The past 4 years of our life have been filled with memories of happiness, suffering, joy, and heartache. We have been mortified by the nuclear accident at Chernobyl and the explosion of the space shuttle in what soon would become a tragically historic flight, and recently relieved by the Ist successful launch since this harrowing accident. We have been devastated by our awareness of aids and starvation at its worst, yet elated at the success of the seemingly hopeless efforts in saving not only baby Jessica, but also the whales in the north from certain death. The | stock market crash humbled a surprised America into a short lived depression, while the celebration of the 200th anniversary of both the Constitution and our Town of Westport, along with the rebuilding of the Statue of Liberty, have given us reason to be proud. Who could soon forget our national ‘‘hero’’ Ollie North, and his dear Fawn Hall? What about the bombing of Libya that brought fear into the hearts of many as we seriously pondered the idea of an emerging world war. Reagan and peace talks would have been of little use to us then. What about fads and fashion — who or what inspired the trends that would affect us as teenagers? Was it Ollie’s military crew cut or rebellious Bosworth’s flat top that changed men’s hairstyles, re- sulting in the blue ‘‘50’’ etched in Paul Avilla’s head? Some people are just not influenced by anyone at all. Jeannine’s fiery red spiked mohawk was undoubtedly her own. Perms became the obsession, as did frosting and igh ientne — everyone wanted to be blond! Girls and guys alike resorted to mousse, gel, hairspray, spritz, and sitting in beauty salons for hours on end, smelling of burnt hair and per- manent solution. Yet all the hairspray in the world could not keep hair under control as hurricane Gloria swept into town. Waterfront houses were evac- uated and windows were boarded up. Though not as ferocious as her New England predecessors, she kept us out of school and left us stranded without water, heat, and electrici ty for days on end. Food spoiled as not even the refrigerators would run. However, William ‘‘the Refrigerator’ Perry did run (though his speed was not a factor) against the New England Patriots in the 1986 Super Bowl. He and the Chicago Bears froze the Patriots’ offense in their tracks, and soon squashed our long awaited hopes for a Super Bowl victory. Well, maybe next year! Thus we at WHS look forward to the future and challenges it brings, though memories of the past will always remain. Independence Harbor, located in Assonet, was soon filled with Westport decora- tors. The representative from Balloons Gallore showed up with the wrong air tanks, putting them behind. Others were preparing themselves at home. At 6:30 p.m. students began to arrive in limos. Pictures were taken for memories. Every young lady and gentleman looked so sophisti- cated in their attire. Chad Medeiros was an ex- ception as his tuxedo was left in Brett Alves’ brother’s car. He showed up at our prom wearin a suit. Candy Manchester was crowned Queen o the Junior Prom. Brett Alves and Glen Nunes were tied for King. We will not forget Mr. Menard dancing and our famous limbo dancer Ms. McDonald. Lori and Tim Nadine iN; - Sophomore Cookout fter another hard day of finals, on June 20th, 1987, the battle of the classes happened. Around 12 o’clock Mike Maccarone and Chris Gorman fired up the grill to feed the hungry athletes and spectators. During the game Chris Morin showed up with her new puppy. She was showing it off as it were a new car or something. For some time the spec- tators were admirin e puppy, but soon after their attention was back to the game. The game was finally over and the juniors were the winners with a score of 5-3. Soon they were all swarming around the food tables eating chips, watermelon, ham- burgers, hot dogs, and we even had linguica burgers for this occasion. Then out of the blue someone came up with the idea to go and play volleyball. Everyone headed toward the gym, except for the cooks and the advisors. They had to clean up the food and then they went down to the gym also. It was a relief from finals and a great way for the students to get together and have some fun. 19 Bi LIFE’S A BEACH ‘ , y ho’s got a nicer beach than West- port? The Senior Class answered this question on August 10, 1988. No one! We gathered at Westport High around 4:00 p.m. and formed a mile-long chain of cars down Rt. 88 and headed for Horseneck. First we took off toward the dunes for a group shot. However, ‘‘Ranger Rick’”’ didn’t like our idea. He heckled Mrs. Quesnel until she convinced him to let us carry on with our activity. Next we all hurri ed off to the shoreline. We then proceeded to splash around in the water while a Lorings photographer took candids. David Costa was playing lifeguard (upper right). While Billy Vacanti decided to take a rest in the waves (lower left). ER a mk oh A a SIE Dh RE NE RE ETN Ti IA SE a A as This turned out to be a day of fun in the sun. That is the impression outsiders might have gotten when they found out that the first day of school was August 30! Kids had to stop lifeguard- ing, beaching it, tanning, and swim- ming. The only highlight of the whole aspect of school was the fact that we were Seniors! We finally reached our peak. We knew that we had a year of responsi- bility, hard work, and enjoyment ahead of us. There were many events to look forward to, such as, the Snowball Dance, the Pep Rally, the Senior Prom, Class Day, and of course, Graduation! We knew that throughout the year, we had many goals to achieve, problems to face, and parties to attend. We were one game short of