1984 HERALD Westport High School 315 East 39th Street Kansas City, Missouri 64111 Volume 80 Relationships Whether it's Ms. Hughes calling out a direction to the cheerleaders, (pic. 1); Mrs. Burtin giving directions during Col- lege Day, (pic. 2); Mr. Pond demonstrating a new dance step, (pic. 3); or Mrs. Stevenin helping with a fitting, (facing page); there is always a sense of direction that students receive from Westport teachers. Both teacher and student benefit from this type of relationship. Pic. 1 — Warren Paige, senior, and Ms. K. The ultimate goal, of course, is to prepare students for life after high school, whether that means more schooling, a job. marriage, or any number of other possibilities. Mrs. Swift's number one priority is the student and she would like students to know that she is on their side. 4 Administration Despite the vast number of problems inevitable in the ad- ministration of a high school, Mr. Walker and Mr. Ward are still encouraged by many aspects of their responsibilities. Providing a safe and positive environment conducive to educational achievement is one of their objectives. Vice-Principals Mr. Franklin Walker 6 Counselors The counseling staff spends many dedicated hours testing and advising students, arranging programs, and helping students to fill out forms. These are only a few of the responsibilities of a staff that is committed to students. Mrs. Gladys Burtin Mr. Michael Rowan 7 Office Workers C. Butler, Attendance J. Sickman, Registrar C. Ballantyne Business E. Authorlee English Westport students see the concerned teacher as the teacher who is willing to work closely with other teachers and with students to insure the suc- cess of the school. That kind of teacher is in evidence among the faculty at Westport. In addi- tion to teaching five classes each day, many teachers willingly sponsor clubs and organiza- tions or coach teams, which add to the number of hours that they devote to Westport and its students. 10 R. Davis Science Computers M. Edgerson M. The class of '84 was a class of hard-working, fun-loving students who excelled in academics, in athletics, and in artistic expressions. Also, there were many students who were content to work behind the scenes to make the efforts of others ap- pear more outstanding. The class of '84 leave behind memories that will not soon fade. Whether on the courts guiding the Tigers to victory, on the sidelines cheering the Tigers to victory, or in the stands screaming the Tigers to victory, you could be sure that members of the senior class were in the midst of all the action. Seniors were a part of every enthusiastic group of supporters at athletic events. 66 Seniors Warren Paige, center, and Tywanna Murphy, top center, helped cheer the Tigers to many victories. Others pictured are, from left, juniors Michelle Johnson, Gwen Bradford, Melissa Byrd, and Teresa Sherrille. Student Council Student Council, the voice of the student body, was an important element in the life of Westport students. This year's student council sponsored the races for Homecoming Queen and the Homecoming Dance. In addition to those two events, the student council was instrumental in providing movies for students' entertainment. Membership in the student council was made up of a representative and alternate from each fourth hour class plus officers elected by the stu- dent body Mrs. Randolph served as adviser to the student council. This survey is but one example. The survey included 9th, 10th, and 11th grade English students, plus one senior English class. We chose to involve as many students as possible, though by the end of several days of tabulating results, we conceded that perhaps we had involved two or three hundred too many. Still, in this survey, containing questions of interest to high school students, the work was completed. Some answers gave comic relief of sorts just when we felt that we could not look at another sheet. For those who wrote Lunch for favorite class, sorry, it did not compute. For the person who wrote My Mother for favorite singer, we needed her name. For the person who wrote Ronald Reagan for favorite movie star, thank you. Grace Thompson, Eunice Harris, and Sherilyn Graves were successful in their bids and became varsity, junior varsity, and freshman queen, respectively. This is as true at Westport as at any other school in the country. The number of hours of preparation that prom-goers consider a must would astound many. First, there is the selection of just the right escort. Then it's necessary to convince that escort that he selected you. Of course, discussing the proper attire with a best friend takes hours. Colors have to be properly coordinated with one's date. Then come the many hours of shopping, dashing from store to store to find that perfect outfit in just the right color and with just the right accessories. Finally, the big night arrives, the night which determines if all the work and anticipation has been worth it. For most, the answer is a resounding Yes! This year's prom was held Friday, May 11, 1984, at the Hilton Plaza Inn, amid an array of dazzling, show-stopping finery as each guest lived up to the Prom's theme, Putting on the Ritz. Ray Brenson and Natasha Young Seniors 97 Excellence in Education Three students at Westport helped to demonstrate that the educational picture as painted by the National Commission on Ex- cellence in Education is not quite so bleak. Luan Nguyen, class valedictorian, was one of several panelists chosen to respond to the commis- sion's report, Nation at Risk. The other panelists included Superintendent of Schools, Dr. John A. Minor, and City Councilman, Mark Bryant. Pierre Grandberry, after two grueling district- wide competitive events, won first place honors and selection as a member of the North team on the televised regional All Star Finals of Know Your Heritage ' an academic competition based on African-American history. The show, hosted by Levar Burton, was taped in Chicago, Illinois. Alecia Crichlow won first place in the Hyde Park Optimist Club's annual oratorical contest. Competing against 14 others, Alecia, in her win- ning speech, presented reasons and ways to work for the beautification of the city. Mr. Ballantyne's typing class, top photo, Mr. Langley's history class, middle photo, and Tamika Jackson, freshman, are all proof that students want to learn and that education is taking place. This is their contribution toward making the school a better place for all of us. The students chosen as helpers are students who are reliable, academically capable, and who have short programs. Student monitors are responsible for collecting attendance each hour and managing cafeteria traffic, among their many responsibilities. They also assist in the main office and in the counseling office do- ing such tasks as typing, filing, duplicating materials, etc. The services that these students provide are appreciated by everyone. 103 Anthony Payne, left, and Donald Combs A Salute to the Old West Mr. Hicks — Urban Cowboy Squaws Debbie and Marie Gonzales Traditionally, Homecoming Week is the time when students and faculty observe each day by dressing in a certain manner.
