Her seemingly endless flow of energy has heightened our enthusiasm for all our traditional Senior activities, such as the Christmas caroling, the Senior Play, and, of course, the many parties. But perhaps the impromptu events that the Browns dreamt up were the most fun of allg the making of snow ice cream, or that mem- orable Chester Creek canoe trip. These capable students have skillfully governed the eighty-one members of '58, It is no easy job to organize class parties, to bring order to the hubbub of a meeting, to meet deadlines in class business, and to constantly think of new and constructive ideas, yet '58 has had nothing to worry about. The fact is unanimously acknowledged that these two have done their work to perfection. Susie Borton, secretary, and Henry Chen, treasurer, have been re- sponsible for many of the important but unglamorous, thankless, business matters, such as taking notes, collecting dues, and bookkeeping. A special round of applause should be sent their way for keeping the class running so smoothly! Corky Scheffey entered Westtown in her sophomore year and was im- mediately chosen to represent her class on Steering Committee. However, her true leadership ability came forth in the following year when she was elected Chief Proctor of third floor and became so well known a.nd liked that the honor of SBP was bestowed upon her at the end of that year. She has also been on the lacrosse team for the past three years, was a member of chorus, and won fame and renown in Westtown circles for her portrayal of Eloise in the council skit. Corky Kelly began his Westtown career in first grade and since then has had a finger in just about every Westtown pie. He has been a permanent council member, the president of his class, a member of the soccer, basketball, and track teams, and has held a lead in two operettas and a Shakespeare play. This fiery red-head livened many occasions with his Irish jokes and quick wit. Their position is an important one, for they have not only been concern- ed with the general well-being of the student body and smooth running of the school, but have also headed their respective councils and Social Com- mittee. One of their great accomplishments this year was the complete organization and operation of Friends Schools Day when the faculty aban- doned the school and the students took over. Second Row: Terry Irwin, Cap Loveland, Pete Fuhrer, Tom Mahood, Sam Allen. Boys' Council, under the leadership of Colin Kelly, with the able assis- tance of Sam Allen, was very active this year. Besides the usual duties of placing the new students and carrying out disciplinary action, they in- stituted several changes in the staid rules of Westtown. They increased the number of West Chester meal pers to two, changed Saturday breakfast to eight o'clock, and clarified several other rules. They helped set up a separate Stone House Council with Colin and Sam as advisors. This council not only handles discipline problems for Stone House, but also plans lec- tures and other forms of entertainment for the boys. In cooperation with Girls' Council, Boys' Council put on the Christmas Dance, which was termed by many as the best dance in many years from both the dater and non-dater point of view. Council has tried to do without Breakfast Club as a punishment for latenesses, and has been reasonably successful. The sleepover system was changedto fiveamonth adding one sleepover. These words became the familiar opening of the meeting of the girls who gathered every Monday night in the Nook as the student governing organization of Girls' End. From the very beginning of the year, when the council members arrived early to extend a grand welcome to the new students, their concerns centered around one basic idea: that the best opportunities be offered for each individual to develop her understanding of other people and her ability to assume per- sonal responsibilityg and that these opportunities be used to the utmost advantage. A recognition of the importance of the general student awareness oi the problems which Council had to deal with led to giving an open Council meeting at the beginning of the year, encouraging visitors at weekly meet- ings, and keeping the student body posted on Council's activities. This year Council was anxious to try new ideas which might contribute to the smooth running of the dorm. More effective systems for detention, proctoring, and managing the Kitchenette were installed. In addition to carrying out these improvements, Girls' Council gave akitchenette shower, and worked with the Boys' Council to plan and sponsor the Christmas Dance, which turned out to be a festive occasion for all. and The Work Program meeting was called to order every Tuesday by Bobbi Kaesemeyer and Bill Fritze, the heads, who were ably assisted by Master Russ, Teacher Margaret, and Teacher Harriet. Susie Bortou and John Horton, the senior members and active assistants, both survived being work bank head during the flue epidemic. The underclass members voiced the students' suggestions, ranging from not having enough time to do a work job, to wanting the alarm clock to awaken students earlier. One of the more important items which was discussed this year concern- ed the appearance of table cloths in the dining room. It was thought