We've stuck together through thick and thin And now it’s on our own way that we begin. Yes, we've had good times together, And now they’re gone; But the memories left Will linger on and on. Barbara A. Sharples Westport High School we bid you good-bye You will always be deep in our hearts, To all the teachers we give our thanks For you showed us the paths that are right. Class Song Westport High School we are leaving, In some eyes you'll find a tear, And a memory in every heart For the cherished days spent here. All the days that have quickly passed And the many friends we have made, But now we must bid it good-bye As we start on our journey ahead. Gladys Longfield Eonar Sere History 1951, Seniors — a word believed to be a most pleasant one, signifying graduation and accomplishment. 1955, Seniors — a word now a reality, a thought calling forth seriousness, the parting of life’s merriest group of companions, and the shouldering of responsibility. In the fall of 1951, seventy-one Freshmen began their high school days. This was the very start of our four successful years at Westport High School. We have many pleas- ant memories as we review the most important events of the past. Back in September, 1951, after surviving a mild week of initiation, our first real step was to get our class organized. We elected our Class Officers and Student Council members: President, Lynwood Comstock; Vice-President, Joseph Sexton; Secretary, Theresa Swartz; Treasurer, Paul Hebert; Student Council, Patricia Wood and Richard Borden. The only highlight of our Freshman year was moving to the new high school at midyear. In June, we held an outing at Horseneck Beach. Our Sophomore year found us more acclimated to high school life. We elected as Class Officers: President, Dana Denault; Vice-President, ‘Theresa Swartz; Secretary, Nancy Smith; Treasurer, Barbara Sharples; Student Council, Patricia Wood and Richard Borden. Our only big event of this year was ‘“The Valentine Dance’ — a great success. Once again we held our outing at Horseneck Beach. Many of our classmates left us at the end of our Sophomore year and as we entered our Junior year we had a total of fifty-two in our class. As Juniors, we chose Miss Cahoon as our Class Advisor. Elected to guide us through our Junior year were: President, Dana Denault; Vice-President, Alford Dyson; Secretary, Aud- rey Lekom; Treasurer, Huguette Ledoux; Student Council, Patricia Wood and Richard Borden. We sponsored several events during this year. “The Basketball Hop” and a cake sale at McWhirrs both proved very successful. The Junior-Senior Play, “Father of the Bride,” under the direction of Mrs. Hemingway, was presented in November. ‘Ebb Tide’ was the theme of our Junior Prom, held in March. Our Class Rings, a gold “W” on a blue face, arrived near the end of the year. Before we left for the summer vacation we elected the Brownie Staff. To end our Junior year we held our outing at Miles Standish Reservation. The class had narrowed to forty-six at the beginning of our Senior year. We settled right down to work and elected the following Class Officers: President, Dana Denault; Vice-President, Michael Cullen and Huguette Ledoux; Secretary, Eleanor Cabral and Audrey Lekom (pro tem). Treasurer, Virginia Gray; Student Council, Patricia Wood and Richard Borden. Nancy Smith and Joseph Sexton were voted as members of the Student Council at Large. Dana Denault was chosen as the General Manager of the Curtis Campaign and did an excellent job. Dana was also chosen as Student Government Representative and Eleanor Cabral was chosen as D.A.R. Repre- sentative. The Junior-Senior Play “Girl Shy,” once again under the direction of Mrs. Hemingway, was presented late in October. Two dances, “The Welcome Freshman Dance” in November and ‘Casual Caper” in January, were Senior activities. Two cake sales at McWhirrs and another dance in March all aided in building up our Class ‘Treasury. We chose as Marshals for our graduation Geraldine Medeiros and William Golliff. Robert Bienvenue left us in January to enter the Coast Guard. During the remainder of the year the class worked on the yearbook and looked forward to Class Day, Graduation, our Senior Prom and the: Class Trip. Our Senior year was the grand finale of all preceding years and it prepared us for Lappier and more successful futures. Beverly Reed Patricia Wood SENIOR . Your Senior year will certainly be one of the things that you will recall most in later years. We hope that this advice will in some way assist you in your careers as Seniors. Co-operation and unity are the two most important factors that determine the success of any class. Leaders cannot function without an effective and unified group behind them. Co-operation, not only within the class but with others is necessary. Extra-curricular activities will play a vital role in your Senior year. Also, they will gain you a certain amount of pleasure and responsibility, essentials throughout life. Above all, don’t let your seniority get the best of you. Along