Historical Highlights of Westport High Sehoot . . , H12 name was derived from the former name of Kansas City which was Westport. The first building of XVestport High was the old George ll. l.ougan School. situated at 39th and XVarwiek lioulevard. ln the fall of the year WOR, on September 7th, the present build- ing of XYc-stport lligh School opened its doors for classes. lu that first year there were approximately 1500 boys and girls enrolled. lt was considered the finest school in the lfnited States, and people lrom all over the country came to see it. ln those early days the school was well known for its famous football and basketball teams. Its football team won victories for four consecutive years. During the XYorlcl XVar it did meritorious work by buying bonds, working' for the Red Cross, and adopting tlnnpany l of the 3rd regiment which later became a part of the 35th llivisiou. tlrer -WO of its graduates enlisted. eleven of whom died in active serviee. Klany notable persons. including Theoclore Roose- velt and Nicholas Murray Butler, have appearedfin its assemblies. Wlestport has always excelled in scholarship. From XYestport there have been six Rhodes Scholars. '
