played their hearts out until the final horn sounded. Their desire to win was one of the biggest attributes of the team. With the exception of a few fine senior ball players, this team will undoubtedly be a team to be reckoned with in the coming year. GtoSS-Go unfaij e m r, aew Manager Scott Alexander The second year of our cross-country program brought about many pleasing results. A big accomplishment was finishing the season with the same number of runners that started it. Cross-country is a grueling sport requiring not only physical qualities but exceptional mental attitudes as well. Every one of our runners deserves a lot of credit. Many outstanding performances were turned in this year. In the Bismarck Invitational, WHS finished 7th out of 18 teams. Our two best this year were Larry Mackowiak and B. J. Vilk. In the Wauseca Conference meet, Larry finished 13th while B. J. came in 15th. B. J. owns our school course record of 15:38 for 2.9 miles. Larry is close behind. Both were voted in the top 20 best in the area by area coaches; quite an honor. They also shared the most valuable award as voted on by the other members of the team. Besides Larry and B. J., other letter winners this season were Randy, Rick, Mike, Fred, Bob, and Rob. Rob turned in a fine 8th finish in the Frosh-Soph Conference meet. Scott and Dawn rounded out the squad. Next season, cross-country will be divided into two classes, with the top 5 teams in each district going to the state final. This year we finished 11th against many bigger schools. Next year, with 7 returning lettermen, 1 know we'll see you at the state championship! 78 LEFT TO RIGHT: M. Hall, D. Faith, N. Brazas, C. Youhas, M. Watts, L. Wilson, J. Alexander, J. Franklin, Coach Laker. The Tennis Team this year, coached by Mrs. Laker, finished with a 3-3 record. Team members were: Juniors; Jeanne Franklin, Christine Youhas, Danita Faith and Monica Hall, Sophomores: Jeana Alexander, Mary Watts, Nancy Brazas; and our only freshman, Lori Wilson. We competed in the district tournament at Danville, finishing 4th in team points. Christine Youhas, Jeanne Franklin and Mary Watts went into second round competition of the semi-finals. Mrs. Laker was proud of our playing ability. We were a young team, but we have hopes of a strong group next year. All team members will be returning in the fall. All of the girls will be returning next year, hoping to have a successful season. The teams scheduled were: Homer, ABL, Chrisman, Hoopeston, Watseka, and Bismarck. We participated in a tournament at Schlarman with Danville, Bismarck, and Schlarman, in which we received 2nd place. We also hosted the District Volleyball Tournament at Westville. Can two pickpockets, who believe in doing unto others when it comes to relieving them of their wallets, ever come to understand and appreciate the true meaning of Christmas? In Christmas Comes to Detroit Louis two derelicts do undergo a complete transformation, thanks to the help of a little blind girl. Of course she couldn’t do the job all by herself, she had the help of two capable angels. Our cast for the light-hearted comedy included the following: Detroit Louis - Ron James; Harry the Left - Mike Miller; Blind Girl - Laurie Collins; Mrs. Aiken (old lady) - Lisa Briggs; Old Man - Mike Minesinger; Angel 1 - Cathy Myers; Angel 2 - Deb Kotcher; John - Rick Balsamello; Cara - Theresa Huffman; Doctor - Ray Ligocki; Nurse - Kelly Hall; Salvation Army Worker - Tricia Johnson; Specialist - Steve Dyszkewicz; Woman - Beth Foyer and the play was directed by Mrs. Cheryl Lack. 90 Layne Estes Kathy Balchuk Jolene Wise Judy Balkus Glenda Jones Rita Sykes L. SMUt I 776 Every basketball season I feel that the program is developing to its potential. This season is no exception. The 1975-76 team reached every preseason goal, and then some, by competing in the sweet sixteen playoffs. I would personally like to congratulate this team on their great effort. We are losing a good group of seniors that were the key to our success, I wish each and everyone of them continued success in the future. They will always have good memories to look back on and truly be proud of their accomplishments. To the underclassmen that were also instrumental in playing their roles, I encourage them to look to the future and set their goals and if possible surpass the 1975-76 goals. This can only be done through hard work, dedication and love of the game of basketball. To the underclassmen you should remember, There are Talkers and there are doers, Let’s be doers. ’' Freshman Coach Paul Strouse Managers Kevin King, lohn Lemezis 94 FRONT ROW: B. Cassity. B. This years squad was led by senior Joe Cline, who was voted Most Valuable Wrestler and Co.-Captain. Other seniors who were responsible for the team’s success were Co.-Captain Cloyd Miller and Greg Koss. Although their records did not come out as we had anticipated, they were excellent teams in different respects. The team’s hardest worker, Randy Vantrepotte, broke the school record in the two mile with a time of 10:31.8 seconds. He should break this record again next year as well as set the mile standard. Our 440 relay team also established a new record time of 46.45 seconds. This same team barely missed going to the state meet by .11 seconds. The members of this team were Joe Hartman. Gary Quick, Eli Williams and Joe Cline. Next year you should be prepared for some changes to take place. We will surely miss Joe Cline who turned in an excellent time of 10.3 seconds in the 100 yard dash. Joe was also voted the track award as most valuable. We will have more experience behind an excellent group of freshmen and sophomores. All things taken into consideration, next season should be the best in Westville in the last 5 years. Let's hope so! In the fall, the Marching Tiger Band began to incorporate some drum and bugle corps techniques, resulting in a very impressive parade and show group. They were the most improved marching unit at the Vermilion County Marching Festival, and they intend to continue this trend. The Symphonic Band also was bigger and better this year. They received many good comments from the state contest judges, and were well received by their small, but loyal, concert audiences. This year's jazz program saw the development of our second performing jazz group, the Jazz Lab Band. Both bands worked very hard and became ensembles which consistently turned in fine performances. Jazz Band I participated in Jazz Festivals at Auguatana College and Eastern Illinois University. They also played a special concert at Judith Giacoma School.
