The aim of the STUDENT ECHO has been to keep the students and patrons informed regarding the activities of the school. We have tried to make it interesting and to keep in touch with up-to-date news. Sometimes the edi- tor and her assistant felt discouraged because the news was late, incorrectly typed, words misspelled and not very original but most of the time we have fine cooperation from the staff which has led to the production of nine good papers. 34 LIBRARIANS PROMOTE GOOD READING HABITS John Grossman, Linda McKibben, Cheryl Nettrouer, Crete Jensen, EUowene Waldron, Cathy Fought, Karen Car- penter, Darlene Demske, Elaine Dallas, Mr. Vance. In addition, choir recorded a tape to have pressed for a record. The music on the record included selections from the various types of music which were sung throughout the year. This group and the madrigal singers narrowly missed I ' s at contest; choir by two points, madrigals by one point. Several excellent soloists had prominent parts in choir numbers this year--Connie Grouse, Marsha Thompson, John Fought and Harold Gingerich. The orchestra participated in a Ghristmas concert with the choir, performing selections from Handel ' s Water Music and familiar Ghristmas carols, along with several other numbers. The twirlers ' ages range from four to thirteen years. As a group they take a lesson once a week in the high school gym. Baton twirling has brought much pleasure to them and it is hoped that the basketball fans have found the twirling exhibitions to be a welcome addition to ball game viewing. 42 ATHLETICS NEWEST SPORT-GOLF Gold was added to the interscholastic sports program this year as a minor sport. It was hoped that this activity would give more boys an opportunity to compete. This is essential in the production of the well rounded individual. The team was made up of the five boys pictured at the left, with Dave Fought and Larry Schlabach acting as substitutes. All of the participants showed much promise in this new sport. Mr. Haughey, Gene Schlabach, Rich Lambright, Mike Yoder, Jerry Showalter, Dennis Yoder. CROSS COUNTRY The Bears of Topeka participated in an extended Cross Country program in 1964. The boys saw action in nine meets, and the sectional meet at Elkart. Their performance against the competition was quite respectful since most schools were much larger. In the sectional they placed seventh out of fifteen larger schools. Glen Eash and Bob Yoder placed first and second in eight meets. Both boys brought spirit and leadership to the team. An important place in the school is filled by the cheerleaders. Unless they create pep and interest, even the team suffers. Cer- tainly this year with the use of skits, longer pep sessions, and the help that Mrs. Johns gave the girls, they did not lack for novel ideas to create interest and pep. Perhaps the team will have to give the cheerleaders and Mrs. Johns some credit for the good standing they achieved this year. 51 TRACK TEAM BREAK8 RECORDS I ROW 1--Keith Bobeck, Mike Yoder, Bob Yoder, John Christner. We, along with the other members of the staff and our sponsor, will long remember the hours of work and planning we experienced. After one has worked on something for a complete school year, constantly striving to do things in a new and better way, he feels that he has given a part of himself, and the book becomes much more than just words and pictures. It is our sincere hope that this yearbook represents the highpoints of the 1964-1965 school year. Sincerely, Marsha Thompson, Editor Connie Crouse, Assistant Editor BOOSTERS J. F.
