Master Dan, ever since his arrival here as headmaster five years ago, has been a friend and counsellor to faculty and student alike. His common sense, universal genialty, and sound judgment have won both our respect and friendship. To Master Charlie with his broad grin, innumerable puns, and sincere advice, and to Teacher Anne with her hospitality, love of fun and Pogo, and wise counsel, we owe not only the tireless and excellent execution of their work as deans, but also many hours of fun and relaxation. Teacher Rachel, our brisk associate principal and lover of tartans, may always be relied upon for advice both given and taken with a grain of salt. These four have become through these, their individual characteristics, our friends outside of, as well as in, the classroom. CLASS HISTURY The dynamic class of '55 had its humble beginning in the little room in Industrial where all senior classes originate. The founding fathers who were then present and who have stuck it out to the bitter end were lliarian Bonner, Nancy Swan, Dick Solomon, Jim Forsythe, Nancy Cohen, Jenni liains, Judy Graham, ,lack Kirk, Sue liie, Idalou Ellis and Katy Scott. In our next two years we went through all the phases that most other senior classes go through from realizing that dating might be fun to putting down our space cadet interests. These years were high- lighted by class parties on the farms of several local members, and here the class first learned to play together. Then in 10th grade a drastic change took place. We were no longer a day student class and we more than doubled in size. The school suddenly sat up and took notice. The newcomers added new life blood to the class which was immediately branded as the most radical, rowdy, and spirited class that Westtown had seen in many a year, it was not an uncommon thing to notice several frustrated faculty members scratching their heads in bewilderment. We were no longer just a bunch of individuals struggling for academic grades. We were the class of '55, the class with a difference. The times we had together that year, though not always approved by the higher officials, did more to weld us together as a class than any other thing. Our junior year the finishing touches were added and the class was rounded out with all of its raw materials assembled for the first time. A careful observer, if he looked closely, could see a new spirit beginning to spring up within us. We were not only the group of hackers which had often made people wonder what the school was coming to, but were all bound together into one unit, the class of '55, Responsibilities were given us, the school looked toward us for leadership and we eagerly accepted the challenge. We have become the school and the school us. '55 has comeg Master Tom Brown and Teacher Agnes Finnie have joined us with the final knot. At camp fires and skating parties we laughed together and shared good times together. In our studies we worked together. In our extracurriculars, whether they were on the soccer field or in chorus we found pleasure and satisfaction together in the sense of achievement. We are bound together by something that is bigger than anyone of us and yet is part of everyone of us. We are the class of '55. So I tried The election of officers for the Class of SS was something of an innovation in that it was held in the spring of 1954. We got off to a good start in September with Bill Klein and Anne Parker as president and vice presidentg Teddie Bersbach as secretaryg and Judy Grove and Art Garrett as joint treasurers. Bill, a letterman in several sports, has proved himself in the administration field too this year. Aided by Anne, he led many important class meetings and staged quite a few class parties. Teddie was an old hand at being secretary as she held the position last yearg Judy and Art both did a good job of holding onto the piggy bank . We are proud of the leadership our officers have given us this year and know they will try to keep the class together in years to come. The outcome of the other elections were: Glenn lludson and Becky Dimmette on the ring committee which got the school rings early this yearg and Bob Passmore, ,lim Matlack, Mary Baker, and Judy Cabot on this year's Amicus staffg they will carry on next year. There were also Council, Steering, Service, and Work Program committee elections producing leaders and members from both old and new students. Roller skating and Casino parties have brought out spirit. First Class is well supplied with brain, brawn, and beauty not to mention non-conformity and group re- sponsibility which are shaping it into a varied and interesting class. One of the largest, First Class is looking towards a grand Senior year. SECUND CLASS The class of 57 started this year with an almost doubling of their members, from 37 to 67. They were well represented in all the school committees such as Service, Work Program, Steer- ing and Religious Life Committees. They also had their elect- tions for class officers which ended in a rather international group. Bent Lawaetz from the Virgin Islands came out on top as President, Barbie Camp, their Venezuelan member, was Vice- President, and Ann Trowbridge, a die-hard New .I ersian,S ecretary- Treasurer. The varsity teams received several new and good additions to their teamsg next yea: promises to be an even better year in the way of sports. They have had several class parties such as roller skating and volleyball in which there was a warm and united feeling of class spirit. The