- .. . . . -.-..-..-.-.. - - .J - - Selzkzd, uf War Maz'den It was dusk in Walhalla, home of the gods. Selind, the war maiden, had just returned from the battlefield. She was unutterably weary. Her winged horse Brun- hund had carried many warriors to Walhalla that day. Many times had Selind shouted her battle cry of, Yo ho, to ho She longed for the peace and quiet of the War Maidens palace Hex shining armor felt unbearably heavy, and her eyelids were heavy with weariness As Brunhund and Selind reached the War Maidens' palace, Selind leapt lightly from the horses back Dear old Brunhund, I love you, said Selind, as she patted he horses long white mane And now be gone. Brunhund rose slowly into the air. Selind watched him ily away, first a great white spot, and then finally nothing but a little speck, hardly visible. With a sigh she went into the palace, and to her wonderful suite of rooms. Selind had no sooner removed her armor than there was a knock at the door. When she opened it she found a sister war maiden. I'm sorry to interrupt you, Selind dear, she said, but Wotan commands you to come to him at once. Did he not tell you what he wished me for? asked Selind. No, he only said he wished to see you immediately, was the reply. Hastlly she dressed to go to Wotan. As she dressed many thoughts passed through her brain Why had Wotan summoned her? Was she to be punished as Brunhilde had been Had she done anything wrong? When she appeared before Wotan a few moments later, she was very beautiful. Since Brunhilde was no longer with them, Selind was the most beautiful war maiden in Walhalla And now she stood before Wotan, tall and straight. Her soft garments clung to her perfectly formed body. Her long titian hair was almost a garment in itself there was so much of it Clear violet eyes looked steadily at Wotan as she said, You sent for me, Father Yes, said Wotan in his deep though musical voice, I sent for you, Selind. Please seat yourself, for I have something of grave importance to tell you. Selind obeyed his request and seated herself on a luxurious divan near by. Wotan, she noticed, was troubled, and his one eye shifted uneasily. What is it, Father? she asked Be not afraid to tell me, for I will gladly obey your minutest wish. Ah Selind you are as good as you are beautiful, sighed Wotan. Then as with great eifoxt he proceeded Selind the fate of the gods lies in the palm of your hand. It is in your power to lead us to destruction or safety Selinds white brow clouded I am your servant, Father, and you are all-wise, bu I understand you not I shall explainj said Wotan If the gods are destroyed now, the deeds which they have hoped to do and which they should do, will never be accomplished. We are in no condition to iight Selind, for fighting now would mean ruin. The gnomes are ready at the slightest excuse to make war upon us. The giants would join the gnomes. Against them we have no chance He paused. But I Wotan, my king? interrupted Selind. The gnomes have demanded your hand in marriage for their king. Unless their request is obeyed they will proclaim war upon us. So you see, Selind, it is up to you. No, let me finish, my daughter as Selind made a slight movement as if to speak. If you consent to this sacrifice, Selind, it means you will never see Walhalla again. You must live under the earth until Walhalla is destroyed. It is a big sacrifice and you will never see us again Ah father, and one of Selinds white hands clutched convulsively at her throat. That one moan hurt Wotan more than if he had been struck. fContinued on page 951 11 . , N . . 1 u t 1 - u 11 - in u - 11 - - , . 11 1, u 11 - - - 11 - u - 1 1 a - 1 - 11 . , . t 11 u - 1 - 1 1 u - 1 , . u - ' 11 1 n ' ' . . ,, 41 11 - 1 -51:11.-.-.-wvweeafh.-f.-.-.-.5355-Q,-.-.---4.11.56W Page Ninety-tlivn