with becoming a Senior you have inherited a great deal of responsibility which will continue to increase the farther you go on in life. Remember, you are the examples for the underclassmen. During the next year you will face problems that might cause immediate depression. These should be met with strong determination. Failure to do this will be evidence that you are not mature enough to solve situations, and it is maturity of this sort which will characterize your success in life. In closing, we the Class of 1955, wish you happiness and success as Seniors. We are confident that you will do much to carry on the name of our school. Dana K. He was a loyal substitute, who was rez ady whenever he was called upon. Franny had great speed and was an asset to us. AL DYSON “Dice” was the second of the 5 seniors. He possessed an exceptional set shot, from the corners, which won many games for us. Al was one of the playm: ikers a the team, and he turned out some pretty sensational passes. Al was a 4 year man. JOE SEXTON Joe was one of our most potent scorers. Also a senior, he varied a one hand set shot, with a driving layup, to grab most of his points. He was strong under the boards as well. DANA DENAULT Dana, the 4th of the “senior 5,”’ filled the forward spot this year. Using his height to advantage, he possessed a good jump shot. Though he was not a remarkable point getter, Dana was worth his weight this year. BRUCE BOUDAKIAN “Bo,” the 5th senior saw much action this year. He was especially effective with his driving layup, and thrilled the crowds with his two hand set. “Bo” added strength to the starting 5 this year. ROGER ROY “Rog” was a big “cog” in the teams work- ing this year. He had a terrific one hand set, and was a great playmaker. He'll be back next year. DUD DAVENPORT “Dud,” as in the past 2 years, has led the team. His remarkable jump shots, and un- canny rebounding, are of All Narry calibre. Next year should be the big one for “Dud.” GERRY, RODDY, FRED, AND JOE These four, who saw considerable action with the first team this year, will have to fill the bill next year. She recovered many rebounds from the basket and sent them back with her overhead shots. Merva set up countless plays and screens for the other forwards. BARBARA SHARPLES “Barb” was in top shape and always ready to go in and fight when summoned. She was a very capable guard and one of our reliable substitutes. AGNES SYLVIA Agnes was our number one guard thi: season. She was especially effective in re trieving distant rebounds and excelled ir pass interceptions. Agnes was a populat team-mate and will be a valuable asset tc the team next year. SHIRLEY PLANTE Shirley is a speedy guard. She aided the team with her close guarding and fast dribbling. Shirley displays an easy-going manner on the floor and she seldom fouls an opponent. PATRICIA WOOD “Pat’’? was converted from a forward to a guard this:season. She did a good job in defending the bucket area and in getting rebounds. ‘This was her final season for Westport. CAROLYN SMITH Carolyn was injured at mid-season; thus, she did not see much action. She did a good job whenever she saw action at guard position. She has two more years to play for Westport. Our girls’ basketball team did not have a very successful season this year, winning only one out of eight games. This was largely a result of the fact that Agnes Sylvia was the only varsity member back from last year. Miss Andrade concentrated on building the group with the hope of having another championship team in a year or two. ‘The guards learned many new skills and did very well with their zone defense. Agnes Sylvia was our star guard and was especially effective in getting distant rebounding and pass interceptions. Shirley Plante played outstanding defensive ball and is well known for her speedy dribbling. Patricia Wood, converted from a forward to a guard, defended the bucket area and did a good job in controlling the backboards. Barbara Sharples and Carolyn Smith were very reliable subs and performed well whenever they were called upon. The forwards concentrated on fast, accurate passing and fast cutting. Virginia Cabral was our star forward and was our most valuable player. Patricia LaRocque, another good forward, was especially effective with her set shots. Merva Hopkinson was the playmaker and did an excellent job in getting rebounds and feeding to the other forwards. The second team gained valuable experience this year. Many were playing basketball for the first time and displayed enthusiasm in every game. ‘The second team members include: Geraldine Medeiros, Joan Rogers, June Austin, Carol Palmer, Margaret Shields, Evonne Rossi, Cecile Gendreau, Dorothy Laprise, Patricia Vieira, Luella Butts, Katherine Halloran, Collette Castonguay, Madeline Raposa, Pauline Gaudreau, Barbara Vieira, Jane Brightman, and Patricia Roberts. The team managers, Janet Baker, Ann Rusin, and Nancy Smith, and the entire team extend their many thanks to-Miss Andrade for her coaching during the season.
