For this group pupils are selected alphabetically without reference to any classification, so that each unit may be representative of the entire school. I: The teacher is not, as a rule, related to the pupil through subject matter, but is :I in the relationship of sponsor and friend. These sponsors encourage pupils to come to I: them with their joys and successes as well as their troubles. They endeavor to keep :- in close touch with the home life of this group and to act as an adviser and guide I nt school. I: Each home room elects a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, usher, :Qi and council representative for the term. Various committees are appointed from time to time and the work is so organized that each pupil is given an opportunity and encouraged to act according to his abilities and preferences. Through the home room the school carries on its projects. Each group aspires to be first in all undertakings which promote the welfare of the school. Many of these activities are continuous throughout the year, as, for example, student patrol, Tuesday banking, scholarship and attendance contestsg others vary from month to month or week to week. The work is practical and inspirational. This year the home room activities have been Inore than interesting and profitable. At the beginning of the first term, after the first days of getting acquainted with one another and the rules of the school in the little green hand books, study schedules for home work were discussed and planned. Then came various campaigns for student athletics and publications. Such topics as thrift, courtesy, character building, develop- ment of personality, patriotism, respect for law and order, civic duties and privileges, charity, appreciation of art and nature, planning for future occupations have received careful consideration and enthusiastic support by the student body. Throughout all activities there is a fine spirit of co-operation, helpfulness, and loyalty. The spirit of the home room is truly the spirit of the school. -1-727.91-shv-:-1---2-f1EG'Pi-s:-:sg-5455-21'-7-wifi- 2 -T'-ai.:-rT'i'n ' ' 1-32 W , ----Li2'P'?:-'-' Page Fort V-,four SCl'l00l LIFE Q01 Refervef Cabinet 1926-1927 President .. .......... .,.,, ,,...,, ....,....,, . . . .. ,,,, ,,.,., . . . . Bobbie Lee Carter The Girl Reserves had a very happy beginning because Westport Junior brought home the Inter Club Shield in May 1926. There has been a large and active membership throughout the year. The Westport Junior Girl Reserves have done some line service work. At Christmas time they made a family of seven children happy giving them food, clothing, and toys. The Girl Reserves in the sewing department dressed a doll for the Japanese Doll Festival in Japan. In February we tied with Central Jr, at the mideyear Shield award. The central theme this year has been The Patchwork Quilt. Every meeting represented some patch in the quilt. At Christmas a beautiful star was added tn the quilt. At the health meeting n red flannel patch was added. The most interest- ing patch was the plaid patch of fun which was ndded by the Valentine party. We Br0aa'mJz'er The Broadcaster is Westport Junior-'s school paper. It was published in 1923, while the classes were still being held in Westport Senior High. The name is one selected in a contest and was suggested by Charles Sladek. The slogan, Free From Static, offered by Irwin L. Elwell, was chosen in 1924. Each year eight issues of the Broadcaster are published, at regular intervals, for the nominal sum of forty cents a year. Since the money collected for advertising pays nearly all of the pub- lishing cost, our advertisers help make our paper possible. The Broadcaster is a student project. The articles are now contributed by the English classes, the gym department, the office and the Girl Reserves. The English classes are responsible for the editorials, home room news, club news, personals, bone- hends, and such school news as assemblies, pep meetings, picture shows and plays. The office supplies the radiograms, the gym department the sporting news. This year Miss Emma Stegner is the faculty advisor. The stan' is as follows: Bill Barr, Walton Benn, Mary Margaret Carr, Bobbie Lee Carter, Martha Chapman, Lawrence Earhart, Amelia Fiedler, Walter Hatfield, Ruth McGnvren, Prudence Still- man, Robert Sutermeister and James Todd. --Margaret Carr, -v was-.