that mats on hard top tables would improve the over-all effect. The committee discussed the practical aspects which would involve the set-up and clear crews. The Work Program depends solely on student cooperation and this year can be added to the other successful years because the students felt that responsibility. The money goes to a good cause, as the funds raised by pledges, auctions, food sales, and the French Fair are used each year for special projects. This year the three main concerns of the committee were: arranging for two West- town students to go to school in Germany next year, helping the orphanage in Lebanon, and sending a sum of money to the Philadelphia Weekend Work- camps. Aw ,T 'W ' All right, break it up P' This is the familiar cry of a member of West- town's private spy organization as he attacks aparty of poor, unsuspecting daters after a social activity. Despite the unpopularity of this position, the members of the '58 Social Committee dispatched their duties faithfully and with a minimum of ocular precipitation on the part of victims. For those not familiar with the obligations of this committee, here are two of the more outstanding contributions to the year: drawing up a stand- ardized list of Social Regulations and a warning system, and awarding penalties for wayward social behavior. The Steering Committee, led by Kathy Horst and Dave Emmons, found it- elf faced with a new job, as the schedule change altered social periods 'om forty-five minutes on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday to n hour and a half on Wednesday and Friday. This enables the committee i concentrate their ideas and efforts to fewer,but longer, activities which Eried from dancing to hikes. They planned the Talent Show, and unusual d original activities for Westtown's 1957-1958 social agenda. 'Q im In 0 J Aazg as 11 The Religious Life Committee is composed ofapermanent member from each class, rotating members, a boys' head and a girls' head. It is divided into three subcommittees which take charge of special aspects of the whole job. The Vespers committee, as the name suggests, plans Vespers for Sun- day nights. This involves inviting speakers or working out.programs to be done by students. A second subcommittee takes charge of sending students to outside meetings. This is a fairly routine job. All special projects such as discussion groups -and outside speakers are planned by a third subcommittee. Anything suggested in this committee is brought to a meeting of the whole committee for approval. Although the committee is subdivided, it works as a whole to make the religious life of the school as meaningful as possible for each individual student. That is where the birds are. Many members have returned with stories about the purple gallinule, the Everglade kite, and the roseate spoonbill. Pete Bernstein, Wilson Baker, Otto Hasse, or John Alcock could tell you about the Florida birds. This year's bird club has perked up and become a very active club. The greatest step seems to be that a survey has been started. The interested members choose a territory and study the birds and their habits in that Section. The data is then recorded so that future research can be done. They have learned a great deal through excursions and through the films that were recently donated. A. with facts about sports events of the past at Westtown. Such recollections greatly increased the interest of the meetings, held informally in the Dean's office for the dis- cussion, planning, and decisions concerning the Boys' athletic events and the distribution of their awards. Also to be considered were the paying of the bills accumulated by boys' sports, and the organizing of the Brown and White games and of the intramural softball league. Checkout cuts were introduced, a stricter system of detention established, and the ancient constitution at last revised. Many distinguished members comprised the A.A. roll call. Nancy Rod- man, the active treasurer, nearly lost her mind trying to keep track of the candy store cents. Because of her unflagging drive this has beena lucrative year. There was discussed more business than the secretary Gee Klemp- erer could recordg the notes of one meeting filled six pages. Margie Flac- cus, the vice president, had her finger in every A.A. undertakingg she was the dependable organizer. The two intramural captains and six managers kept spirit nmning high in all the A. A. projects. Together A. A. was a vivacious, hard-working bunch who have tried to make the A.A. an efficient organization. To get the Amicus out by Alumni Day has been the motto of -our edi- tor, Jenny Heyn, since June of 1957. Although Jenny is completely new at the yearbook business, with the aid of our faculty advisor, Master Gene Hogenauer, Damiy Rie, our business manager, and the rest of the staff, she has done a fine job. Quite a few things were added this yearg the major ones being a section of Senior Class History, a page dedicated to the new Activity Program, and more pictures of the various activities at Westtown. The cooperation of the Senior class withwriting articles and typing them, lightened the load for the staff. Although nothingwas ever new enough to be news, the engraver seemed to have spasms of unconventionality, and Master Ha.nk's car