the State title but we had nothing to be ashamed of. It was the furthest any Westport Softball team had gone. We had an undefeated season until the last game. We won the South Section by beating Ashland but came up short in our final game against Amesbury. Our biggest turning point was beating Division 1’s Durfee. That game was really a big one for us. After Durfee’s defeat everyone seemed to know what we were capable of. Despite losing our last game, we were indeed proud of ourselves. The town was proud of us also. This was a great improvement over the last few years, especially losing to Norton only 7-4 instead of 24-0 (as in the past two years). ‘““Johnnyball’’ managed only to take in ten players; 5 seniors and 5 juniors leaving no one to cover any injury or fatigue factor which happened to every player at least once during the season. These in- juries included such things as the famous outfield collision between Tony and Paul and the disgusting skin tear off of Kevin Rioux’s hand when it was stepped on by Lord’s metal cleat. This injury was so bad you could actually see the bone. It was led by the ever patient Peter DeFusco. No matter how many times we lost he would always be there to tell us ‘‘We’ll win the next one. ’ We ran a lot but we always gave it our best. Then there’s John Miranda, our assistant coach. He’s the one who would tell us ‘‘Use the stats.’’ John would tell us how well the other team did, and that we could play against them, always confident that we would win. The team captains were Derek Audette and Gerry Ventura. They tried their hardest to rally the team together, when times were tough. They were always looked upon for the team's decisions. The two of them tried to set good examples, always displaying good sports- manship. They tried to keep a level head all the time. There were many things that made this season unique. One would be that we had one of the youngest teams in the league, with only five veterans on the roster. The rest being high school rookies. But despite this factor, we did pretty well. The second reason, it was unique was because we had a slow start. The week before school is when we started to practice. The team looked a little small, but it was a team. Once in school the recruitment started. It was looking rather gloomy when the first game was closing in on us and the Wildcats had no team. But thanks to the freshman class, we pulled out with enough. There were some exciting moments during the year. Probably the most exciting moment would have to be the time we were beating Diman Regional. When you have the lead on a team that has the ability to do circles around you, it’s kind of exciting. The coach would get all bent out of shape, but you knew in your mind that you were giving it your best. All in all the 1988-89 Wildcats displayed sportsmanship and en- durance, the best way they knew how. if TD te f jes — 2 ie . Rt cama a, a Co. Capt. The first walk was at the Newport Cliffwalk, where we saw some unusual sights. In the yards of one of the mansions there were cam- els! As the season progressed, Blue Hills was next on the list. We climbed to the top and stopped at the fort and looked over the moun- tains. Alas, the weekend trip came. We were all very excited and were looking forward to get- ting away from our parents for a while. We ate all our meals at Burger King or at McDonalds. Most of all, we couldn’t wait to climb the mountain. After the long bus ride to the White Mts., we were dropped off at the foot of the mountain. We climbed to the top and took many pictures. The landscape was beautiful. For a moment it was like we were taken away from reality and given a taste of heaven. We then made our way down the mountain and waited for the bus to arrive. We went fora bite to eat then headed for the hotel where the fun began. Some of us went swimming, some went to the sauna, and the rest of us just sat around and talked. Later on, on our floor, we all piled in some of the rooms. We all had to be in our own rooms by 11:00 p.m. and lights went out by 12:00 a.m. The next morning we all wanted it to rain so the mountain would be too slippery to climb. We had no luck, we got up and got ready to climb. In the end, it was worth it because the view was even more gorgeous. We made our way down the mountain, hopped on the bus and headed for home. We were a bit disappointed that our weekend was over. Our parents were waiting for us when we arrived. We all said good night and headed our own ways home. As we started the season, there were many new faces. We were individuals with our own personalities, ideas, and goals. But we would soon become friends, regardless of Freshman-Senior ster- eotypes. The ‘“‘Senior, Junior, Sophomore, Fresh- man’ routine existed on the bus, but it was merely a handed-down tradition (and a way to keep Peixe and Stephanie from getting to the food first — we had to eat too!) As we reflect upon our season there were many highlights and events which come to mind (like our infamous pre-game, get-psyched cheer, kick butt, and score!) What about the hard fought Durfee game where we the “‘lowly’’ Wildcats walked away froma team we had never before beaten, victorious, with a 1-0 score! And don't forget being the only team in our league to beat our “rival’’ West Bridgewater, proudly knocking the ‘‘undefeated’’ from their championship banner. Didn’t that feel good! And how about that rainy, miserable Fairhaven game, where we played our hearts out and were almost stripped of our deserved 3-2 win. (Good thing for Miss Silvia’s big mouth! And Mr. Roy's too!) Then there was the long awaited State Tournament and all its excitement as we were again