Ever since Kansas City was known as Westport Landing, a trading post on the Missouri River, she has been noted for her spirit. Located in the middle of the coun- try, Kansas City is the Heart of America, pumping life into surrounding areas by serving as a great railroad center, the home for large industries, a transfer point for products en route to eastern cities. She has endured trials, and hardships, but this progressive town has survived boom, bust, flood, fire, and gang war. Since 1892 Westport High School has played an important part in the building of this metropolis. She is proud of her representatives in business, industry, and politics. Today, true representatives of Kan- sas Citians crowd her classrooms, fill her halls and treasure her diplomas. Perhaps nowhere could a more typical cross-section of Kansas City be found, for Westport stands in the midst of a wide circle of citi- zens who have varied jobs, political affilia- tions, anil ideals. -Iilll

Wlansas Cit pirit Yet do these typical teens realize the importance of the role they must play in shaping the Kansas City of tomorrow! In chemistry class, or at a club meeting, talk- ing to friends in the hall, or scrimmaging on the Gillham field, they present a pic- ture of American youth, hut who knows what is contained in the teen-age heart. A pride for his schools name in other fields as well as sports, a desire for bettering the town in which he lives, a sadness to leave the school that has played such a signifi- cant part in his life, but a determinedness to carry her name to great heights-do not these lurk behind the smiling mask of the apparently carefree youth? ln Kansas City's never-ending story of commercial, industrial and cultural prog- ress, Westport must play an important part.
