Furthermore, we hope that you will gain as much satisfaction from reading our ““Brownie’’ as we have had in compiling it. The following officers were elected to guide us through our first year at Westport High School: President, Nina Carlson; Vice-President, Carol Feijo; Secretary, Judith Nunes; Treasurer, Joan Wood. Ruth Couto and Louis Nanni represented us on the Student Council. The Seniors treated us to three days of initiation ending with the “Welcome Fresh- men” dance. Our first successful dance, “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling,” was held in March. We also had a cake sale on January 28, 1961, at the BPM Super Market in Dartmouth. To climax our Freshman year, we held our outing at Miles Standish Reservation. As we began our Sophomore year, in September 1961, we looked to the coming year with enthusiasm. Chosen to lead us through our second year of high school were the following officers: President, Carolyn Boudria; Vice-President, Anthony Rogers; Secretary, Judith Nunes; Treasurer, Sharon Miller. Rebecca Tripp and Antone Vieira were elected to the Student Council. Mr. Slowe was chosen as our class advisor. We had a cake sale in September at the BPM Super Market and also sold candy bars during that year. All of us donated toys that were distributed by the Red Cross to needy children for Christmas gifts. We held our second dance, “Young at Heart,” in February. Our Sophomore year came to a close with the annual outing, which was held again at Miles Standish Reservation. In September of 1962, as Juniors, we were ready for a busy year. Elected to guide us through this very important year were President, Anthony Rogets; Vice-President, Charles Amann; Secretary, Judith Nunes; Treasurer, Geoffrey Oliver. Carolyn Boudria and Louis Nanni were elected as our Student Council Repre- sentatives. In October, we were fitted for our class rings, which finally arrived in December. Junior fingers were flashing throughout the Christmas vacation. We also held a Christmas dance, “White Paradise.” Later in the year we sold pens and candy bars. Many of our classmates were in the Junior-Senior play, ‘““Tomor- row’s Heaven.” The highlight of our Junior year was our Prom, ‘‘Blue Hawaii,” held in April. Many of us can still remember how beautifully our auditorium was decorated and how lovely our queen, Caro- lyn Boudria, looked. The year came to an end with a farewell senior dance, ‘““Au Revoir.’’ Our outing was held at Nausett Beach, Cape Cod. In the fall of 1963, we as Seniors, began our last year at Westport High. Chosen to lead us through our final year were President, Geoffrey Oliver; Vice-President, Charles Amann; Secretary, Judith Nunes; Treasurer, Judith Perry. Carolyn Boudria and Louis Nanni were chosen as our Student Council Representa- tives. Mary Wood and Antone Vieira were chosen Student Council Representatives at large. A successful cake sale was held in September at Lee’s Supermarket in Westport. We greeted the Freshmen with a fun- filled day of initiation, followed by a ‘Welcome Freshmen” dance. Our class sponsored a Christmas dance, which was enjoyed by all. Our Senior year was brought to a grande finale by our Senior Prom, held on May 22. Now that our high school days are over, we are looking forward to what lies ahead. We shall never forget our many friendships we have gained or the teachers who have helped us so much. The pleasant memories of our Alma Mater, Westport High School, will be with us always. MR. THOMAS W. SLOWE Dedication We, the class of 1964, proudly dedicate our yearbook, the ‘Brownie,’ to our class advisor, Mr. Thomas Slowe, in sincere appreciation for the guid- ance he has given us in the past four years. MR. HAROLD S. WOOD Jn Honor We wish to publicly express our appreciation for our Principal, Mr. Harold S. Wood, for the kindness and patience he has shown us, both as individuals and as a class. This yearbook would not have been possible without his sympathetic coopera- tion. CLASS FLOWER Red Rose CLASS POEM “To Our Beloved Westport”’ Now we must leave your gates, Now tread our singular fates. Yet with a sigh we turn, Yet we have much to learn. Who now will be our guide, Who soothe our stubborn pride? We are but babes in arms, We know not life’s alarms. Yes, learn them all we shall, Yes, you have taught us well. So into life we'll stalk, So straight and tall we'll walk! Long may your colors light, Long furl your brown and white! Shine o’er the ocean wave, Shine o’er the free and brave. And Oh be true forever more, To Ours, the class of 64. RUTH COUTO CLASS MOTTO CLASS COLORS Red and White CLASS SONG (To “May You Always’’) Fare thee well dear Alma Mater; Time has come when we must part. Mem-ries shall forever linger; You ve a place in each one’s heart. Fare thee well to friends and teachers There will always be the memory Of your warm and kindly ways. Four short years have quickly passed; Our