Thus we approached the Christmas holidays. The senior girls caroled in the wee hours of the morning after the dance and later were fed at the Swans' with a sumptuous breakfast of sausages. coffee. and hot rolls. etc. Then the night hefore vacation. when the excitement was running high. the glee clubs and the Mixed Chorus gave the annual Christmas program. XYith Margaret 'lihorpe's expert di- recting and Phyllis Cox's on the ball ac- companying, the whole show was highly suc- cessful. Due praise should lirst go to Master liernie both for his co-direction of the operetta and his acting of Ko-Ko. The latter he did with his usual good humor and fun. especially in his touching love scene with Katisha. Franny Carey, in which his pathetic solo. Tit XYillow. brought tears even into the eyes of the hard- hearted lady he was wooing. Franny. almost The Echoes of unrecognizable with a grey wig, blacked out teeth, and a scarlet shawl, did an excellent job in her difficult role as a lady whose love was unrequited because it took her so long to school anyone to love her. In a gorgeous black outfit. -lim Yarnall was an imposing Mikado as he enumerated his punishments which nt the crime. one of which was a boiling peroxide bath for all students who dye their lovely locks yellow. Yirgil lfvans portrayed a particularly con- vincing l'ooh-liah. the Lord High Everything Else. who had such great family pride that it absolutely pained him Qnot to mention his 'protoplasmal ancestorsnj when he humbled Tl1ir'iy-.tix af- -W fufvv W 0ur Festival himself to accept a bribe. Curt lYilliams as Nanki l'oo was a very good wandering minstrel as he sang about the varied songs of his cata- logue. and his love scenes with Yum-Yum. Marty Denton,- I would kiss you fondly thus tbehind a fanj-looked almost authentic. Sweet and charming school girls were Yum- Yum. l'itti-Sing flinie Richardsonj. and Peep- llo 1-leanne Mcliridej as they sang among other things Three Little Maids from School. Marty's beautiful voice showed to the best ad- vantage in her solo. The Sun lYhose Rays Are All Ablazeu and Enie was especially good in her description of the horrible supposed ex- ecution of Nanki-Poo. Pete Klein cut capers around the stage as Th i rf y-sown the nobleman Pish-Tush and the trio in which he with Pooh-liah and Ko-Ko described a pestilential prison was one of the highlights of the show. Then there was Ko-Ko's at- tendant, Bobby Hern, and also Dave Mercer as a noble lord whose one line solo placed him with the leads. The chorus on the whole did a wonderful job and outstanding were the opening boys' chorus and the finale. lYith joyous Shout. Greatly adding to the final effect were the japanese costumes. make-up. and staging and the cooperation of all these committees plus the enthusiastic participation of the chorus and leads yielded a remarkable and outstanding production.