developed severe tuberculosis after many trips to the printer in West Chester, the Brown and White still came out approximately every two and one half weeks. The semi-chaotic atmosphere of the meetings made the Bee and Dub something besides efficient - it was fun! . I P0 The P.P.O. is Westtown's literary magazine. Its aim is to encourage creative writing at Westtown and to publish what are felt to be the best examples of student writing here. Being a relatively young publication, the P.P.O. is still growing and experimenting fBy theway, the na.me P.P.O. comes from a favorite phrase of Master Carroll Brown's: Profound Philosophical Observationsb. We, the staff, feel that the P.P.O. can be a valuable part of Westtown and we have tried to shape it in that direction. The two main obstacles have been student indifference and lack of money. There is no point in putting out a P.P.O. unless the students want it and will contribute to it. One of the jobs of the staff has been to try to show them that they do want it. Also, Quakers not being known as the kind of people that part with money easily, it has sometimes been difficult to convince the powers that be that a publication costs money, and that the better you try to make it, the more it will cost. To help solve this problem, the P.P.O.' included some advertisements this year. The staff, on the whole, has enjoyed the experience of putting out this year's P.P.O., shaping the standards as wewent along. We hope the rest of the school will also consider it to have been worthwhile. After Master Mervin threatened to make them singuntilithurt, the group sat up and really sang! With the assistance of President George Carroll and Secretary Bonnie Webster, Master Mervin Hutton has, for a second year, directed a large Vesper Choir. Composed of those students who enjoy singing music of a religious nature, the Cl1oir's appearances have been much appreciated by the school. Not up! are certainly familiar words to all the members g of the Mixed Chorus. It seems that there is a special way to breathe when one 52 ' sings, and under Master Mervin's expert direction,the Chorus attempted to F' learn the art of singing and all the little extras that go with it. f-as At the beginning of each year, the fifty-or-so chorus members are ' chosen from the many who try out. The Chorus met twice a week and work- Av ed very hard preparing the three programs that it gives each yearg the is 0 Christmas Program, the Operetta, and the Spring Musicale. This year the 5' , Chorus put on two short operettas, Gilbert and Sullivan's Trial by Jury, 0 . and Kurt Weill's Down in the Valley. Other than the operettas, the 0' chorus felt that perhaps the most rewarding task was that of Vivaldi's Q Gloria which was presented at Christmas. Singing this under Master 5- Mervin's expressive and inspiring leadership was truly a memorable 'lv experience. f J cdicsfnzl If you were to stroll by Industrial on a rehearsal night you would hear a variety of noises. For a while lovely strains would float out into the night, then suddenly all harmony would cease and after the resulting chaos, a baton would crash, some typical comment would be uttered by the able director, and then the group of musicians would buckle down again to re- peat that difficult measure. And so goes a rehearsal of the orchestra. This year a good group of students has been in the orchestra. The sec- tions were well balanced, and the players showed a good bit of technique and skill. In 1955 four new men joined the group. Bob Maurer stepped in on piano, Dave Laurens on cornet, Earl Dresden on drums, and Dave Emmons on bass. Ken Pennell was then in charge of the group and played tenor sax: Ken graduated at the end of that year leaving the new four on their own. Bob Maurer took over the arranging and Dave Laurens got himself a trumpet. This year Dave Edgerton and his trombone were a great contribution on those sl-i-i-ides. A lot of hard work and discouraging rehearsals have gone into The Plaids' successful performances at the major dances. Special thanks go to Jenny Heyn and Mike St. John for their work on piano and flute, and Clem Valentine, Beth Lane, and Claire Plowman for their vocal assistance. This public performance enabled others to enjoy some of the fine hillbilly music produced by the Rhythm Wranglers here at Westtown, This group originated last year and added quite a few members to its ranks. In addition to hillbilly music, they play rock 'n roll and at least fifteen square dance numbers. The Rhythmwrauglers' theme has become a favorite with the student body and was heard at the Talent Show, and the Christmas and Valentine Dances. What in tbe - Censored - are we waiting fof' Although not quite as famous as the currently popular Four Freshmen , e eight Seniors commonly known as the Senior Octet have achieved ome acclamation for their singing ability in Westtown circles. Their main jective, to sing songs that they enjoy singing and that people will like to ear, has been sought by them with the aid of arrangements by Bob Maurer d accompaniment of Jenny Heyn. The traditional Senior Octet has always sung close harmony songs, but 's year they decided that they would like to do songs which were more opularg also, some in which the audience could participate. This worked