Published by the SENIOR CLASS of Westville Township High School WestviJle, Illinois 1954 A BOARD OF EDUCATION Sealed: John Bednar, Steve Tovey, and Joe Ottino. Standing: William Pierce, Gene Groppi, Alpha Libert, and Andrew Kaluza. Since the Board of Education carries on much of its work unnoticed by the student body, many students do not realize its importance. The board consists of seven of our leading citizens, who do their best in solving the many problems that arise in the management of any school. To these men who have helped raise the standards of our school, we wish to show our appreciation. 4 Although Principal Norman Patberg has been at Westville High School only three years, he has already won the admiration and respect of the faculty and student body. We believe that it is through his sincere interest in the welfare of our school that we have become a school of higher standards, one we shall long remember. We, the class of 1954, would like to show our deepest appreciation to Mr. Patberg, who has so successfully guided us through our last three years at Westville High School. Norman B. MEMBERS OF THE CAST: Lee Povilaitis Sharon Revello Phyllis Watson Sharon Bednar Eleanor Lynch Anita Madden Carl Ballard John Kaluza Paul Stines Janet Funk Stage Managers: Marilyn McArdle Ray Urban 52 THE SENIOR CLASS PLAY A group of nine seniors, under the direction of Mr. Allison, faced the spotlights in early spring. Their presentation of “Wish On the Moon” proved to be very successful. Gaiety and warmheartedness held the interest of the audience from the opening scene to the closing curtain. Members of the cast include: John Waitkus Donna Watson Carole Attutis Darla Sedlak bob Krakoski Marilyn Kovanic Dorinda Stanis Elinor Galan Mike Grites ,953 B«. .MOM® 54 THE VARSITY CLUB -J s • mil : Mr. Sweet . ..... . ;.. . . : Mr. Bill Holinitis, Joe Krakoski Tom Hathaway, Bob Fitzsimmons John Milholland, Don Cooke Frank Gerulis, Mike Grites Carl Ghibaudy, Bill Page Bob Krakoski, Joe Miller John Kaluza, Bill Yow Joe Irwin, Noel Woods Jim Hathaway, Jim Nigra Ralph Elliot, Ray Urban Bill Oswalt, Eddie Klaman, Ted Vacketta David Hutt 55 Fir.il Row: Floyd Gallatin, Honnic Orlea, Jerry Vacketta, Louie Wise, John Wolfe, John Payne, Paul Stines, Tony Wise, Carl Shaw, Kon Lomax, Bob Lape, Duane Lutchka, Jim Pettigrew. Coaches Barney Vilk and John Richardson reintroduced the single wing formation to Westville football this year. The team record (3-4-1) does not indicate the true success of the season for, aside from the fact that both coaches were new to Westville, the players had to make the transition from the “T” to the single wing formation. However, the coaches were satisfied with the general outcome of the season. The team was hampered by injuries to key players throughout the year; some games were even played without the services of several regulars. At the end of the season seven of the players were honored by being awarded a berth on the all-county squad. All players did an outstanding job throughout the season, whether they received recognition or not. 1953 FOOTBALL SCORES Westville 7 Catlin 0 Westville 6 Clinton 21 Westville 0 Farmer City 0 Westville 13 Oakwood 20 Westville 6 Ross vi lie 0 Westville 0 Unity 6 Westville 40 Jasonville 0 Westville 0 Georgetown 12 59 MANAGERS Blaine Xightlinger John Kaluza Bonnie DeBarbara CHEERLEADERS Carole Attutis, Delores Pintar, Darla Sedlak 63 BASKET BALL Bob Krakoski John Milholland Joe Krakoski Bill Rolinitis Jim Hathaway Don Cooke Ron Duensing Jerome Razmus the varsity • ‘ 0,n Hathaway, 1953-54 SCHEDULE We They Indianola 39 Georgetown 43 Oakwood .... 50 Covington 55 Ridgefarm 53 Williamsport ...49 38 Pontiac Holiday Tourney Hillsboro 62 Lockport 42 Georgetown ...59 50 Armstrong 24 Catlin 57 Rankin 35 Vermilion County Tourney Georgetown ...57 45 Oakwood ...67 53 East Lynn ...78 64 1 loopestsn . .. 58 75 We They Sidell 85 54 Potomac 76 71 DuSable 94 Hoopeston 50 48 Rossville 66 57 Urbana 64 69 Oakwood 66 63 Paris 66 68 East Lynn 67 69 Villa Grove 72 60 Regional Tourney Sidell 47 Schlarman 73 53 Danville 53 63 65 THE «StRVES KupciV Mwlicv Enirte FranVino, J « Bob L Pe’ ,«: LcHoy Status Secon 1 bA RoUnitis. ,er C n S 6 Ivrow O B,'ey Cfup- ..