THE 1961 JANUS Published by The Senior Class of Westville Township High School Westville, Illinois 1 Let The Memories Begin! anus am I; oldest of potentates; Forward I look, and backward, and below count, as god of avenues and gates, The years that through my portals come and go. I block the roads and drift the fields with snow, I chase the wild-fowl from the frozen fen; lv frosts congeal the rivers in their flow, My fires light up the hearths and hearts of men.” —Longfellov CONTENTS Calendar . . ..................... 3 Departments............I........... 27 Music........................ 37 Athletics ........ ............ 43 Administration ........ ........... 55 Students ......A................... 59 Ads ........... ... ............... 78 3 Seniors Rich Giacone— Darlene Piatt Juniors Esther Linn—Jerry Duensing Homecoming Attendants and Escorts 8 T h e I n n e r W 1 1 1 y The gym rang with chuckles and laughter as the Dramatic Club and Junior Class presented their annual play, the proceeds of which go to the Junior Class fund. This year's play, entitled “The Inner Willy,” told the story of Willoughby (Jim Troglia), a 16 year old boy, who lives with his three doting aunts (Betty Gill, Marie Schifo, and Rose Baranaus-kas), who continually pamper him. His situation becomes so bad that Inner Willy (Paul Jones), his conscience, has to help him stand up to his aunts and become more independent. Supporting cast inj eluded Herb Linn, Ray Carlson, Marcia Simmonds, Donna Cash, Esther Linn, and Elizabeth Watson. Direction was by Mrs. Swinford, assisted by Ronald Walker. Weeks of practice and coaching from the boss. The lucky winner is my date. . . . Oh, I think I’m going to be ill. At one of their regular meetings they removed the heart from a frog and managed to keep it pulsating for 45 minutes. One of the hoys dissected a baby pig. Miscroscopic plants and animals were studied, and various collections were put on display for the benefit of the students. The climax of the year was reached with the public exhibition of real-life displays and charts picturing the forms of life from the simplest to the most complex. Seated: Simmonds, Gash Standing: D. They performed in both pregame and halftime shows at the home football games. This year the band did not enter a contest as a group, but several solos and ensembles entered the district and state contests. The band participated in a concert at Jamaica and also gave a spring concert here. The orchestra, which performed at the plays, assembly programs, and the May Fete, is also responsible for providing music for graduation activities. The Music Department sponsors the Christmas Dance and the May Fete with the Physical Education Department. It also sponsors a Halloween Party and a band party at the end of the year for its members. Led by co-captains, Rich Giacone and Carl Smith, the Tigers ended the season with a mark of 7-0-1. The main highlight of the season was the 12-6 victory over Georgetown, Westville’s arch rival. The victory was the first in eleven years. Right tackle, Richard Giacone; fullback, Don Curry; right halfback, Carl Smith; right end, Mike Petrus; and guard, Jim Miglin were elected to Little All-State teams sponsored by different newspapers over the state. 31 Oakwood 6 6 Martinsville 6 24 Dugger 0 20 Turkey Run 13 13 Hoopeston 7 20 Milford 0 21 St. Elmo 13 12 Georgetown 6 Coaches Mattingly, Vilk. and Svyantek 45 •2 -i £ JUM+rjL ylllLE % 'X, (p t 0 P CLn 0 7( C TTGERg jj -0 ATHLETIC BOARD OF CONTROL Excitement mounts as the Tigers roll past Georgetown. The three games lost in the conference were by a total of only five points. It was a good season in terms of games won and lost, but the Tigers were unlucky in the tournaments and unable to earn a trophy. After defeating Jamaica in the county tourney opener, the team was stopped by the eager Hoopeston Corn-jerkers in the second game. In the heart-breaking first and last game of the regional tournament, Westville gracefully bowed to district champions, St. Joseph, thus ending the season. 50 Terry Bishop Center Bill Nicholas Guard Bob Davis Forward 51 Dick Jackson Guard Jerry Duensing Forward Reserve Team First Row: McMasters, manager, Chiaffredo, Moody, Kovack, Plumart, Hart, R.