t quite well. The present Octet began practicing together towards the end of last year ith their aim focused on having an outstanding group this year. With the aid of their dependable poisonous snake, Adolph, they were able to get rid of the troublesome uncle, Master Dan, and nephew, Master Hank, who were causing all the trouble tothe Duootel family. In the evening, Westtown's throngs of visitors enter the Greenwood andthere, in the beautiful nature of simplicity, enjoy an excellent production. As You Like It was the last Shakespearean play in which the class of 1958 participated. On a lovely spring evening in May 1957 the case gave a delightful performance of the well-known comedy. Master Brian Sara became rapidly acquainted with this Westtown tradition as he coached the Shakespearean minded underclassmen for the first time. We will long remember the excellent acting of the leads: Marjorie Hibbard as Rosalind, Phoebe Balsley as Celia, and Colin Kelly playing the part of Orlando. Tom Stratton is the Senior Head with Juniors Dave Bates, Chanlee White, and Ben James as his more than able assistants. The Crew is a self perpetrating group which selects one or two candidates to fill the vacant places of graduating Seniors. Bill Hole, Dave Biddle, and Charles Harvey are the candidates this year. Stage Crew is the type of organization that one very rarely hears about, as the things they do are, for the most part, taken for granted. Projects vary from big productions such as the Shakespeare Play to carrying a record player to the Cabin for a Wednesday night dance. Although Captain Sam Allen was out for the latter part of the season with a leg injury, his position was ably filled by junior Sam Shanaman. ln the annual showdown between Westtown and George School, our team got out in front and stayed there in spite of a last-minute scoring effort by George School. Memories will be held of Miss Applebee,who contributed to the coaching of the '57 hockey season. The forward line displayed good coordination and cooperation. The backfield has a lot of fight and could really be counted on in all games. The season was climaxed with games against the faculty and the boys' soccer team. The Brown and White Varsity, paced by Captain Sam Allen, displayed good teamwork in beating such teams as Moorestown Friends, Girard College, and Tower Hill School. They were barelynosed out ina couple of close ones, especial- ly the game lost in overtime to St. Andrews after having come from behind to tie the score. The J.V. team had a very good season, winning most of their games by decisive margins. Margie Flaccus and Emmy Kennedy were the captains of the squad not only in name, but also in function. Although Emmy met with a foot injury in the middle of the season, the two girls were able to hold the squad to- gether to play some good ball throughout the year. The Varsity team started out with four wins. The most spectacular was against Moorestown when Westtown, with a one point lead at the half, ended the game with a nineteen point victory. The Cheney game, which Westtown dropped by five points, was an example of the squad at its worst. A big disappointment for the squad was the cancellation of the George School game. The Tower Hill gaane was also cancelled, so that the season was not as full as had been expected. However, the seniors who are leaving the squad, most of them having played together for three years, feel that the '58 season was a success. Hasse This year the boys had a good team, even though their records seem to e contradictory. They lost four tough meets andwon two. Master Fred put em through their forty laps a day causing them to stagger into dinner Qoften late D. John Benson,the captain, swam the 100 yard freestyle, usually bringing back a first. Tommy Thompson, an outstanding swimmer, scored three new records out of the four broken. Tommy broke the 200 yard free- style, the 150 individual medley, and the 100 yard butterfly. The other rec- ord, which was the 200 yard medley relay, was broken by John Benson, Pete Bernstein, Jon Taylor, and Tom Kaesemeyer at the Girard meet, after having tried manytimes through the year tobreak it, and always being a few tenths of a second off. The two divers were Otto Hasse and Jim Cree. Jim Cree, besides being a diver, did anexcellent job as manager. Three swim- mers achieved their first rank this year - Pete Bernstein,Otto Hasse, and Tommy Thompson. Because George School hadaplague of German measles, we were unable to compete against them. Every afternoon, a procession of girls coming out of the swimming pool with wet, straggly hair was the sign of another swimming practice. Much of this year's team was composed of under- classmen, therefore, the team has great possibilities for next year. The meets against George School and the Academy of the Sisters of Mercy were cancelled, the former being quarantined for the measles, but the White Ducks swarn against their opponents with smiling faces. They won the meet against Germantown Friends and made the other schools really fight for their swimming points. So devoted were these gals, that they got up at 6:00 A.M. one brisk October day to practice down on the Granolithic for a Pep Rally that evening. The Pep Rallies were original and full of team-boosting alacrity.