-..v.'. Margaret Carr, Wilbur Dunn, Kenneth Holdren, Margaret Lieberman, Dick McDonald, Janus Olsen, Barbara Swan, Wayne Shadowen, and Bill Traub are on duty during the fourth hour. Those serving in the fifth hour are Neal Busby, Martha Chapman, Carl Danberg, John Vernon Joy, Carson King, Ruth Mc- Gavren, Wayne Rumsey, Lloyd Tuttle, Wayne Wright, and Dorothy Dean Yeatts. Six of the ushers left before the end of the year. Louis Laugesen, G. N. Lucker, Audry Ove, and Leon Storm were midyear students and left at the end of the first semester. William Fulkerson and Jack White, formerly ushers during the fifth hour, do not attend Westport Junior any longer. The Central machine, heavy Wi- and fast as it was, was too much for the Westporters' best efforts, and a 12 to 0 score 'ji in Central's favor was the result. ' :' Northeast was the next encounter. For three quarters it looked as though nerve 1: would carry us through, but the Northeasters crossed the Westport goal line three ': times successfully, winning the game by a score of 19 to 0. West Side Junior High was next, and at times the game looked threatening-as though Westport might meet defeat at their hands. In the last period two passes ':,1 were completed for touchdowns, defeating West Side 14 to 0. 11:1 Again we met Central, and again the blue and red emerged with a clean record. 1: This game is memorable for the march down the field by Westport after the kick-off. I: ln the third quarter, however, the Central giants plunged through the Westport :. line until it was nearly wrecked. In the last quarter, with the score 12 to 7, Westport id' woke up. The ball was in dangerous territory for Central throughout the quarter, 8 and the gun sounded with a ten-yard pass over the Central goal line, which if com- :- pletcd would have been a 13 to 12 victory for Westport. The game was lost in the F race against time. 9 The last game of the season was West Side on the Gillham Held. It was the one 1: game above all that the team felt confident could be won easily. This, coupled with I: the fact that the team had undoubtedly been worn down by constantly meeting teams : of superior weight, accounted pretty largely for this 7 to 6 defeat. :, THE MEMBERS OF THE TEAM:-Laugeson, Glick, Elsberry, Mr. Laury-Coach, 1' Stock, Berry, Dunn, McCurdy, King, Wachter, Young, Griiiith, Foster, Bresina, Weir, Cochran, Roberts, Traub, Broylc, Hood, Hathaway. 1 lg! We scored 154 points while our opponents were scoring 160. When the boys trounced the Faculty in the opening game, 19-8, they gave promise of being a real winning team. The following victory over Center High school, 25-20, offered further encouragement. However, when the Freshmen from East High took sn game in the last quarter, 21-17, our future did not seem so bright. In the league games we lost to Central twice by the some score, 19-13. To Northeast we lost two games, 36-12, and 16-13. By winning from West Side, 26-15, and again 16-G, we placed third in the League. Northeast placed first, Central second, and West Side fourth. He was secretive, shy and seemed to have a constant look of fear on his face. He was the sort of man who would keep looking back over his shoulder as he walked down the street. The coroner paused for a while as though going back into the reaches of his memory for more facts. He lived in a little shack at the edge of Bardstown, here, and would come to town about twice a month to buy what food, he and his wife needed. He would never trust Mary to do any of the shopping. Well, sir, one day the group of us, who gathered in front of the General Store to swap yarns, got the surprise of our lives. Coming down the street we saw Mary Hogan, with a shopping basket on her arm. It would surprise you, too, if you knew Mary for the fifteen years she's been living in this town, and only saw her do shopping once before. Mary bought a lavish supply of food, some material for new dresses, a pair of shoes, and hose. We all wondered how she induced Lang to part with any money, knowing how stingy and miserly he was. Well, about a week later, one of the boys in the neighborhood came running to my office to tell me that Lang Hogan's shack was on fire. By the time we got there, however, the