Many people forget their high school and yet Westtown graduates do not forget Westtown. Chr school is a mixture of tradition and changes. For the past few years we have had a part in the forming of Westtown's character and this year as the Senior Class, we have been brought very close to the inner work- ings of the school. School work and meetings seem evenly divided. Council, the Steering Committee. Religious Life Committee, Work Program Committee, Service Committee. the Athletic Associations. the Amicus and class meetings have taken a large chunk of our time. What we have put into Westtown, however, represents only a small amount of the returns. In order that we might remember more of this, Westtown - we present our yearbook. the Amicus of 1956. slam? Nh QQ I f Q I N ' can Master Dan. now in his seventh year as headmaster. has always taken a thoughtful interest in our activities here a d has helped to guide us in many decisions which we as a class have had to face. Teacher Rachel. with her advice freely given and her love of the Scots. has been a colorful part of the school. In the capac- ity of assistant principal, shexhas written ma y reccomendations for us a d has concerned herself with our scholastic records. The dea s have perhaps been especially importa t to us. Teach- er Anne has managed her job as Dean of Girls with a sense of hu- mor that has been refreshing. Master Charlie has often laughed with us, sometimes disciplined us, but has always been fair. we will long remember the Big Four as a part of Westtown life that has been very importa t to us. . is 5511. X . gdqp.. If Westtown's student committee were run on the senior- ity system Sue Horsfield would hold the franchise. Sue ar- rived at Westtown in 1948. She has played varsity hockey, basketball and tennis for three years, being a truly per- manent member of Girls' Council Cthree yearsl, photograph- er for the Pmicus and the Brown and White and was a storm- ing young miss in the Senior Play. John Nicholson brought his humor and desire to try something new and different to Westtown in 1953. He kept it somewhat hidden from the public for the two years, but its came to light during his senior year. Together John and Sue sent the Faculty off for a Friends' School Day at Wilmington while they carried a great part of the load of running the school for the day. Almost every student had a job to do. We were dieticians, teachers, proctors or deans and were so well organized that when the day came, Sue and John sat back and watched their machine operate. Student responsibility had taken a great step forward through John and Sue's perseverance. When seniors needed more study time, all night ligbts were instituted so that the students now turn off their own lights at the appointed hour. The Social Cbmmittee had taken the job of keeping so- cial behavior up to par which used to be a Faculty head- ache, a large job that must be well done. This increased interest and the leadership of Sue Horsfield and Teacher Anne made Council a smoothly efficient unit. The Council Handbook was a great help to students, old and new, in answering many questions about school life, The best Christmas Dance ever was put on by the joint effort of the Boys' and Girls' Councils. The kitchenette was retouched by presents given at a Cbuncil--Kitchenette Party. This enterprising Cbuncil hopes to start selling small Westtown stickers and book covers. we all hope the wonderful spirit can be carried over for next year's Council, so they may have as successful a year as this year has been. Detention and Breakfast Club are not the rule but they are found necessary at various times. We, the Conmittee, work on the assumption that everybody can work and that everybody is looking for the opportun- ity to show his or her working capacities.l But rather, the aim is to develop a feeling of cooperation, a sense of fair play, and a memory within the individual. By ro- tating the jobs every three weeks, a student can acquire quite a variety, anything from toast warm up to class room clean up, from grapefruit cut up to early morning wake up, and finally from outside pick up to dining room check up. Unfortunately there are not enough jobs to go around, so a work bank is set up for the privileged few who do not rate a job for that shift. However, these few are constantly on guard lest they be called upon to substi- tute for others who take weekends, meal-pers, or ills. Under the guidance of Master Buss, Teacher Mary Webb and Teacher Keay, the Cbmmittee does its best to keep the above mentioned in order. ' 6 'Zee The Service Cmnnittee under the leadership of Jean Yaukey and Alan Willcox tried this year to make its activities a channel through which students could put their desires to be of service to others into action. Money was raised in many ways as it has been in other years. In addition, a Saturday evening at a Cafe a Paris was put on with the French and Art Departments, and was a great success! The mon- ey was used for four projects: to help cure disease and lessen the famine in Paraguay via the Bruderhof, of which John Arnold is a member, to support Philadelphia Weekend Workcampsg to help those still in need in Japan via the Swans who are traveling thereg and the largest sum, to bring Ecki Barth, a member of last summer's German Wbrkcamp, and a student at the Wilhemshule, our affiliated school, to Wbsttown for a year. Girls' AA was faced this year with many of the old problems of checkout and intra ural teams, but under the able leadership of Ingie Reiniger, President, and Mary Baker, Vice President, each problem was carefully worked out. Debby Borton has ably carried out her duties as secretary, taking minutes and planning commit- tees and Betty Butcher faithfully behind the counter at candy store, has done her part as treasurer. The AA has come up with some new ideas this year. With the Boys' AA and several other Friends' schools, Westtown held the first co-ed Friends Basketball Jamboree. Each board member was given individual responsibility to see that the day ran smoothly. The jamboree was a grand success and enjoyed by all. Having co-editors is something that was done for the first time this year. Not only have the editors and the rest of the staff sweated over this book but also Master Gene Hogenauer, our facutly advisor, to whom we're grateful for his time and advice. One of the first major problems we ran into in the fall was that of the budget. We were afraid we might have to have more than one Senior Picture per page. However, we found a new publisher who was able to give us the type of yearbook we wanted within our price range. We have had other problems about characteristics, slurp pictures and end sheets but eventually everything that was needed was