„, Ro i« v-r,,( Set'PinaS’ , n„n nuensmg. =raW Connie RaMW ,. Photographer at work. TIME OUT FOR LAUGHS LAST RESORT Traffic Cop: “Use your noodle, lady! Use your noodle!” Lady Motorist: “My goodness! Where is it? I’ve pushed and pulled everything in the car.” CONFUSED A newcomer in a war plant stopped to chat with one of the workers. “Look at that youngster over there,” he said, “the one with the overalls, cropped hair, and nails in her mouth. It’s hard to tell whether it’s a boy or a girl.” “That’s a girl, all right,” said the war worker. “She’s my daughter.” The newcomer apologized. “Please forgive me,” he said. “I didn’t know you were her father.” “Father, nothing,” said the worker, indignantly, “I’m her mother!” WHICH ARE YOU? If a fellow tries to kiss a woman and gets away with it, he’s a man; if he tries and doesn’t get away with it, he’s a brute; if he doesn’t try but would get away with it if he tried, he’s a coward; but if he doesn’t try and wouldn’t have gotten away with it if he tried, he’s wise. NOW SHE KNOWS Teacher: “I would like to know why it is that whenever I leave the room for a short time and then return I find no one working.” Jimmie: “It’s because you wear rubber heels, ma’am.” PROFESSIONAL COURTESY Professor Marks: “Now, Mr. Snaffle, I want you to explain this examination paper. Why do you have all your answers in quotation marks?” Freshman Snaffle: “Just a bit of courtesy to the man seated at my left. Prof.” WHAT CAD WROTE THIS? I think that I shall never see A girl refuse a meal that’s free; A girl with hungry eyes not fixed Upon a drink that’s being mixed; A girl who doesn’t like to wear A lot of junk to match her hair. Cirls are loved by mugs like me ’Cause we don’t like to hug a tree. BACK AGAIN Boss: “Well, did you read the letter I sent you?” Office Boy: “Yes, sir, I read it inside and outside. On the inside it said, ‘You are fired,” and on the outside it said. ‘Return in five days,’ so here I am.” TRY IT ON THE HORSE A farm hand took his girl for a buggy ride and nine miles out in the country the horse dropped dead. “Oh, dear,” sighed the girl, “and I’m so tired.” “Suppose I give you a nice kiss,” said the farm hand. “That will put life in you.” “In that case,” said the girl, “you’d better kiss the horse.” HORTICULTURAL Mrs. Newrich was fond of flowers and especially liked the salvia, but she was not very reliable in getting the names right. She was giving directions to her gardener: “On this side of the walk,” she said, “I want you to put out some salivas. Now what would you suggest for the other?” “Well, madam,” answered the gardener solemnly, “maybe it would be a good idea to put some spittoonias there.” COINCIDENCE? The list of prize winners at a recent picnic was announced as follows: “Mrs. Smith won the ladies’ rolling pin throwing contest by hurling a pin 75 feet.” “Mr. Smith won the 100-yard dash.” “CATS” The following essay on “Cats” was turned in by a ten-year-old pupil: “Cats and people are funny animals. Cats have four paws but only one ma. People have forefathers and only one mother. “When a cat smells a rat he gets excited. So do people. “Cats carry tails and a lot of people carry tales, also. “All cats have fur coats. Some people have fur coats and the ones who don’t have fur coats say catty things about the ones who do have them.” MAN THE PUMPS! Father: “What are your school marks this month. Son?” Son: “Under water. Dad.” Father: “What do you mean?” Son: “Below ‘C’ level.” ADVERTISEMENTS We, the Class of 1954, wish to reserve this space to thank all the advertisers who have made this Janus possible. 83 Compliments of ALBERT D. Some say Eve 8 and Adam 2—a total of 10 only. Now, we figure the thing out differently. Eve 8 and Adam 8 also—total 16. On second thought, we think the above figures are entirely wrong. If Eve 8 and Adam 82, certainly the total would be 90. Scientific men, however, on the strength of the theory that the antediluvians were a race of giants, reason something like this. Eve 81 and Adam 82— total 163. Wrong again. What could be clearer than if Eve 81 and Adam 812 the total was 893? We believe the following to be the true solution: Eve 814 Adam and Adam 8124 Eve—total 8,938. If Eve 814 Adam, Adam 81,242 oblige Eve-total 82,056 apples. 97 Noble Seniors - Your signature, please.