paired with Harwich (after losing to them last year in states by a score of only 1-0). Well, history seemed to repeat itself, and despite our well-played games, we again lost by the same heartbreaking score, as Harwich franticly put in a last minute goal. Probably the most memorable occasion, es- pecially for the Seniors, was the bus ride home from our last away game. As we climbed aboard the bus after a successful Holbrook game, we were ‘‘surprised’’ to see the amount of trouble the underclassmen had gone to in decorating the bus with balloons, signs, streamers, and roses, as a farewell and appreciation to the favorite 8 Seniors. It was a touching moment, as each and every Senior had tears in their eyes as they re- flected upon the past and looked toward the fu- ture. We were all close that night, the best of friends, as Senior balloons and signs were passed around the bus for every one to sign. Little did we know that this would be one of our last times with Jodi. We Sew even closer through this tragedy, and pulled together, ded- icating the remainder of our season to Jodi and winning the last 4 games for our friend. The season was a memorable one for this bunch and we wouldn't have missed it for the world. 41 Dig WH! he Westport team has always been an outstanding team in their league (just about the best). But this year the League Championship banner went to South- eastern. Westport lost to them at the begin- ning of the season but when the second match came around the Wildcats were totally de- termined to win and they did. But due to extra losses the lady Wildcats couldn't catch South- eastern. They did however, reach the State Tournament. The first game against Fairhaven was a very psychological game. Both were highly capable teams but it de- pended on nerves and mental ‘‘toughness.”’ Losing the 1st game, Westport came back and won the second. But ‘‘lady luck”’ left them and went to Fairhaven for the next two games and beat Westport 3 games to one for the match. This loss ended their season with a 14-5 rec- ord. Front: K. LaPlante, A. Heather Boan was in charge of the funda- mentals backstage. And Jen Raposa took on ticket sales and refreshments. The biggest prize of all, a cash award of $50.00 was awarded to Bill McQuoid for his performance on the piano to ‘‘The Summer of 69.”’ Even though only some people came out on top, the judges admit that it was a tough de- cision overall. Gaud aud CHORUS AND BAND TRIPLE IN SIZE In recent years the school band has suffered low numbers and low morale. Just 2 years ago there were only 13 members. The number has increased to 30 members last year and boosted to 45. The increase in participation came, in part, because of the introduction of electric instruments (guitars, keyboards, bass), and a new approach to our high school band. Mr. Peter Davis has made many changes in the school band and has sparked a great interest in it, not only at the high school, but he has been working with future high school students. The students now find that they get to play modern music as well as a variety of other styles of music. This year the band has played at many events such as the Westport.Country Fair, at the Christmas Jubilee, and the Spring Concert, Parents Night and marched in both major parades here in town. We hope that future school departments budgets will allow this program to expand. The Westport High School Chorus has increased from last year 6 members to approximately 30 members this year. This year we were able to hold the Christmas concert at the High School rather than at the middle school. We also performed at the Art Guild for Christmas. In the spring we put on the musical Pirates of Penzance. We were joined by Middle school and Elementary students. With the increasing size of the Middle School chorus the number in the High School should stay large. It’s great to see so many students taking part in this program. 53 Oops! Were our faces ved! On Dec. 21, 1988, the Senior Class made an imprint in Pep Rally History. It started out with Deck the Halls. The Seniors took a step out of time by decorating the main lobby in 1950’s, 70’s, and future decor. By placing 2nd, our creativity showed the true school spirit through the years. It is com- mon at WHS that the Seniors place lst in everything at the rally. Well, this year we decided to be original. We placed 3rd in most events and 3rd over all. Such meals have been Chinese, Italian, and Greek. Bi-monthly, the thirteen stu- dents broke into groups and pre- pared a buffet that was then ordered by the staff of the high school. Our hope had been to further our direc- tion with new additional cuisines. However, an unfortunate mishap oc- curred which caused severe prob- lems. A fire, which destroyed eve- rything, left us with no supplies at all. We were then forced to use a few LETTE different approaches to consume the time until new supplies and a room could be made available. During this time, we all made maple cutting boards, wooden spoons, and signs to be used at our future residency. When a room became available, plans were made to purchase two microwaves and new cooking uten- sils. For the remainder of the year, the class still prepared and served buffets of international origin, while learning techniques in the utiliza- tion of regular and convection mi- crowave cooking. What this means is a different way of running all aspects of the school. The 88-89 school year was used asa planning year and what a year it was. One of the first things that was done was the rewriting of the constitution. Also a group of teachers and students got together and designed a new way of teaching day courses. Most of the