Into the world we are going To seek our fortunes each one. School days here we'll remember, When we look back o’er the years Many a good time together Will bring back laughter and tears. Classmates and teachers are parting Some ne’er to meet again. A new goal now we are charting, Leaving we now say “Farewell.” —Joan Rogers CLASS FLOWER White Carnation Class Poem As we leave our Alma Mater, And seek our places in the world, Our hearts are heavy within us, And our thoughts over past years are hurled. We think of all our teachers, Who have helped us through these years, And wish to thank them sincerely For their trouble, their patience and tears. We think of the good times together, We have experienced as a class, And hope those memories forever, Within each heart will last. Now our years here have ended, And a new goal lies ahead, With God’s help we will reach it, If by His hand we are led. —Joan Rogers Gls O 56 “Nothing was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” First Row: B. You have heard down through the years how you have to set examples for the younger generation. This has been quite true but never so much as in your last year of high school. The impressions you leave in the minds of the underclassmen may be the difference between a school which is functioning smoothly or one in which you have no privileges. In our past four years we have enjoyed these privileges only because of the co-operation of student with the faculty. It will be your responsibility to keep up the good work. In order to have a smooth functioning class you should do away with the “cliques.” A divided class will get nowhere. Respect the rulings of the majority and help out in class affairs. Above all, respect your faculty. “They have helped you arrive.to the top of the ladder. Your co-operation with the faculty will bring about good times as well as a stronger union between students and the faculty. We the class of 1956 wish you all the success in your last year and hope you will enjoy it as much as we did. Keep up the good name of Westport High School. DupLEY D. DAVENPORT Gis LS lory Let’s reminisce for awhile shall we? It was September 3, 1952 when 96 of us entered the new Westport High School. In those first confusing days, no thought was given as to what the next four years would bring. Let’s see now, our first class officers were Dudley Davenport, President; Joan Rogers, Vice-President; Shirley Plante, Secretary; Agnes Sylvia, Treasurer and on the Student Council we placed Edith Pilkington and Edward Azevedo. ‘The Seniors, following that hectic week of initiation welcomed us with a “Get Acquainted” dance. Remem- ber our first dance the “Freshman Downpour?’ It was held on April 17, 1953 and was the first time a Freshman class had been allowed to have a dance. We certainly had a grand time both getting ready and putting it on. That year we held our class outing at Horseneck Beach. When we returned for our Sophomore year we elected for class officers Dud, President; Joan, Vice-President; Shirley, Secretary; and Merva Hopkinson, Treasurer. Edith and Roger Roy represented us on the council. It was on February 13 that we held our second dance. ‘That we called “Cupid's Fling.” We all had a good time that nigh t too. Our Sophomore class outing was held at Miles Standish. Remember when we came back in 1954 as Juniors? Half our High School days were over and we were upper classmen now. Mr. Downing was selected to be our class advisor and our class officers for this year were Dud, President; Patricia LaRocque, Vice-President; Shirley, Secretary; and Merva, Treasurer. We put Agnes Sylvia and Frederick Wordell on the council. ‘Then on October 28 and 29 we held our Junior-Senior play, “Girl Shy” and soon after our first dance of the season, “Harvest Hop.”’ Just before Christmas our class rings arrived. We were certainly proud to flash those stylish onyx rings with their classic “W’”’ in the center. A cake sale at McWhirr’s helped our growing treasury. Our big night however was April 22, 1955. We'll always remember that date, for that was the Junior Prom, “Moonlight and Roses.” What a time we had for preparing for that and when the night arrived the auditorium was transformed into a garden. Roses covered every trellis and picket fence and everyone attending agreed that it was a glorious evening. Then finally we were entering our last and most important year. We selected for officers Dud, President; Pat, Vice-President; Annette Benoit, Secre- tary; Merva, Treasurer; Agnes and Freddy for the council and Shirley for Coun- cil at Large. This year we opened the season with the Junior-Senior play “Pro- fessor How Could You.” ‘This was followed by our “Get Acquainted Dance” for the Freshman and soon after we held our “Leapyear Frolic.” Our cake sdle at the Star Store added to the treasury. By now all attention had turned to gradua- tion and work on the yearbook. We selected Cecile Gendreau and Ronald Tripp for our graduation marshalls. And now those High School days are gone and we have only our memories to cherish, but they are very happy memories of four eventful, exciting years. These years and Westport High School will always have a special place in all our hearts. MARGARET SHIELDS Margaret is our tallest guard. She did a ood job of defending the bucket area and in getting rebounds. She has one more year to play for Westport and will prove to be a great asset to the team. PAT, PAU LINE and SALLY These three, who saw considerable action with the varsity this year, will prove to be great assets to the team next year. Pauline is a forward with a quick one-handed set. Sally is another forward with a jumping lay-up. Pat is a short guard, who is very quick and speedy on her feet. These three will fill in the starting berths next year. iu oO © z uw é 2 a) 2 S = —s Y . S ee aa a “SHIRL” 3 Jia, = )ypemeupe J l Wettorios Sel eccin Winning One of wher Many Bee. He is the pivot man and our top rebounder scoring 1153 points in the Narry League in four years. He made the All-Star Narry team for three years. He also made the Bay State All-Star team for two years. Undoubtedly Dud will be missed very much next year. ROGER ROY Roger was our play maker and was sec- ond in scoring on the team. His favorite being a jump from the foul line. He was one of the best guards in the Narry League. RODERICK CADIMA Roddy really came into his own this year. His one hand set kept us in many a game and his driving one hander from the side was one of the best around. ROBERT BRABANT This was Buddy’s first full season at West- port and he gave good account of himself. He had a good jump shot, could drive and added strength to our rebounding. FREDERICK WORDELL Fred was one of our big rebounders and had a following jump shot which was all but impossible to block. This was his last year. GERALD DYSON Gerry like his brother Al had a wonder- ful set shot that kept us in many games. His aggressiveness added to the confusion of the other team. GEORGE JOHNSON George, also a senior, had plenty of the old team spirit with him. George's best shot was his driving layup and added to the team bench strength. WILLIAM GOLLIFF Although Bill is a senior, this was his first year on the team. He didn’t see much ac- tion, but he was always ready to go in and do his best. MANNY, JOHN, PAUL and EDDY These four will have a lot to do with next years team. Paul and Ed will give the team height, and John and Manny both have very good shots. Good luck next year. a HEH Hi : a) 3S Ss we PSS RSM oO ,e) a = a “FREDDY” “TURKEY” Se in ction TM See cer earn Although it didn’t win many games.this year, the soccer team gave every opponent a good fight. ‘The team had quite a few seniors on it so there should be plenty of openings for next year’s team.