place was in ruins. We searched the ruins, but wc could find no trace of Hogan or his wife Mary. Naturally, we assumed that they had left for parts unknown. In Charlestown I was .1 surprised to see Lang Hogan. He still had the same haunted look on his face, only 1' more so .' ' 'I Deciding to trail him, I found him living in an old shack near the railroad yard. R I peered through one of the windows, expecting to see his wife Mary, but she was V- nowhere to be seen. Acting more on suspicion than on evidence, I summoned my old friend Charley Murdock, the sheriff of Charlestown, and we went to question Lang. At first he wauldn't talk, but under pressure he would repeat over and over, :, 'Mary left me, Mary left me.' ' I hurried back to Bardstown, and quickly gathered a searching party. Still act- ing on my hunch, I had the boys dig into the ruins of the old Hogan house. In several hours we uncovered a skeleton with a fractured skull. Coroner Belnear paused, refilled and lit his pipe, and stared into space. Well, there isn't much more to tell. Lang, confronted with the body, broke down and con- fessed to the crime. He said he had killed her because she had located his money and spent some of it. Selind, the war maiden, had just returned from the battlefield. She was unutterably weary. Her winged horse Brun- hund had carried many warriors to Walhalla that day. Many times had Selind shouted her battle cry of, Yo ho, to ho She longed for the peace and quiet of the War Maidens palace Hex shining armor felt unbearably heavy, and her eyelids were heavy with weariness As Brunhund and Selind reached the War Maidens' palace, Selind leapt lightly from the horses back Dear old Brunhund, I love you, said Selind, as she patted he horses long white mane And now be gone. Brunhund rose slowly into the air. Selind watched him ily away, first a great white spot, and then finally nothing but a little speck, hardly visible. With a sigh she went into the palace, and to her wonderful suite of rooms. Selind had no sooner removed her armor than there was a knock at the door. When she opened it she found a sister war maiden. I'm sorry to interrupt you, Selind dear, she said, but Wotan commands you to come to him at once. Did he not tell you what he wished me for? asked Selind. No, he only said he wished to see you immediately, was the reply. Hastlly she dressed to go to Wotan. As she dressed many thoughts passed through her brain Why had Wotan summoned her? Was she to be punished as Brunhilde had been Had she done anything wrong? When she appeared before Wotan a few moments later, she was very beautiful. Since Brunhilde was no longer with them, Selind was the most beautiful war maiden in Walhalla And now she stood before Wotan, tall and straight. Her soft garments clung to her perfectly formed body. Her long titian hair was almost a garment in itself there was so much of it Clear violet eyes looked steadily at Wotan as she said, You sent for me, Father Yes, said Wotan in his deep though musical voice, I sent for you, Selind. Please seat yourself, for I have something of grave importance to tell you. Selind obeyed his request and seated herself on a luxurious divan near by. Wotan, she noticed, was troubled, and his one eye shifted uneasily. What is it, Father? she asked Be not afraid to tell me, for I will gladly obey your minutest wish. Ah Selind you are as good as you are beautiful, sighed Wotan. Then as with great eifoxt he proceeded Selind the fate of the gods lies in the palm of your hand. It is in your power to lead us to destruction or safety Selinds white brow clouded I am your servant, Father, and you are all-wise, bu I understand you not I shall explainj said Wotan If the gods are destroyed now, the deeds which they have hoped to do and which they should do, will never be accomplished. We are in no condition to iight Selind, for fighting now would mean ruin. The gnomes are ready at the slightest excuse to make war upon us. The giants would join the gnomes. Against them we have no chance He paused. But I Wotan, my king? interrupted Selind. The gnomes have demanded your hand in marriage for their king. Unless their request is obeyed they will proclaim war upon us. So you see, Selind, it is up to you. No, let me finish, my daughter as Selind made a slight movement as if to speak. If you consent to this sacrifice, Selind, it means you will never see Walhalla again. You must live under the earth until Walhalla is destroyed. It is a big sacrifice and you will never see us again Ah father, and one of Selinds white hands clutched convulsively at her throat. That one moan hurt Wotan more than if he had been struck. fContinued on page 951 11 . , N . . 