Not only do the bright col- ors make the fishermen more obvious to the fish, but also to some farmer hunting for trespassers. LUEDERS Faculty Adviser RUTH VAIL ELMA CLARK The Girls, Student Council, consisting of the Dean of Girls and ten rep- resentatives of the student body, deals with the problems which arise at girlsi end. The Council usually meets once a week and cases of disobedience are discussed, following which some definite action is taken. The administer- ing of justice is almost entirely in the hands of the students. They treat the offender as they think best. The councils business is not always of this nature, however, since frequently the question of improvement for West End is considered. The principal aim of the Council is to promote good feeling and a sense of individual responsibility among the girls. +.LJP; ! - rrvr I T I71'tt , .. :1. :- A. 1,7,! SWAN The purpose of the Boys Student Council this year was to bring into better cooperation the two groups of the school, namely, the Faculty and the Student Body. This type of government is an attempt to give the members of the Student Body a fair voice in the administration of justice to those Who have broken regulations. It is also a means for Students to voice their needs and suggestions. It has been the wish of the Council to hold its meetings open to all who desire to come. The Council has also encouraged those Who have felt that they were unfairly treated to bring their cases before the Coun- cil for further discussion. This course has done much to relieve feeling be- tween students and Council Members. :::r--'- . 3:7: 1:. l a ,-,,-a .m- '5': -.., :r-13' '1 -n - - - 4'!!! .1544 :11 '1 ,- 'E. 2'11; THE BROWN AND WHITE BOARD Sports Editors MARGARET J. After the Operetta, they prepared for the Parents Day program in which they have a con- siderable part each year. The Glee Club is composed of boys from the upper two Classes and is under the able direction of Margaret Talbert Thorp. 4 :2; 4r .w, riff : HLAV' . e. . We all sit in comparative peace while a group of ten white-coated boys dash down the aisles to provide us with nourishment and then dash out in the kitchen again for seconds. The secret of their success lies in Miss Braeunigjs able direction and Bob Ormsbyts careful management. In any case they keep us from starvation. A waitefs life is not entirely made up of work, however. They amuse them- selves and others in the recesses of the kitchen, have the privilege of extra ice- cream, go on two camp suppers a year, and last but not least, are well paid. vat :Fl -3. A in; r V DELTA AND TRIANGLE Delta and Triangle are the honorary societies for boys and girls respectively, to which those who are outstanding in all-round ability are admitted. Member- ship in Delta requires an average of eighty for the two preceding semesters and a. certain number of points, augmenting with each more advanced Class, for ath- letic and extra curricular activities. To be admitted to triangle, it is necessary to earn a seventy-flve average and a number of credits varying withyonets class. The higher the average is the fewer points are required. Candidates for each group must be approved by both the student council and the faculty in order that those members who are admitted will be able in leadership and scholarship, and loyal to the interests of the school. 4.Al.. . BROWN The Peace Society, which was introduced this year by Helen Louise Brown, has already made considerable progress. During the year Henry Cadbury, Clar- ence Pickett, Frederick Libby, and other well known Peace leaders have given lectures and led discussion groups. Every month a delegation from the society has been sent into the Foreign Policy association in Philadelphia. The Peace workers are hoping for even greater progress next year. LE CERCLE FRANCAIS La Presidente Le Secretaire VIRGINIA H. HUSTON La Vice-Presidente JOHN EARLE BETTE RINGo La Tresoiriere Le Tresoirier ROSEMAIN J. CREIGHTON LEONARD THOMPSON The French Club had a very successful season if it be judged by the num- ber in attendance at the meetings and by the guests of honor which included Carroll T. Brown, Alfred Glausser of Pendle Hill, Mlle. Germaine Mellon who was Visiting the U.S., and Paul Leyssac who is an old friend of French Club. John Earle was kind enough to give an account of his trip to France and at Christmas time a fete was held as a celebration. The season was ended by the usual welcomed table feed at the Lake House. THE GERMAN CLUB President Secretary BARBARA MASON Treasurer MARJORIE S. TAYLOR MARY ELIZABETH FARR The German Club has had a wide variety of programs this year. Barbara Cary, of Germantown, who spent a year in Germany, told about Christmas in Germany, and how she spent the vacation there a year ago. German students studying at Pendle Hill have come over to talk to the club, telling about a school day for a German high school student. Each meeting begins with the singing of some of the German songs, quite a few of which have become well known and liked. The Spring meeting was a itWanderingh, the members went over to the Pine Forest for the afternoon. THE LATIN CLUB Consuls Proctors ESTHER B. FOWLER MARGARET J. SHOEMAKER NELSON O. LINDLEY Scriba GILLETT WHITNEY PHOEBE P. TAYLOR This year Latin Club had several very entertaining meetings at which Latin games were played and songs sung. It was again fortunate in having as speaker Dr. John Gummere of Penn Charter who told of some very interesting experi- ences he had had on a recent Visit to Italy. Latin Club was asked to give a Saturday night program this year and three plays were presented. Thanks to the work of Tom and Nan Brown, the season proved quite a success, closing with the annual table feed, at the Lake House. THE ART CLUB P resid emf GILLETT WHITNEY Secretary LLOYD SWIFT Treasurer Treasurer ARTHUR T HORP MARY BARCLAY The Art Club meetings, this year, have been held around the cheery fire- place at George and Janet Whitneyts. Most of the programs have had to do with famous artists and their paintings. On one occasion a guessing game was played and on another, two members told of seeing the originals of old masters they had seen while in Europe. As a new project the Art Club gave a Satur- day night program of tiliving portraits? Janet Whitney told the histories of the artists and pictures. Instead of the usual Club table feed at the end of the year, the Art Club, this year, went as a group, to the Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta in Swarthmore. THE PIANO CLUB President ADAH DAVIs Secretary Treasurer KATHERINE PARKER MARGUERITE COOPER This year, the Piano Club programs have consisted of short biographies of famous composers, and have been followed by examples of'their works, given by the members. This new type of program proved to be entertaining as well as educational and brought out the talents of many of the students. The crown- ing event of the year was Mme. Soudarskaya, who had studied at St. Petersburg, under Anton Rubenstein. She told the club about him, and being a concert pianist herself, played several different selections for the group. Every meet- ing was followed by refreshments and some by informal group singing. ORCHESTRA Under the able direction of Francis D. Hole, the Westtown orchestra has continued their policy of giving three Friday night programs a year, all of which showed good cooperation and an excellent representation of instruments and classes. Hopes for more good contributions by the orchestra are high as many of this years members were underclassmen. We can look forward with great anticipation to many more successful concerts for Mothers Day each year and for special recitals. TREASURE SEEKERS Hopes for the 1938 Treasure Chest, the annual collection of student poetry, are still on the ascent. The members of Janet Whitneyis poetry club, named the Treasure Seekers, have had their inspiring gatherings and have learned to listen to and enjoy good poetry under Janet Whitney,s careful and beneficial leadership. 1w 2 A37 10 11 37 10 15 37 10 21 37 10 29 37 1L 5 37 11 18 37 GIRL? There is no electricity in the Camp, no radios, no motor boating. t Roads are ragidly destroying the wildness of the Adir- ondack Wilderness; but as yet no road allows automobiles to drive to the Camp. We live in a Wild, isolated community of our own; by boat, canoe, and foot we explore the woods and waters in all directions. Back Log is definitely opposed to progress. F red J.