futures lie ahead. Though this should be a happy-time, It’s tears of sadness that we shed. And in the years that are to follow We shall be forever true To our school, our Alma Mater. Westport High—Adieu DIANE PETTEY me Advice to the Juniors We, the class of 1964, hereby leave this parting message in the hope that it will be beneficial to you, the class of 1965. As seniors, it will be your responsibility and obligation to establish a firm example for underclassmen. It will be your duty to direct the leadership of the school by obeying school rules, maintaining a high scholastic average, and participating in school activities. Always heed the counsel of your parents and teachers. The advice which you will receive may often seem unreasonable or severe at the time but in the future will be for your well-being. Courtesy and respect for not only faculty members but for all should be inherent in your class personality. School support is one thing that should not be overlooked. Strong support for your class and encouragement from your classmates will help to make your senior year a more successful one. Finally, we would like to convey our best wishes to you, the class of 1965. We hope you will have an enjoyable and prosperous senior year. In a few short years you will be faced with new responsibilities and associations far different from those that you now have. Perhaps it is then that this yearbook will grow more significant, because when your thoughts do return to high school days, it will help to relive many happy moments. Someone has said that advice is one of the easiest things to give but one of the most difficult to accept. Therefore, I shall be brief. No one can guarantee your happiness or success. But if you devote your best effort to tasks assigned, if you are considerate of your fellow man and true to yourself, then the rest is in the hands of God. Best of Luck to the Class of 1964. These now famous words above, taken from the Inaugural Address of the late President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, will forever rank among the greatest echo- ings in history. Yes, we may ask, what of the man who said them, what of John Kennedy? What of the father, the statesman, the great author and creator, the brilliant American? Will he also rank among the immortal greats in our history? How can we not rank him with the Lincolns, the Roosevelts, and the Washingtons of our country ? President Kennedy stood for the people first and foremost. He was a Presi- dent of the peope, for the people, by the people of the United States. His inspirational speeches and his book Profiles i Courage will continue to guide our footsteps, even though the person of John Kennedy can no longer. His life will serve as a symbol of freedom and of America in all her glory. He served us in life, and even death could not sever so great a service. President Kennedy gave our country so much that we cannot begin to approximate what he had yet to give. Will we ever be able to forget what he gave us? No, not as long as there are symbols like Peace Corps, Civil Rights, Cuba, Berlin, and Alliance for Progress, or the refle ction of his courage and fortitude in the American people. The glow- ing personality of John Kennedy can never be forgotten. President John Fitzgerald Kennedy has not left the Americans, nor will he leave us so long as the spirit of his way of life is carried on in the hearts and lives of all Americans. The life of our President was truly a ‘Profile in Courage,’ for by his example he wrote one more chapter in his book. In his undelivered speech, November 22, 1963, the President saw a vision of the world: “We in this country, in this generation, are—by destiny rather than choice— the watchmen on the walls of world freedom. We ask, therefore, that we may be worthy of our power and responsibility—that we may exercise our strength with wisdom and restraint—and that we may achieve in our time and for all time the ancient vision of peace on earth, good will toward men.” 61 NAME Charles Amann Carol Arruda Cheryl Babb Donald Bailey Susan Baker Ellen Beaulieu Roland Bettencourt Monique Blanchette Donna Borden Priscilla Borden Peter Borden Carolyn Boudria David Branco Judith Broadbent Richard Bussiere Rita Casler William Casler Paul Costa Ruth Couto George Crowther Mary DeCosta William Deschenes Raymond Destremps Frederick DiCorpo Donald Fitton Suzanne Fogg Theresa Forand Robert Fournier Jean Gwozdz Ruth Hancock Ann Howland William Isidore Mike Kelley Brenda Kirby Paul Kokoszka Claire LaFlamme Rose Lafleur 49 Sentors th a Nutshell FAVORITE SAYING “Sharp as a moose” ‘“My days are so wondrously free”’ “O Brother” “That bugs me”’ “Really” “leon t cares “Would I do a thing like that” ‘Son of a gun” “If I told ya you’d know” “You're kidding” “Did you do your problems”’ “Sugar” “Back off” “That’s too bad’ “Aie coromba” “You know what he can do”’ Syes.
