Zafket Ball During the 1926-1927 Basket Ball Season, Westport played nine games, winning four and losing five. We scored 154 points while our opponents were scoring 160. When the boys trounced the Faculty in the opening game, 19-8, they gave promise of being a real winning team. The following victory over Center High school, 25-20, offered further encouragement. However, when the Freshmen from East High took sn game in the last quarter, 21-17, our future did not seem so bright. In the league games we lost to Central twice by the some score, 19-13. To Northeast we lost two games, 36-12, and 16-13. By winning from West Side, 26-15, and again 16-G, we placed third in the League. Northeast placed first, Central second, and West Side fourth. Letters were awarded to Morton Barter, George Bresina, Arthur Givens, Paul Grinith, Fred Hopkins, Joe Snyder, George Stock and John Weir. The Central machine, heavy Wi- and fast as it was, was too much for the Westporters' best efforts, and a 12 to 0 score 'ji in Central's favor was the result. ' :' Northeast was the next encounter. For three quarters it looked as though nerve 1: would carry us through, but the Northeasters crossed the Westport goal line three ': times successfully, winning the game by a score of 19 to 0. West Side Junior High was next, and at times the game looked threatening-as though Westport might meet defeat at their hands. In the last period two passes ':,1 were completed for touchdowns, defeating West Side 14 to 0. 11:1 Again we met Central, and again the blue and red emerged with a clean record. 1: This game is memorable for the march down the field by Westport after the kick-off. I: ln the third quarter, however, the Central giants plunged through the Westport :. line until it was nearly wrecked. In the last quarter, with the score 12 to 7, Westport id' woke up. The ball was in dangerous territory for Central throughout the quarter, 8 and the gun sounded with a ten-yard pass over the Central goal line, which if com- :- pletcd would have been a 13 to 12 victory for Westport. The game was lost in the F race against time. 9 The last game of the season was West Side on the Gillham Held. It was the one 1: game above all that the team felt confident could be won easily. This, coupled with I: the fact that the team had undoubtedly been worn down by constantly meeting teams : of superior weight, accounted pretty largely for this 7 to 6 defeat. :, THE MEMBERS OF THE TEAM:-Laugeson, Glick, Elsberry, Mr. Laury-Coach, 1' Stock, Berry, Dunn, McCurdy, King, Wachter, Young, Griiiith, Foster, Bresina, Weir, Cochran, Roberts, Traub, Broylc, Hood, Hathaway. 1 lg!
