What does it mean to me? It means my hometown — the place where | grew up. The beach — where | spent the endless hours, day and night, summer and winter. The cows grazing leisurely in the pastures. The fishing boats docked at the point, the lobster pots stacked on the wharf. It's the early morning mist rising off the river, the sun going down over the harbour. We, the class of 1984, thank you for all your help and guidance throughout our years at Westport High. We all want you to know that we appreciate your concern for us even when we didn’t seem to care, and that these years wouldn't have been the same without you! 33 Class FRESHMAN YEAR The history of the class of 1984 begins on Wednesday,September 3, 1980. As freshman the prospect of being in high school intrigued us. Upon our second day of school we encountered the demigods (upperclassman) with their conde- scending personalities. We now realized the full meaning of what being a freshman is all about. Freshman year, we sold magazines, candy hearts, candy, towels and were involved in the spring carnival. As freshman, we were aware of many things going on around us. In December of 1980, we suffered a great loss with the death of John Lennon. Along with the new year, we welcomed in a new president. Just minutes after President Reagan's inauguration, 52 American hostages were freed from Iran. In late March, John Hinckley attempted to assasinate the president. A few months later Mehmet Ali Agca attempted to assasinate the Pope. Both attempts were futile. Also in 1981, the first reusable space shuttle Columbia, was launched from Cape Kennedy in Florida SOPHOMORE YEAR As sophomores, we were now developing less subserviant personalities. To begin the year we held a car wash, then proceeded to sell candy and ornaments and carnations for St. Patrick’s day. We also held the rock-a-thon. We again were involved in the Spring Carnival this time by selling quaahogs. We ended the year the same way we began by holding another car wash. In the world around us Leonid Brezhnev, ruler of the Soviet Union, passed away to be succeeded by Yuri Andropov. We saw many nuclear disarmorment rallies not only in the United States but abroad as well. President Reagan appointed Sandra O'Connor as the first woman to the United States Supreme Court. History JUNIOR YEAR In our Junior Year, we had finally reached the level of demigod. For fund raisers, we held a rumage saleand sold ornaments. We held a dance in the gym and sold candy; magazines and posters. To get our yearbook.off on the right foot,we sold yearbook ads. As most Junior Classes do, we held a Junior Prom at the Coachman Restaurant. We also par- ticipated in the Spring Carnival. New York City celebrated the 100th birthday of the Brooklyn Bridge. The United States sent it’s first woman astronaut, Sally Ride, into space. An artificial heart was implanted into the first human as a permanent life support aid. SENIOR YEAR As our final year progressed, we went right to work on our yearbook. We sold posters, candy, and sun catchers. We also got ready for our Prom and a long awaited graduation day. Many things have happened in the world over the past year. The Australians won the America’s cup race. The Korean jet liner O07 was shot down over the Soviet Union. In February of 1984 Yuri Andropor, leader of the Soviet Union, passed away. America lost over 200 Marines in Beirut. The world looks.forward to the XIV Winter Olympic games held in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia and the Summer Olympic games held in Los Angeles, California. us N . Karen Gardzina and Carrie Wilkins Trish Alves Jon Mongie Kerry DeJesus Shara Y., Sie e Cheryl F's Leg The past four years will always be remembered and treasured by each one of us. Upon entering Westport High school, we were filled with emotions ranging from anxiety to excitement. As freshmen, we knew we'd be at the bottom, but the prospect of being in HIGH school enchanted us. When we became sopho- mores, the awe of high school diminished, and it was replaced by confidence both in ourselves and in our surroundings. As juniors, we finally became ‘“‘upper- classmen’’! As upperclassmen, we began to realize the importance of our edu- cation and began to gather information on future career goals. Finally — SEN- 1OR YEAR!! As we approach graduation, our excitement about the future grows, and we reminisce on past experiences. We hope that our successors will have four great years at Westport high. We sure did!
