Mrs. Guay has shown a number of films which have given the students a greater understanding of nursing. Some of the senior girls have applied to nursing schools and we hope that the F.N.A. will inspire more girls to do so in the future. Miss Mary E. Silva is doing an outstanding job as the new advisor for the Westport High’s Future Teachers of America (FTA). This year the officers are: president — Clara Andrade (senior), vice-president — Debbie Smusz (junior), secretary-treasurer — Cindy Vieira (junior), and librarian — Sue Dupre (senior). The future teachers have sold carnations on both Valentines Day and St. Patricks Day as they usually do. This year an extra curriculum has been added. They now have an opportunity to serve as a teachers aide. During their free periods, any future teacher that desires to teach may go to the Macomber, Earle or Middle School, to help, whether it be to correct papers or to help an individual child. FUTURE NURSES UTURE TEACHERS race! After being thrown in the sink, the Aggie students think twice about sticking with the course!!! Yet most of them do and continue their studies with a summer project. All of the members of the F.F.A. will agree that it is a “far out’’ course and will urge anyone interested in agriculture to look into it. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Student representatives were elected to attend meetings of the school committee. They voice their opinions on matters concerning the high school, such as drug abuse programs and what time school should start. They also present any problems of the students in school to the school committee and discuss them. The school committee members then listen to the representatives before making any final decisions. The Student Council is composed of two members from each class and is principally designed to regulate and organize the activities of the student body. The Council is also the outlet to the administration on student feelings concerning issues that the students feel are important. The Superintendent’s Advisory Team, more commonly know n as the SAT, meets regularly with Mr. Clarke. The members are chosen at random to discuss ways to improve the school. The SAT team oftens works in accordance with the Student Council. The team has been quite successful as they have planned the new lunch menus, the Jr-Sr. lounge, the snack bar, and are presently discussing a drug program. The president is Alan Costa and the secretary is Debbi Manchester. 34 i Ga SENIOR DANCE For the first time in four years, the senior class was able to plan and organize a school dance. Thanks to the trust and co-operation that Mr. Melli gave, the members of the dance committee were able to stage a very profitable, successful and enjoyable evening. ; “oats $5 SNACK BAR Our new snack bar program has been a definite success. The students are offered breakfast foods in the morning along with potato chips, brownies, peanuts, nabs, and other goodies to satisfy their munchies. The snack bar also serves a dual purpose. Students are hired to sell the goods every period and are paid well. Right On! W.H.S. is fighting the unemployment problem. q — ee sly’ ACTIVITY CLUB Fa LGle HRROLCT GEN? BOWLING This club was organized by Mr. Melli to provide enjoyable and meaningful activities for any interested individual of the student body. The concept has met with much success and the club continues to expand as more activities are added. Due to unwarranted actions taken by the administration, this year’s Honor Society members were prevented from fully enjoying their privileges. After much hard work by Elaine McLaughlin and members of H.S., these deserving rights were once again renewed. Members of H.S., during free periods, render themselves to students who are having difficulties in certain subjects by tutoring them. The Citizen’s Band Radio Club is composed of members who share a Common interest in electronics and radio communication. Each member owns or has access to a Citizen’s Band radio and regularly converses with others. The opportunity to gain practical office experience Is available to any junior and senior girl who offers her assistance one period each day. Compensation in the form of 1% credits per semester is allocated in return for their aid 41 e a3 . 3 e - - - e SOCCER Fr. D. Pineau, M. Petty, B. Alves, J. Gifford, R. Smith (Capt.), S. Andras, L. Cahoon, Coach Frank Souza we th ee ‘oe The 1973 Soccer season was hindered by the loss of twelve seniors and a lack of experience. This was the worst season Westport has ever witnessed in soccer. With two returnees, Mike St. Martin and Bob Smith, Coach Souza had to concentrate on a rebuilding year. Freshmen that never start for Coach Souza did this year. With much hard work and a lot of practice, the team had a fair season placing 4th. The team was still able to contribute two players to the All Star Team; they were Bob Smith and Mike St. Martin. The highlights of the season were the defeating of Holy Family, New Bedford Voke, and Durfee, and tieing New Bedford, Durfee and Connolly. The game that will never leave anyone’s mind was against New Bedford High. Two years ago New Bedford was number one in the league. A win for Westport was unforeseen but high spirited West- port team gave it all they had and somehow got a 0-0 tie. oR FELD I @GREy f.r. S. Santos, J. Lee, D. Souza, D. Souza, V. Pietrzyk, M. Despite the small turnout of veterans, and an inadequate playing field, Coach Joan Carpenter was faced with the job of building a rookie team. Overlooking these and other obstacles, the girls pulled through and finished the season in fourth place with a 3-1-4 win-tie-loss record. CROSS COUNTRY tL i] f.r. R. Fontaine, A. Costa, D. Holden, L. Coach John Mello organized a well balanced team of hard workers and non-quitters. The most exciting meets this year were the ones against Old Rochester and Norton. The guys joined together and pulled out two big victories. Senior tri-captains Alan Costa, Richard Fontaine and David Holden provided the leadership to help Mr. Mello put together a successful team. 48 Richard F i Holden Alan Costa BASKETBALL Rebuilding was the name of the game this year as Coach John Mello’s Villagers were minus six graduating seniors. Paced by starters Bob Smith, Kenny Greenwood, Gus Cariglia, Ronnie Rego, and Mike St. Martin, Westport wound up with a 6-14 win-loss record. The highlight of the season was the defeat of New Bedford Voke, which ultimately knocked them out of tournament play. They also gained post season wins against St. Mary’s and St. Anthony’s in the Bay State Tournament, before being nosed out by Roxbury in the semi-final contest. f.r. D. Twark, G. Leach. 2nd r. F. Sparked by senior tri-captains Paula Pannoni, Debbie Souza and Donna Souza, the girls fought their way to third place behind co-champions Stang and New Bedford. ite Higa) ARI Leading this year’s girls’ vol- leyball team are tri-captains De- bbie Johansen, Donna Souza and Debbie Souza. Ending last year’s season in second place, Coach Joan Carpenter hopes to take this year’s team to first place. The officers are president, Debbi Manchester; vice-president, Kathy Gracia; secretary, Sue Emond; and treasurer, Dianne Zuber. Activities such as a paper drive, the selling of candy bars, and a ham and bean supper all helped to build the treasury. Without the help of advisor Frank Souza, and the participation of the students in the class, none of these activities could have taken place.
