Westport High School is the oldest school in the Kansas City school district. The faculty and student body work coherently to prove the school's motto: TOGETHER WE CAN SUCCEED” TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION Page 3 ADMINISTRATION Page 6 SENIORS Page 22 UNDERCLASSMEN Page 39 ORGANIZATION ATHLETICS Page 65 3 Mr. Carl Hicks 1978-1985 Years of Service His Memory Lives On by Alecia Crichlow Some people live, and some people die, but have very little to show for journey. Others have touched the lives of other people in meaningful ways. Some people love and care and give of themselves more than others. Such an individual was Mr. Carl Hicks. As a teacher at Westport for seven years, Mr. Hicks played a major role in making Westport a better school. He was a person who believed in making things happen for Westport and its students. Mr. Hicks always showed concern for the students of Westport by persuading them to get involved in the school activities that were offered to them. He always said that he could not do it by himself, but that it would take the effort of both the teachers and the student to make this school a great place to come to each day. Mr. Hicks was not a prejudiced or partial man. He believed that each student attending Westport — no matter what race, religion, or creed — should have the opportunity to get a good education. He felt that a good education would afford each student the advantage of a good future. It is with sincere appreciation and admiration that we, the Westport Herald Staff, dedicate the 1985-1986 Yearbook to Mr. Carl Hicks memory for his great accomplishments. May Your Memory Live On!!! 4 WESTPORT STUDENTS DRAMATICALLY OBSERVE THE BIRTHDAY OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. Terry and l.atonya discuss the problems that their son is having in school ‘Arriuj Rosa Parks refuses to relinquish her seat on the bus. Supporters spread the news of the non-violent demonstration to be held in Memphis. Demonstrators protest against segregation laws. Apryl Mosely portrays Coretta Scott King FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL • • • MRS. KAREN SWIFT Dear Westport Students: I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to serve you and the Westport Community. With every year that passes, 1 become more closely tied to you, and more dedicated to working with you in making Westport the best school in the Greater Kansas City Area. Even through these tTying times, Westport continues to improve. It is you who make this possible by working hard under the direction of this capable staff. Remember, the educational opportunities that are yours at Westport are but only the means by which you prepare to accomplish bigger and better tasks in life. Take full advantage of your educational opportunities. Study, train and work hard to make your life a pleasurable, self-fulfilling, and profitable one. To you seniors, meet the dif- ficulties and challenges of life with the strength of your character and determination to succeed. Set a high stan- dard for the class behind you. Remember, love, peace and togetherness. Best Wishes, Karen A. Swift Principal 8 ADMINISTRATORS EXPRESS THEIR BELIEFS ON THE SUBJECT OF EDUCATION Educational Excellence is the opportunity to learn from your own, as well as other experiences. And while doing so, maintaining one's own individuality. One's goal in life should be to recognize his her own uniqueness and then to share its fruits with the rest of humanity. Dr. Carmen Chirveno Every student has a right to an education, however, the most important thing for students to remember is that each student has a responsibility to society to contribute in a positive manner by learning as much as possible while in school. This will help them to become a successful, contributing citizen. Mr. Franklin Walker I believe that students in high school should take full advantage of the opportunities given them to learn an occupation or to prepare themselves for some form of higher education. Also, they should learn how to live in a free society and to contribute to the continuation of that society. Learning the basics of the various subjects taught is an important part of this process.
