He was secretive, shy and seemed to have a constant look of fear on his face. He was the sort of man who would keep looking back over his shoulder as he walked down the street. The coroner paused for a while as though going back into the reaches of his memory for more facts. He lived in a little shack at the edge of Bardstown, here, and would come to town about twice a month to buy what food, he and his wife needed. He would never trust Mary to do any of the shopping. Well, sir, one day the group of us, who gathered in front of the General Store to swap yarns, got the surprise of our lives. Coming down the street we saw Mary Hogan, with a shopping basket on her arm. It would surprise you, too, if you knew Mary for the fifteen years she's been living in this town, and only saw her do shopping once before. Mary bought a lavish supply of food, some material for new dresses, a pair of shoes, and hose. We all wondered how she induced Lang to part with any money, knowing how stingy and miserly he was. Well, about a week later, one of the boys in the neighborhood came running to my office to tell me that Lang Hogan's shack was on fire. By the time we got there, however, the place was in ruins. We searched the ruins, but wc could find no trace of Hogan or his wife Mary. Naturally, we assumed that they had left for parts unknown.
