T ,.L,.5g-wen., M FCDREWORD ' '... the Oracle said, All things have two handles - Beware of the wrong one. In life too often the scholar errs with mankind and forfeits his privilege. In this Geophysical Year, it has become evident that Emerson's scholar must occupy a niche never before accorded him in our society. He cannot err with mankind else he destroy mankind. He cannot forfeit his privilege for in so doing he will destroy his very purpose. He must, alone, guided by the wis- dom of the past, the knowledge of the present, and the promise of the future, pursue his intellectual dream. He cannot be anchored to mankind in his re- search. Yet he cannot ignore mankind, for to mankind he is indebted for his laboratory and his tools, His intellectual achievement must not be confined to science alone, although at this moment in history it may seem the expedient course to pursue. To concentrate in this Held alone could plunge us into a Dark Age - darker than the world has ever known. A world without its poets, without its artists, and without its philosophers would be sick and puny. Happily, our years at Westridge have awakened in us an intellectual curiosity. Our parents and our teachers have revealed to us a few of the innumerble secrets of the universe. It is in our own hands, guided by our Creator, that we may now pursue the dictates of our minds and souls. By maintaining a delicate balance between the two, we have every chance of grasping the right handle of which the Oracle spoke. IN MEMORY OF CLAUDIA WINN BONNELL Class of 1958 . . . When lofty thought Lifts a young heart above its mortal lair, And love and life contend in it, for what Shall be its earthly doom, the dead live there And move like winds of light on dark and stormy air Shelley Dear Miss Peterson, It is with great pleasure that we dedicate this book to you. To you we owe our deepest gratitude for maintaining the high scholastic standards for which Westridge prides itself. For your deep understanding and genuine participation in all our activities, for your undying interest in each one of us, and for your unfailing trust in us - with our occasional frailties, we thank you. She is an art addict and frequently plays the role with her dark glasses and checkered hat. Also a girl of whimspshe fancies ideas of trading her Chevy in for a small bug , possibly an Austin Healey. Her provocative eyes attract much mascu- line attention, but she feels that Males are con- ceited, although they do have their purpose . Cabin is planning to major in architecture and will probably attend Cal, where we are sure she will have fun. High Society LINDA BAN DY Linda is the member of the Senior Class whose insight into history made her a logical candidate for President of News and Views. She has kept us aware of the worlds affairs and in addition, the club under her direction has included pro- grams of general Culture interest. Always ready for a bridge game or a heated debate Qin or out ot' classj, Bandy spends much of her time fre- quenting the Caltech library. Next year she is a possible candidate for Colorado College. I9 ff Oh la la! CAROL BARNUM Although known to Consume large quantities of Mona's food, Barnie somehow easily manages to remain the sylph of the class. Never seen with- out a merry and mischievous twinkle in her eyes, Carols interests are widespread. Biology, Glee Club, Pandias, a certain little French poodle and Flintridge dances seem to have occupied much of her time, Noted for her unforgettable giggle and her constant fear of trumping her partner's ace, Barnie will be a great asset to some western campus next year. Ready or not, here l come. ALICE BOYNTON Alice is noted for her beautiful wavy hair and cute grin. She is game to try again at Caltech, and always ready for a good clean joke . Al is often seen in 21 green Chevy, racing on Culi- forniu Street, two minutes before the school bell resounds. She spends her summers in Nantucket and being indigenous to the East, plans to go there for college. A lover of bermudas and loafers, Al often spends her week ends at the beach or in the mountains. We will miss her next year and so will C.l.T. Intellectual curiosity? ANN CALLAWAY Ann is our tall and witty Senior who has con- tributed much to the literary department of West- ridge. In class, while looking studious, she is always ready for the teachers head to turn. Ann was Editor of the Ouflook this year but always had time to write a satiric article for the Spyglmr. On the week-ends, Ann might be found under a history book-but probably with her eyes in a closed position. She loves California, its horses, weather, and its people, but will head East for college next year. Reader of the classics ELIZABETH CURRIER The combination of beautiful red hair and soft green eyes is Betsy's most outstanding feature. She is an advocate of art in all of its phases and her talents in the field have been displayed in Mr. Frames art class and by her sketches of the in- ternal structure of the crayfish in Biology Lab. With Betsy as Vice-President of the Mask and Brush, the club has taken great strides forward in organization as well as production. She enter- tains a love for Balboa where she spends part of her summers sailing and swimming. Betsy plans a future on the