handed in,,decisions were arrived at, and we were finally able to put everything together to form this Amicus. In the 2-10 PM Sunday after- noons most of the writing, typing, headlining and make-up were finished with the help of all the staff plus Master Marvin, the advisor. Shouts and questions such as 'fWho's got my article? or How many spaces does this headline have? reverberated al- most deafeningly through the Senior Parlor. Yet the paper emerged at times provocative, at times amusing, and often interesting. The emphasis of the paper was on good opinionated articles which would be of interest to the students as well as their parents. In this the staff was fortunate to have excellent writers among the student body to help maintain the standard set by last year's staff. Next year's Brown and Whites should also make good reading as the Sophomores and Juniors show great promise in radicalism and ingenuity. Ozadedta What is that sound from Industrial every Tuesday and Friday evening? Surely it can't be the Westtown Orchestra, but it so happens that this is the origin of the sound. lhder the apt and careful direction of Teacher Barbara Canfield the orchestra this year has proved itself more than a small group of diddlers diddl- ing on a few instruments. With the addition of several new mem- bers, the orchestra has expanded in size to include a bass viol, more violins,and cellos, a French horn, a string of flutes, bells and other percussion instruments. A Wednesday assembly was the first occasion in which the or- chestra performed. Then came its part in the Christmas Vesper Service in which all delighted in playing Christmas Bhapsody'fa conglomeration of all types of Christmas music. As something new during the Unusual Weekend the orchestra took part in a pro- gram for childred from a neighboring orphanage. This was a big success. A few of the orchestra members were privileged to play with some faculty in a small ensemble for the operetta. This was the first time that an operetta has been accompanied throughout its performance by more than a piano. Bob Mauer, Ken Pennell, Dave Emmons, Earl Dresden, Dave Laurell!- Ziamlled ww Continuing as the Westtown jazz combo for the second year, the Uncalled Fbur started this year as a nearly revolutionary group. The new boys in this five man quar- tette were Bob Mauer, pianog Dave Emmons, base, Dave Laurens, trumpet, and Earl Dresden,on drums. Ken Pennell on tenor sax was the only alumnus of last year's aggrega- tion. This year the Four performed on numerous occasions at the major dances and at the talent show. Every Friday night during hobbies they have kept the music studio alive with their renditions of many favorite songs such as Lullaby of Birdland, Spring Is Here and A-B-C Boogie. Besides working together they also accompanied such vocalists as Molly Pickett, Ibug Lewis and Tandy En- elow. We all have enjoyed hearing from the Four again this year. Mixed chorus began this year as one of the largest in many years with Betty Butcher as president, Ken Pennell, secretary, and Sandy Yoffee acting as librarian. Under the excellent leadership of Master Art Winsor and Teacher Barbara Canfield the chorus has given several enjoyable perform- ances. Tne first was Westtown's annual Christmas program. This year we had a great number of soloists participating in the chorus' presentation of The Creation. Our second program was the Spring Program of show songs and excerpts from Carmen. The highlight of the chorus was their production of Gilbert and Sullivan's Gondo- liers under the fine stage direction of Master Bernie Haviland. The operetta was a great success as we feel the entire year has been, our thanks to Master Art and Teacher Barbara. Bene Guerster Polly Gerenbeck Weeks of hectic preparation on the part of the class of 1956 culminated in the grand presentation to the Westtown Community and assembled guests of ' 'I Remem- ber Mama . The seniors remembered Mama with the expert help of J. Bernard Haviland and his able assistant, Agnes Finnie, and John Van Druten who wrote the play. By 8:00 on November 12, the actors had finished the hasty review of lines, all the walk-ons had stage fright and the audience was happily anticipating some top flight entertainment. The production did not disappoint anyone. Our guest artist, Butch , who played Uncle Elizabeth did so well he nearly stole a scene. The prompter did not prompt so very often and several cast members showed a real knack for acting. Best of all, no joke fell flatg every witticism crossed the footlights sans mishap. Incidently, the most attentive by far, were the seniors themselves who listened with devoted delight. After the final curtain fell, the cast knew rejoic- ing and regret. If it were not for rehearsals, the class would have presented another play immediately. It was a wonderful farce which con- cerned itself with 'beauty of complete and .utter confusion. The scenes were enlivened by the constant presence of scores of drunken knights, low-brow maids, egotistical stewards and beautiful ladies. These various characters spent most of their time scurrying furtively from one bush to another while hatching plots. The rehearsals were fran- tic, and the cast went staggering back to homework after many strenuous workouts provided by the gymnastics in- volved. However, the project was great fun, and the final result would hardly cause The Bard to suddenly begin push- ing up daisies in desperation. Evan Alder-son, John Horterl deem The stage crew, now in its twenty-sixth year, is composed of a group of boys who shoulder the responsibility for the running of the various plays, dances, Saturday night programs, and miscell- aneous events occurring during the school year. This year a semi- separate projection club was organized to handle the Kollect- ing-Boom Kinema and help with other films. It was under the di- rection of Bill Julian, who also did some work on the stage crew itself. Another able helper was Brandon James. The Senior Play, the Faculty Play, the Operetta, and the Shakespearean Play are the main events for the stage crew Satur- day night programs, especially the big dances,also take a good deal of preparation, however. Otherwise the boys are kept busy with weekly events, sponsored by the Steering Cmnnittee, and many special programs throughout the year. It has undertaken projects in connection with the John Carter Miseum, taken trips to such places as Hawk Mountain and Bomb Bay Hook, and has held a successful winter census. 'Ihe President, Bob Row, sincerely hopes that Freddy Swan and Prill Richie, respectively as Vice-President and Secretary, along with Master Jan, Master Al and Master Burdette will carry on further next year and help to put the Bird Club back into Westtown life.