dramatics depart- ment has been able to get many good recruits for its plays and skits. There are many budding actors which in the future will give us lots of entertainment. The prospects for this class look good for the coming years, with plenty of spirit, work and fun together. As has happened in past years, the boys outnumbered the girls thirty-one to eighteen. Their class advisersthis year were Teacher Keay Smith and Master john Watchorn. Teacher Mabel Elliott also helped them with some of their class parties though not an adviser. Colin Kelly did a good job as president, Rosie llibbard as vice president, and Dan Rie as secretary-treasurer. The class had a lot of spirit this year and is hoping for more next. The eighth grade had thirty students this year. The class advisers were Teacher Mabel Elliott, Teacher Gladys Fleming, and Master Bob English. -lean Kirk, Charlie West, Meryl Glauner, Gail Young, David Howard, Toni Hughes, and Geoffrey Lawn were the class officers. The Seventh grade under Master Lawrence Newhall had nineteen in the class. All were day students. Some of their class officers were Paul English, Francie Swan, Jackie Rowe, and Sue Eversfield. The latter two classes are coming along fine and we're looking forward to seeing them next year. Nell, who hails from New Milford, Conn., came to Westtown at the start of her junior year. Although she sometimes felt it would be hard for her to break into activities in only two years, she has proved to herself and everyone else that this is not the case. Besides playing on the hockey, basketball, and tennis teams, she also has shown her ability in music and dramatics by taking a lead in the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, Yoeman of the Guard, her first year at Westtown. When Nell took on her job as S.B.P., she was fairly familiar with the runnings of a council, as she served on the one at her old Alma Mater, New Milford High. At the opposite end of the house is Hans Lawaetz. Hans is one of the few students who can boast of living outside the United States. Coming from the St. Croix in the Virgin Islands in ninth grade, he quickly made himself popular and entered into many activities, especially athletics. Hans has served on the soccer, swimming, and baseball teams while here and was captain of the latter two in his senior year. As for the future, Hans, who is extremely fond of his home land, hopes to go to Cornell and then return once more to the Virgin Islands to own his own ranch. Under the leadership of Hans Lawaetz, S.B.P., and Pete Yoder, Chief Proctor, Boys' Council got under way before the school year started. As usual they took care of the Handbooks, the Christmas dance, and, as last year, found it was not only popular but profitable to do away with deten- tion. However, this year's big project has been the renovation of the boys' locker room. Wielding paint brushes fit's all in the wristll the council members transformed the locker room walls from a rather dingy grey to a morelively green and coral. Making this room into a lounge will undoubted- ly be a project for future Boys' Councils since it is still far from being completed. Council is grateful for the thoughtful guidance of Master Al Hay, his hospitality for council meetings, the waffles etc. for starving council members, the help of both permanent and rotating members, and the co- operation of the student body. In Wbicb Pooh Goes Visiting and Gets Into a Tigbt Place anus' icouncu Girls' Council for the year '54-'55 has done a splendid job. Under the leader- ship of Nell Miller and faculty adviser Anne Wood, the first important bill passed was ten 0-clock lights for freshman. The second was an unchaperoned meal per- mission per term for seniors. Council has had a number of rotating members from each class accompanied by always welcome visitors. The council suggestion box has never been slighted and decisions reached by council are read in evening collection. Well, the sole aim of this organization is to keep the complicated system of work jobs running smoothly. To mention work jobs to anyone is likely to produce a groan, and they do have their bad moments such as 6: 40 A.M. when the alarm clock opens the door and announces cheerfully that it's time to get up. But every- one will agree that work jobs are a worthwhile part of Westtown. The W.P.C. under the able leadership of Rosemary Harvey and Don Swartz, Master Russ, and Teacher Mary have kept the jobs going well and have introduced a few changes to help them go more smoothly. They have had lots of co-operation from the student body and thanks to this, they have had a successful year. With the new additions of a representative from stage crew and rotating members from the three upper classes, Betty and Pete had a fine group for discussing new ideas and deciding evening entertainments for the following week. Wednesday night dances have now become standard practice. This year, novelty was introduced by having them occasionally in the new gym's minor sports' room. Music was often provided by the Uncalled Four . The roller skating begun last year was still flourishingg and the annual volleyball tournaments gave everyone a chance to participate. For those who liked to talk or sing, Steering Committee planned open parlorsn and South Room. Quiz programs and talent shows were interesting and often surprising. The Brown and White captains were nominated early in the year, resulting in the election of Don Perera to head the Whites and ,Iohn James for the