This is the administration. At West- port High, matters are ably handled by Superintendent James Francis, Principal Edmie Bibeau and Vice Principal Charles Menard. These dedi- cated men have been directly responsible for many improve- ments concerning student life in WHS. Theiraccomplishments include a snack bar, a student lounge, and a more powerful student government. As in any institution, this body is often the topic of much criticism. Both Mr. Bibeau and Mr. Men- ard are striving to keep dis- agreements and misunder- standings to a minimum by en- couraging open-mindedness and good communications among students, administration, and faculty. Though the Villagers had their troubles at the be- ginning of the season, they came back victoriously, trampling over their last four challengers to capture third place in a very competitive league of eleven teams. Six starting seniors, newly appointed assistant coach, Bill Fen- ney, and Mr. Souza's 18 years of coaching experience were important factors responsible for this year's success. Despite the return of a few veterans, Coach Joan Carpenter, built a rookie team that placed third in the Central Division of the South- eastern Mass. Conference - Division Il. The highlight of the season was the game against Bishop Stang; West- port was the only team to score against them and then gave them their only defeat. The only reason why we didn't take first place is due to our lack of experience. We are graduating 2 sen- iors: co-captains Cindy Raposa and Cindy Vieira. Many of the members tutor students having trouble with their studies or help with the students with special needs at the Macom- ber School. The help of these vol- unteers is beneficial to and ap- preciated by all. This year, new power was given to Student Council by the administration. Thus, the Coun- cil has played a more active and important role in WHS than in previous years. The Council now has the power to set up Activity Periods and to grant or to prohibit meetings of classes and clubs. The decision to let the Freshmen Class have study in the student lounge and the appointing of student monitors to patrol the halls during Activity Periods were done by this year's Student Council. We hope that next year's members of the Council are as responsible 106 as their predecessors have been, The closest that WHS has to a library science course is the Media Center Aide program. The students in this program are volunteers who enjoy working with audio-visual and printed materials. Media Center Aides shelve books, as well as man the sign-out desk, They make the Media Center a much more organized place to work. The services of the Office Aides are invaluable. The extra help frees the secretaries and enables them to do the more important work around the Main Office. The Aides are, at the same time, getting valuable of- fice practice. The program is an excellent one and it is beneficial to everyone concerned, The Student Representatives were elected to voice the opinions of WHS students to the school committee, They are the students responsible for bringing student complaints up for discussion at committee meetings. The opinions voiced by these people are considered by the members of the committee before voting on any high school issue. 107 The Future Teachers got off to a slow start this year. The tutor- ing program which was begun last year was continued this year, The selling of carnations raised money which supplies the funds for a FTA scholarship. This year's FTA of- ficers are president Debbie Smusz, vice president Cindy Vieira, trea- surer Debbie Smeaton, and secre- tary-librarian Pam Thibaut. The WHS disc jockeys are re- “TALL sponsible for the piped-in music in brea S the study hall. Mr. Hickey got per- Ling mission for the mock radio station and the students did the rest. The radio shows are taped and then played back during the day in the cafeteria, The taping of these shows is hard work and time con- suming; the students of WHS owe much to these disc jockeys who volunteer their time for the stu- dents’ listening pleasure.
