At first. Westport was a private school in the village of Westport. It w'-is forced to close at the time of the Civil War. but in 1885 was re-estab- lished as a public high school-the second public high school to be established in Missouri-and held classes in a room of Main School, later renamed Allen. ln 1892 a Westport High School building was erected on a site at 39th and Warwick. only to be burned down shortly afterwards. The school was rebuilt on the same sitc. The school population of Westport continued to grow and the pre-ent building was constructed in 1907. Six former Westporters hawc won Rhodes scholarships. No other high school in the United States has equaled this record. Westporters should be proud of their school.
