The Tigers started the season with a string of three victories. Included in these first victories was an impressive victory over St. Joe-Ogden 41-14. After having won three in a row, the string was snapped by Hoopeston 20-8. The team then went into a tailspin and lost three more games, which included a lopsided defeat to Watseka. The Tigers then went to Georgetown for their annual battle with the Buffaloes with great enthusiasm and a great backing by the student body, the football team turned in a great performance in defeating Georgetown 20 to 0 and bringing the coalbucket back to Westville. The last game of the season was rather an anticlimax after the Georgetown game. The game was important in the fact that the Tigers record of five wins and four defeats. This group of boys with intense desire and determination. This group of boys, made of mostly seniors, was the nucleus of our 18-11 season. The six seniors on our team will be greatly missed not only for their ability but for their great attitude towards basketball and representing Westerville in general. The group that is leaving our team consists of the following: Curt Palfi, Steve Barnes, Bob Fauver, Kevin Strako, Ray Wellman, and Jeff Shaw. They made up their lack of heighth and rebounding strength with this gutty desire and hustling at all ends of the court. As you all know We beat a very tough Ridgefarm team three times. We defeated our arch-rivals, Georgetown, twice which seemed to be the icing on the cake for Westville sports teams this year. After our resounding victory in the coal bucket game to go out again and beat Georgetown who wanted very much to upset us. Also we defeated a tough team from Schlarman. Our boys really wanted this victory as they were playing for pride. We beat Schlarman 67-61 as this was the first time we beat them in 17 years. We also did very well in the tournaments we competed in, as we brought home a second place trophy in all three of them. Looking back trying to visualize the season as a whole I consider this as my most successful season and one of the most satisfying as coach. As I look ahead to see what's in store for Westville and its basketball program, I find myself becoming very hopeful and optimistic. I feel we have the talent and dedication that is essential in a winning combination. 99 S. Bennett. T. Wilson, S. Alexander, B. Adams, R. Bryant, E. Barton, S. Finet, J. Slavik, J. Barney, L. In terms of a won-lost record this year, the wrestlers suffered a disappointing season. However, the wrestling team consisted of all freshmen and sophomores with the exception of our two standout juniors, Dave Minesinger and Terry Howard. David an all county selection, won the district and placed third in the sectional, with 17 pins for the season. Terry was a consistent winner in the 105 pound wt. class. The freshmen and sophomores who competed this season gained a tremendous amount of experience and are anxiously awaiting next season with hopes of improving this years record! The season was hampered by rainy cold weather, but many boys turned in some outstanding times. Mike DeBarba had one of the best 880 runs time in the area. Dan McCullough was again voted most valuable and finished a fine four year career for the Tigers. Next year the IHSA will have a two class state track championship series and with such boys as Eli Williams, Ed Barton, Ron Wilson, Joe Cline and B. J. Vilk coming up the Tigers should continue to be in for another fine season. 440 RELAY D. McCullough, E. Williams, K. Such, M. DeBarba 880 RELAY K. Such, J. Cline, E. Williams, B. Our program is showing great success again this season with a nucleus of six graduating seniors breaking the line up. The fine group of seniors are Jeff Shaw, Kevin Strako, Ray Wellman, Steve Barnes, Dave Haluska and Bill Bayliff. With a good nucleus of underclassmen we won the Wauseca Conference for the second season. I would like to thank the students, fans and ball players (especially the graduating seniors) in their efforts to make Westville a power in baseball in this area. 132 COACH HARDY MANAGER CHARLIE JOHNSON Wm 1973 QirJk Tennis Tecum KNEELING: Kim Russian, Kathy Wilson, Kaye Gerulski, Danita Faith. This year, the first Vermilion County Golf match was played in Danville at the Elk's Club. Jim Payne, Tom Day, and Curt Palfi being the top three medalists led the Tigers to a first place.
