It’s a town we know quite well with scenes of lobsters on wharfs, the fishing boats, the sea and the cows going out for a drink. They're all a part of our lives. Most of all its where we spent four years at Westport High School. SENIORS AT WORK . . . Our Senior Year commenced with a successful car wash held at Westport High School. We washed over one hundred cars, but our favorite car was the little white corvette. However, we not only washed cars buf most of us even got a free wash. Also, at this event, raffle tickets were sold for a cabbage patch doll named Lialee. What ARE you doing? See Oops, missed a spot! This is my purpose in life! The Cabbage Patch Family. Jon Mongie Steven Farias Westport High School's first debating society was established in October, 1983. It had the good fortune to be lifted to an unexpected degree of popularity, resulting in a club able to compete successfully, with a broad range of students. In the first season, May of 1984, Westport swept every category in the state tournament at Rhode Island College, leaving with first place honors. This year was inaugurated with trips to national competitions at Harvard University, Rhode Island College, and North Adams College. The club looks forward, optimistically, to many continued seasons of rewarding success. At this point we would like to express our gratitude to our coach, Reverend Dr. Robert J. Penberthy, who devoted many long hours of prac- tice and encouragement. Without him the fruition of his and our labors could never have been realized. Among its members are class officers and representatives, as well as the Student Advisory to the School Committee, State Representatives and the Government Day Student Delegates The Student Advisory attends bimonthly School Commitree meetings to pre- sent new ideas for bettering our school. The most popular items this year were the question of a football ream and tennis courts built on the school grounds State Representatives gather in Lakeville once a month for their area meeting and workshop. Coutinho The Westport High School International Student Exchange Club is a perfect example of the words, ‘the key to world peace begins with the young.” Founded only five years ago, the club grows in size each year. Students travel to Milton Keynes, England and Okinawa, Japan to live and study for a month, and Westport High welcomes travelers from Stantonbury Campus and Futenma High School every spring, as well. This year, France, Australia and Pennsylvania will be added to the program. These trips are educational, as well as recreational, because students live in an English or Japanese home, and at- tend the local high school. They experience the culture of a foreign country, rather than simply “seeing the sights’ as they might on a tour or a regular vacation. Friendships and family ties are made; there is a strong bond among Westport, Milton Keynes and Okinawa. The Exchange Club is a first rate way to meet people and make new friends (even if you don't travel to a foreign country). Each spring, Westport welcomes a group of student visitors from England and Okinawa. Those who don’t have a chance fo travel get the chance to ‘host’ a foreign student. Without taking a step out of Westport, the host student and his family learn about a foreign culture, perhaps a foreign language and in the process make a life-long friend and pen pal.