Browns. These two chose their teams and the Brown and White games soon got under way. Technically, these intramural captains are not members of the Board even though they are concerned with a very important part of the athletic program. The Brown and White teams are becoming increasingly more import- antg they will be reviewed again at the end of this year, although it's not likely they'll be done away with. Headed by Cissie Harlow and ,Ion Ely, with under-secretary Debbie Borton and Treasurer Alan Willcox, the committee has striven to interest the student body in active participation in its concerns. Enthus- iastic response has come from requests for service in the way of apple picking, sandwich-making, knitting, week-end work camps and West Chester hospital crews. Other fields of activity have been starving the student body at frugal meals and then stuffing them with sandwiches after hobbies. Book and bake auctions, with Master Fred as auctioneer, as well as the sale of Westtown dogs have drained all our allowances somewhat, but for the worthy cause of financing a summer work camp in Germany. However, it is entirely responsible for the program of Vesper services and serves as a place where ideas and concerns of a religious nature may be discussed, under the supervision and guidance of Tom Purdy. The Committee is called upon to consider new ideas, and to discuss suggestions in regard to the services. The Vesper program was originally instituted to aid those students who felt the need of some definite church service. With this in mind, the committee has tried this year to keep the Vespers more like a chapel service than a mere series of lectures on religious topics. Directed meditations and meditations to music, and services by members of the faculty were also used to convey this spirit of worship. The songs pre- sented during the octet's several performances were mostly old barbershop favorites mixed with some popular numbers. This group may be heard vigorously stretching their vocal chords every Wednesday and on Friday during hobbies. The octet consists of Pete Day and Tom Taylor singing top tenorg Don Swartz and Pete Yoder singing lead tenorg Dave Corlcey and Irv Atkinson on baritone, and ,lim Todd and Ted Webster singing bass. STAGE CREW The stage crew, started in 1931, is too often regarded as merely a group of mechanical-minded young men studying the intricacies of pulling a stage curtain or running a projector. Under the supervision of Burdette Bernard, these boys help out with the usual Saturday night programs and Wednesday dances. They are saved from a hum- drum existence by being unexpectedly called upon to rescue an actor- in-distress, like removing a nail from a sabotaged piano, becoming the brunt of a ventriloquist's jokes, or supplying necessary properties at opportune moments. Such a job has its advantages, too - appearing at the big dances in shirt-tails ostensibly to change a victrola needle, for instance. These few have to know how to make the most of limited resources, not only in the gym or auditorium, but also in places such as the Greenwood where ingenuity is really taxed. ' A BIRD CLUB This year the once powerful Bird Club, which had be- come extinct, returned in all its glory. In the fall seven stalwarts met with Master Al Hay, and rechartered the club, with ,lack Kirk, president, Tex Rowe, secretary, and Tom Towe, treasurer. When the membership soared to twenty-four, the club set up the requirement that a would- be-member must identify eight birds on a winter day. With the help.of Master ,Ian Long and Master Burdette Bernard, it has taken the annual Bombay Hook and Hawk Mountain trips plus several shorter trips. Throughout the year it has gotten outside lecturers such as Albert Linton and has taken advantage of Karl Striedick's knowledge of hawks and Mel Keiser's knowledge of warblers. With the Bird Club going strong this year, it looks as though it has a big future ahead. In Which Pooh and Piglet Go Hunting and Nearly Catch a Woozle UNCALLED FUUR Ken Pennell, Rudy Houk, Jim Todd, Polly Gerenbeck, Dick Brown. The Uncalled Four is a relatively new group here at Westtown, preceded only by Bill Cadbury and the Skyliners two years ago. The Four started playing together early last fall as a quartet featuring Dick Brown on the piano, jim Todd on the bass, Rudy lloulc on the drums, and Ken Pennell on the clarinet and the tenor sax. Soon they discovered they needed a little more rhythmg they added Polly Cerenbeck on the guitar. This addition made the group a quintet. Rather than change their name, they called themselves technically The Uncalled Four plus One . They have played at several dances, sometimes with the support of vocalist, Doug Lewis, and are constantly astir in the music studio rearranging some of the old standards, and every now and then coming up with an original. Some of their more famous renditions which we have grown to like are Sometimes l'm Happy and On the Sunny Side of the Street. We have certainly enjoyed hearing from this new musical group this year. ' This year's soccer team did not look too promising at the start, for there were few returning lettermen. However, the team drilled hard in fundamentals, had a lot of fun, and entered into the spirit of the game. The scores of the first games do not tell the story. The players were at times very lucky, and often played soccer below their capabilities. But, at the end of the season the spirit and soccer know-how rose to great heights. The George School game was