things Carnegie has done are for the good of the school, but stu- dents think of the things wrong with Carnegie is the new seating arrange- ment in the auditorium. What really made this program work was that the students could get in- volved with the way they wan ted their school and classes run. “a %, Mrs. Barros — Math Mr. Burke — Eng. The students are given opportunities to work with charcoal, water color, and pastels. Some projects go over well, while some others are extremely rusting for the student. The Basketball season started out slowly, but on a winning note. The team was made up mostly of seniors, nine to be exact, and we wanted it to be the best, because it was our last season together. We won our next few games, then we lost two games. Then we were hit by a teachers’ strike. That put a stop to our season for almost a month. We didn’t prac- tice or play for two weeks because we didn’t have a gym and it was too cold to play outside. When we did start our season games again it was like starting our season over, but we still went on winning. We did well winning 13 straight games in only 17 days. Then we got to the playoffs and the State Tournament. We won the first round of the states and even the second, but then came our heart breaker. We lost our last game to Norwell by 6 points. That ended our chance to win the State tour- nament and it also ended our last season together. It was indeed a season to end all our seasons. Kim Rego at CTO wa? Fee. Capts. Most of the class assumed that others were working on the yearbook and attend- ing afternoon and evening meetings. But practically no one was. The mir- acle of publication is due primarily to Kris Pacheco. She organized, pho- tographed, developed film, did lay- outs and kept the few of us who were around in line. Many thanks also are due to Bruce Gifford for his excellent photography and nicely designed lay-outs. The rest of the book was complet- ed by anyone who showed up. Wendy and Alyson covered sports, Heather and Erin covered the un- derclassmen. Andrea did a great job whenever she could, either writing or designing. Fortunately by March the class was getting the message that there wouldn’t be a yearbook without a staff, and some willing typists showed up with Donna Pe- trasso, and Mary Manchester, taking care of all copy. Others helped here and there and we finally miraculous- ly finished. Our cover and graffiti was all designed by senior John Chace and by the appearance of his work, an art career is in the making. Name: Jeannine THE WIZARD OF LOVE Once upon a time there was a little red-haired girl named Jee-neen. She was a happy girl, but some- thing was missing from her life... a lovey. Jee-neen went to the munchkin people and asked if they could help her. A dark-skinned munchkin with a salt and pepper beard, and a very husky voice suggested that she ask the Good Witch of Westport, Diane, for help. Jee-neen sane it was a great idea and asked how to find the good Witch. Three children munchkins, one with flaming red hair, said they would help her. They joined hands, and shut their eyes and called out the name Diane three times. Suddenly with a flash of blinding light the Good Witch appeared. Jee-neen told the Good Witch her situation, and the Good Witch said she could help. The solution was that Jee-neen had to journey through four years at Westport High, and at the end of the journey she would find the Wizard of Love, and he could help her. Follow the brown-bricked road the Good Witch said, follow the brown-bricked road. And in a flash she disappeared. Jee-neen did as she was told, and along the way she met a Scarecrow named Eileen. Eileen was a super genius, but knew nothing of the Wizard of Love. She was very curious, and asked if she could accompany Jee-neen. Jee-neen agreed, and off they went. Soon the two friends came upon a Tin Geek who couldn't move because pen omnis were rusted. They oiled the Tin Geek and asked her if she wanted to join them. The two friends explained that they were try- ing to reach the Wizard of Love, and the Tin Geek accepted with glee. The Tin Geek's name was Holly and she had a great love for whales, but had never seen one because she had been rusted for a long time. So off the three friends went, on to find a Lovey, one to satisfy her curiosity, and one to meet a whale. Half way through the journey ee came upon a cowardly lion named Aimee. Aimee loved the weird and supernatural, but was afraid to explore it. The three friends told her about the Wizard of Love and why they were going to see him. Aimee thought the Wizard of Love sounded weird so she joined them. Throughout the journey the four companions made many friends. Whether they were trendy, flower chil- dren, teenage labotomies, or the next generation of world leaders they were all nice, and fun to be around. There were also many evil people who tried to interfere with the journey. These people were called Dirtbags and Bimbos. But they were no match for the travelers. The four friends used their college prep skills, and banished the evil ones into the pit of Ignorance and Hard Labor. Before they knew it the journey was over. It was the year 1989, and they only had a few more steps to go. They were walking through the Emerald Auditorium doors to the stage where the Wizard of Love sat on his magnificent throne. The Wizard's nam e was David, and he smiled at Jee-neen as their eyes met. Jee- neen had found her Lovey. Bia ead $ £ . Fi % DEBBIE LEVESQUE GERRY VENTURA i. Without her ideas, patience, and especially her TIME, the Class of ‘‘89°’ wouldn’t be what it is today. We will never forget all the things she did for us, because she cared.