West Coast and will be a great addition to the college of her choice. lllinois, here I come! NANCY ENNIS Adding 'shadef' ol' color and gayety to the Senior Class, Nancy cannot be beaten. She is usually heard discussing a namesake ol last year's class, Harry , The Mask and Brush productions of this school year have been aided tremedously by Nancy's help and interest. Sh: spent her junior summer in Europe, bringing back many Bohemian customs and a white MGA. Noted for her bursts of enthusiasm, acting ability, and intellectual prowess, Nancy will have a wonderful time at Northwestern where she plans to continue her studying. ff. Dear Mom, sorry not to have written sooner SEVINC ERTURK Sevo, who joined the Senior Class this year on an American Field Service Scholarship, hails from Istanbul. Many a class has been enlivened by her descriptions of Turkish customs and by her ex- pressive manner of talking. Since English is not her native language, one would expect her to find some difficulty, but much to the contrary! Sevo possesses the coveted ability to get the highest grades on the English vocabulary quizzes. An adept athlete, Sevo was elected Head of Swim- ming for this year and as well she has been an enthusiastic participant in many other phases of Westritlge life. I ' B 4 .1 Hard day at Student Commission JEAN FARRAND Jeanie is the girl on the go. One ol the most versatile Student Body Presidents that Westritlgc- has ever had, her warm and friendly spirit has been felt in all phases of scliool life, -lean has not only lent her talents to the Student Commission, but also to the Glee Club, music assemblies, and every varsity as well. Nor is her poignant per- formance as Father Christmas soon to he lor- gotten. Envied for her French Riviera summer, her family Corvette, and her chignon hairdo, .leanie's abilities are sure to be appreciated on 'the lfarmf Spade Cooley CAROL FISHER Cheshire cat smile, u. twinkling eye, ami it's another Fisher First . Full of ideas and jokes, Carol is always a welcome sight. When it comes to helping out, Carol is ever willing, as is shown by her participation in Fortnighters. Hard work and interest earned for Carol the Vice-Presidency of the Glee Club. In this oflice, she sang for the Christmas program and worked on the operetta. Next year Carol plans to attend a College in her native state, possibly at Berkeley. ev' Winiler of the 1959 Economy Run HEATHER GOSS A Westridge student during her Sophomore and Senior years, Heather is currently Class Secre- tary. Full of enthusiasm and fun, she has a great variety of interests. Heather was very striking as an Inlook model this year. In Music Assembly as well as in Glee Club she has demonstrated her talent as a songstress. She is interested in sports and was elected Captain of the Volleyball Team. Heather is partial to parties, sun, and boys, and thus spends much of her time at the beach. Balboa is going to miss her next year. Anchors - away! HILLARY HAN EY As Head of Wfelfare this year, Hillary has shown a serious interest in all she has undertaken. With original ideas, she has made welfare work more meaningful. However, this job does not seem to keep her too busy to be interested in others around her. With a spontaneous smile, she always has time to be cheerful and is a well liked member of the Senior Class. Envied for her 'Harvard sweater for two', Hillary usually spends her Friday evenings engaged in the art of correspondence. Faithful to Southern California, Hillary plans to stay here for college. urges., Across the land on knee and hand BARBARA HOLWAY As the etlicient Editor of the Spyglass this year, Barbie, with pen in hand, may frequently be seen proof reading several articles at the same time in a rush to get to the printer. One of the few Sen- iors possessing any knowledge of German, Barbie passes some of her spare time recounting her summer spent with an Austrian family. With this family she had the chance to tour Italy, bring- ing home many experiences and memories. East- ward bound next year, Barbie looks forward to a possible junior year in the University of Vienna. SY. 3-77.22 ANN HORTON Ann's ever willing and pleasant personality has made her a popular member of the Senior Class. Usually seen driving around Pasadena in her new brown and yellow Ford, Ann has for- tunately kept on the safe side of the P.P.D. QPasadena Police Departmentj. Many of her summers are spent in a small mountain commun- ity where she enjoys swimming, lounging in the sun, and the casual social life. Being one of the more dexterous girls in the class, Ann was elected Head of the Art Club, The University of Arizona will be gaining a talented girl when she goes there to further her education next year. They tried to tell us we're too young JUDITH JONES Wheii howls of laughter echo through the halls of Westriclge, it is probable that Miss jones has provoked them. Noted for her sense of humor, skill in gym, inconsistent diet and being in love, there is never a dull moment when jonsie is near- by. Judy is often seen bugging around town in gray and white Buick scaring autos littler than her's. Combining fine organization with her su' perb musical talent, Judy did a grand job as Head of Music Assemblies. Her main loves consist of Southern tobacco