good, solid, skillful soccer. School spirit was tremendous. The team came from behind and won. Girard was beaten in a hard fought game to close the season. The win, the first over Girard in fourteen years, was very gratifying as was the team's steak din- ner at the farm house. Dave Corkey, ,lim Forsythe and Dave jenkins were named on the All- lndependent team. This was a very successful and satisfying year, and it is to be hoped that next year's team will do as well. At the start of the hockey season, Nancy Swan was chosen Varsity captain and Cissie Harlow was elected to lead the Jayvees. The Varsity began the season by beating Moorestown 3-2, and there were high hopes for an undefeated season. They soon discovered that life isn't all sunshine when they faced an unbeaten Wilmington team and were defeated 3-0. ln the last outside game, the hockey team showed what team work and team spirit can do as they came from behind to tie Tower Hill, the best team they played all season. Beautiful stick work and quick passing ended the season with a good game of hockey. The hockey team won't soon forget sloshing around the hockey field in the pouring rain ito keep in shapel, raking wet leaves on Work Day in- stead of playing Ellis School, or the faculty game. This remarkable 13-3 record is one of the best if not the best record any Westtown basketball team has ever obtained. The powerful squad romped over the first three opponents. Not only did they post easy wins over traditional rivals such as George School, Germantown Friends, Tower Hill, and Girard, but in the climax of the season they took the return game with P.M.C. and ruined Moorestown's 22-game winning streak. Finally after an overtime play this point by point game ended with a two point victory for Westtown, the first in seven years of clashes. ln the Friends' School Jamboree at George School, Westtown placed four players on the all-star team. The team was led by Captain Dave Hobbs. Hobbs' long set shots along with Larry Forman's drives and jump shots paced the Brown and Whites with over 2X3 of the scoring. Around this strong of- fense were different combinations of players including James, Scarborough, Jenkins, Perera, Klein, Passmore, and Corkey. GIRLS' BASKETBALL This year the girls' basketball team captained by Sue Richie finished up their season quite well, after a discouraging start. Although they lost the first four, the girls crashed through the remaining games, dropping only oneg the final totals were five lost and four won. Even though the record is not outstanding, it shows by its trend that there was a definite improvement in the ability of the team. This is a factor of just as great importance or greater than team records and should be recognized as such. Of course the team didn't accomplish this alone, and a great deal of credit goes to the two coaches, Mary Borton and Mary Webb. The varsity line-up for the season included forwards, lngie lieiniger, high scorer, Nell Miller, Sue llorsfield and Genie Parker. Team work was the most important factor in this combination. Guards were Bonnie Moxie, Craigie Hammond, Hutchie Dawes and Sue Richie. As was extremely important, the guards worked as a unit, otherwise the whole zoning system which they use would have been worthless. Next year, since only four seniors were on the team, the same girls will be on the squad again, which should provide an improved game of basketball and an excellent season. The team, coached by Master Fred Swan with Master Phil Lawrence as his assistant, on top of a good record, defeated George School for the first time in the eleven years these two teams have clashed. The '55 mermen broke three records this year and seriously threatened many more. ln the Malvern meet Jim Todd narrowed down the time for the 100 yard freestyle to 58.9 ' seconds. The medley relay team, Mike McCulley, Cal Smith, and Captain Lawaetz, cut the time down in this event in the same meet. Four freestylers, Schofield, Spinney, Todd, and Lawaetz, took 1.5 seconds off the 200 yard freestyle relay in the meet with Eddystone. Mike McCulley came within half a second of the back stroke record during the George School meet. Captain Lawaetz also rallied in this meet by just missing the record in the 200 yard freestyle, and also swim- ming the fastest 50 yards in the freestyle relay that Westtown has ever seen. Pete Badeau made the diving a very strong event for the Brown and Whites. Smith and Schofield also excelled in the 50 yard freestyle and the breast stroke respectively. Jane McCulley was manager this year and Cindy Otto, the blond senior from Puerto Rico, led the team as captain. Much of this can be credited to the eight new, peppy cheerleaders who, after the much encouraged tryouts, were chosen by co-captains, Judy Graham and Jenni Rains. These girls are Sue Richie, Sally Gilda, Bobbi Cary, .lan -Hogenauer, Peggy Zook, Carolyn Vicary, and Betty Nesbitt. Some new and much-needed cheers where learned at meetings and then were introduced at pep rallies. During the soccer season some bonfire pep rallies were held outsideg these en- couraged a lot of good school spiritg consequently, the support behind the teams has grown this year. , Four cheerleaders were also chosen to cheer at the Brown and White games, in the hope that this would increase the enthusiasm for the intermural sports. The possibility of boy cheerleaders was discussed this year but none were added to the squad. Perhaps the boys will really be interested next year. How about it? Richie.