1 u t 1 - u 11 - in u - 11 - - , . 11 1, u 11 - - - 11 - u - 1 1 a - 1 - 11 . , . t 11 u - 1 - 1 1 u - 1 , . u - ' 11 1 n ' ' . . ,, 41 11 - 1 -51:11.-.-.-wvweeafh.-f.-.-.-.5355-Q,-.-.---4.11.56W Page Ninety-tlivn L4-one-61-:n'-'ZncB'!.':?.uE- ?i'v ---'-'-'T ?i -.:i- ?U'-'-- Shana ite List Milk 8: Cream PRODUCED AND DISTRIBUTED BY l h HILL ROSE FA RM , PAUL MATTHEY, Proprietor i Phone, Overland 106 MERRIAM, KAN. Oh, I can't, I1can't, she moaned over and over, I can't, She paced to and fro. I Why should I suffer? Why should I be the one to pay? Never see Walhalla again? li Oh, it's unbearable. For hours she fought with herself. And then she remembered Wotan's words. ' She could destroy or save the gods. She could save them. She must save them. The gnomes were horrid but she was strong. She could stand them. She would marry I their king. if From sheer exhaustion she fell asleep. Q- At dawn she went to Wotan. I have decided, father. I'm going to marry 'I the gnome king. Clubs are organized to satisfy the desire of boys and girls for organized group activities leading to the development of personality and character. They serve to intensify an interest in something worth while and to aid in the formation of friendships based on worth-while interests. Boys and girls in their freer associations learn how to work together and how to use their time intelligently. The scope of the club work is determined by the extra-curriculum interests of the students and the ability to iind club sponsors among the faculty. Both sponsor and pupil are given freedom in selecting the particular club in which they wish to work. Pupils choose their own officers, make their own rules, arrange their own programs, and speak and act freely for the society. Westport Junior High School has forty-one clubs with a total membership of a thousand and eleven pupils. These clubs meet every two weeks on Friday afternoon. Much interesting and worth-while work has been done by the clubs of Westport Junior High School during the school year 1926-27. ' H ear!! I W m Mr. Anderson found himself in a very awkward situation. For three months there had been nothing to do, it seemed, but to pay bills. His wife Anne had run up enormous bills in most nf the downtown stores and he himself had found it necessary to run several credit bills. Consequently, he found himself in a very awkward situation. His wife was worried as much as he, but she showed no signs of it. Mr. Anderson was teller for a small bank in Mayorsville and received no large salary. At times the bank had large sums of cash on hand to meet the withdrawals of the many farmers near the town. As Mr. Anderson walked to work this morning, he thought of this but no dishonest thought entered his mind. What he really was thinking about was suicide. He arrived at the bank early and began rolling silver dollars into neat packets when a stranger entered. As Mr, Anderson was the only person in the bank the man walked up to his cage. Put up your hands, the man said quickly. Mr. Anderson thought quicklyg he had always wondered what he would do in a holdup, and had told himself he would give up the money. But now he thought altogether differ- ently. Here was, he thought, a good opportunity to be killed without any trouble. The bandit repeated his commands, but instead of complying Mr. Anderson raised one of the packets of silver dollars and hurled it against the temple of the bandit. As the bandit fell he cried out in pain. The police at the corner heard it and came hurrying in. That evening Mr. Anderson was in high spirits as he hurried home. The bandit he had captured was very dangerous and many rewards were oifered for him. All of which went to Mr. Anderson. -Phillip Lester. -'Q'-I-f-'-761'-'-'Z' -'- -T-'-'-'-vw:-'-'-'-'-'-'-' -1-235-T---r ---- --'-'-- - ------- 1.-,ff our rnmama simu- F.:-.-. - --. - A-1,-. - - - - .. - - - , - - - . - - .-.x J.. -. .-.-.-.-I--. . - 7.