growers, beach boys qweekend or full-timej, hi-tis and the Kingston Triog few will forget her pet sayings, Hi Bod and Hey Pneumonia. t peace with the wor VIRGINIA LIEF Ginger is most noted for her pleas in Study Hall for picture money , her love for walking on her tiptoes, and her liberal democratic views, which she will dispute with anyone, anywhere. Her interests are wide-spread: on the academic side she boasts a mastery ol the French accent, or what sh: calls futile attempts thereof, on the other hand she holds a suppressed desire to attend a Bacchus revival. As well she excels in dramatics, bridge, crocheting and knitting, and has attained the fine talent of 'hula-hoopingf Ginger plans to attend Stanford next fall, where she will major in history. Squaw Valley 1960 ? CYNTHIA NASH As Head of Romans this year, Cindy has brought about much enthusiasm for her team as well as for the school, and is often heard saying Come on Romans-we have the spirit! Cindy is Stanford bound next fall and will liven up the campus with her extremely mathematical brain. Seldom is Cindy without hand knit socks or a special lush thick hand-knit sweater. Quick to smile, and just as quick to enter into a bridge game, she will be missed next year. X Sartre says GLORIA NEWHOUSE Glo , frequently heard referring to Freud, Sartre, and lung, is our psychoanalyst, and is gradually tearing the veil from the collective un- conscious of the Senior Class. She has even been known to identify herself with one of the questionable characters in American History. Gloria was a smashing hit as the B. w. B. fBlonde with Beretj on Senior Ditch Day, when she 'let loose' with an African chant. Even better is her unique ability in customizing pink cars, al- though they say that any gate post will do the same to any auto . . . Glo is U.C.L.A. bound where she plans to take 'pre-med' and will have plenty of work and fun combined. Wye. E English honors l JAN ET NORWOOD jan, tall and attractive, is one of the few brave souls who frequented the Caltech campus this year. Her main interests lie in the field of athletics, cutting males , and she is always ready for a good game of bridge. She also seems to be very artistically inclined, as is shown by her otlices of Art Editor of the Iulook and Head of the Make-up Committee for Mask and Brush. jan has analyzed herself as a typical, well-rounded neurotic- psy- chotic-the best adjustment to the modern world, she claims. Looking into the future, she plans to go to S.C., and then intends to marry a million- naire and own a record shop in Tahiti. Good luck, jan! Snow job ELSBETH PEARSON jo is a girl with varied interests and a talent for the unusual. It seems that on Ditch Day, an infamous visitor whom she calls Charlie Brown, paid a visit to the White Sun Guest Ranch. Re- sult: amendment to the Seniors' privileges giving Seniors the right to wear fraternity pins. Closer to home, we find an indirect attachment to Cal- tech, on whose behalf jo can be heard pleading Men for 59 . Another institution with which she is more directly connected is Pomona, to which she frequently speeds in her hot chevy which can wipe any Corvette! She plans to stay in the West and will major in Animal Husbandry. Gramma, what big feet you have! ANNE PIEROSE For the past year, Anne's organization and friendliness have made her a more than able Vice- President of the Student Body. Quickly identified as the girl with the pixie haircut, she is always cheerful-one of the secrets of her success. Anne has been outstanding both in extra-curricular ac- tivities and scholastically. She is well known for her formidable intellect, love of physics, quiet study halls, and her ice cream diets. For many a year that Red Indian has been calling Annie- Stanford is to be her stamping ground next year. We . 353 V M L: naw- Say when MARGARET POHLMAN Margie has the distinct honor of having been 1 S at Westritlge longer than any other of her class- matesg she has held many offices, the most recent being Vice-President of the Senior Class. Her good looks and poise earned her the title of Miss Westritlge and made her zx favorite model at the lnlook Tea. As a result of her summer spent in France, Merg sports a Parisian haircut, has high standing in her French class, and is often overheard reminiscing about her European va- cation. 4 Make mine milk KATHERINE POOLE K. T., one of the more poetic members ol the Senior Class, spent her junior year of school in Switzerland. ln this aesthetically pleasing terrain she clevelopecl a love for and skill at skiing in which she inclulges at every available chance. JANE PRESTON Janie, envied for her long brown hair and trim figure, is generally seen partaking of Mona's munchy melba toast and making additions to the daily Senior news Qgossipj session. If you see a long body 'motivating' rapidly fsicleways and forwardj, muttering Ee gads, I forgot! , you can be sure it's Janie. Her loves vary from driving tat which she is a prob, to modeling, to relaxing at the beach. As the enthusiastic Head of the Athletic Association this year, she has done much to promote the school spirit, from a Tig- ger for Mascot campaign to participating on the teams herself. Noted for her excellence in tennis, she can frequently be seen carrying a racket.
