The junior varsity football team had several oppor- tunities, four, to display all of their character. However, considering the team consisted main- ly of freshmen. Coach Reg McShane felt the team did fairly well. The players had to adjust to me as a new head- coach along with my offensive philosophy. Our junior varsity program is essential to the suc- cess of the varsity program. It is important for these young kids to get in some playing time. The following were members of the junior var- sity football team of 1986: James Zerba, Andy Betts, Bill Hearn, John Shafer, James Hall, De- vin Hanson, Robert Muniz, John Bjorklund, Jamie Mascak, Chris Smith, Dan Morton, Mar- cus Luke, Brian Nye, Mike Butler, Bill Hansell, Kevin Scheibner, Steve Cassel, Tim Cassel. This was the last year that the photo department was under the expert supervision of Mr. Gottfried, as he announced his re- tirement plans after the 86-87 school year. Mr. Gottfried spent 37 years teaching in this school dis- trict, and after 13 years with an in- credibly successful photo depart- ment, he will be sorely missed. 24 Photo Left: Photo I students, front row: LaVerna DuBois, Christy Shafer, Tricia Bonham, Kim Donnely. THE CITY OF ATHENA Photo 25 STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASB President, Darla Joy The ASB officers had a busy year. President Darla Joy lead ASB officers Scott Miller, Becky Gould, Steve Cassel, Ernie Clark, and Shane Mallory into many campaigns throughout the year. One such campaign was earning money for a new scoreboard in the gym. In accomplishing this they sold 700 cases of soft drinks which paid for the 2600 dollar electronic scoreboard. Some other activities they participated in were attending leadership camp, organizing a clean-up litter day, hosting natitional school assemblies, and sponsoring a quilt raffle. Right: Mark Erickson THE EAST OREGONIAN SCOTT MILLER, ANNUAL EDITOR The Publication Department had a well- rounded working year. The department was honored by Miss Spiess, a student teacher who worked briefly on the annual staff. The annu- al and newspaper had only six students at the beginning of the year but eventually gained three more. The newspaper was reduced from four pages to one, enabling news to be more accurate and current. The Publication Depart- ment is much like any other department, it has to raise funds for the annual. The many ways they raised money were selling candy at break, selling ads, getting page sponsors, annual sales and running the dartboard booth at the Ice Cream Social. They also ran the concession stand during C team games. The Paws and Claws annual was under the direction of editor Scott Miller throughout the 86-87 school year. The Spanish club was a very busy organization raising money for their trip to Mexico next year. Their fund raising activities included the taco feed, selling family portraits, a dance during Pioneer Days, and various other money making activities. They are well on their way to reaching their goal. It was a profitable year and the addition of the freshmen was a great asset to the program. 28 Spanish CLASS OF '88 The class of 1988 had a very busy year. They had many students participate in sports, and had two Varsity cheerleaders. Many of the students were active in drama, Spanish, F.F.A., F.H.A., and pipes and drums. During the basketball season, the junior class worked in the concession stand, to earn money for the Prom. After Prom, the juniors decorated for Graduation. The TigerScots acquired a new coach this year as Greg Fazzari stepped in to lead the TigerScots. He pre- sented the team with many new techniques and ideas that helped them throughout the year. The class changed the usual tradition of a live band and chose to have taped music with a light show and videos. They saved quite a bit of money by doing this and realized it was a good idea. The prom was alot of fun and all who attended enjoyed themselves. BILL ALEXANDER Faculty 77 ADMINISTRATION Completing nine years as a board member, Terry Schmidtgall served for the second time as chairman of the board. Two visible changes were in evidence at the begin- ning of the school year, the addition of the ninth grade to the high school and the move of the old administration building to the high school campus. The old administration building was converted to additional classroom space. Eight major areas were selected as goals for the year. These were student standards of achievement, evaluation of instruc- tional staff for improvement, academic program, extracurricular program, public relations, adminis- tration operative, long range management program for building, grounds and transportation, and stu- dent behavior and discipline. Pictured: Mrs. Janet Hanson, Mrs. Theta Williamson, Mrs. Terry BETTY KESLING, Oeputy Clerk Schmidtgall, seated. Mike Terry, Dick Scheibner, Charles Betts, and Cordon Reinhart, standing. Mrs. Kesling, after sixteen years, still enjoyed working for the district. Her position entailed many different jobs. She was secretary to the superintendent and the board. She was the dis- trict financial recorder. She made the payroll. Her attendance was required at board meetings and budget meetings. She worked with Mr. Bechtel preparing the district's budget. Her quiet, behind the scenes, actions kept the district running 78 Administration smoothly. DARLENE BANNISTER Mr. Verle Bechtel, superintendent, sought to find ways to utilize the staff more efficiently to better serve the addi- tional students and to provide potential class offerings. Because of the size of the school and the addition of the ninth grade, many teachers were misassigned which com- plicated this task for him. One major priority was to get into each class during the year. He felt it was important to complete a long range building and grounds maintenance program. In addition, staff development as a long range plan received a considerable amount of his attention. The desire to return to a small community in Eastern Oregon brought Mr. Lynn Harris, vice principal, to the district. His background included a wide variety of educa- tional experiences. A graduate of Montana State, he at- tended a number of colleges and universities including Eastern Oregon State, University of Oregon, and Oregon State University. He received his masters from Portland State College. As an under graduate at Eastern Oregon State College, he played football for two years. After 23 years, Mr. Harris continued to maintain enthusiasm for the game. He coached the varsity football team. He espe- cially liked preparing for ball games. Mr. Harris was in charge of discipline, activities, counseling and staff super- vision. HE enjoyed his job and was pleased with his choice. LYNN HARRIS Usually the first person a visitor saw upon entering WM was Mrs. Darlene Bannister. For 23 years, she has been running the office. Her job consist of enrollment-atten- dance, secretary to the principal and vice-principal, mark report and overseeing the athletic ticket sales. Through Mrs. Bannister's efforts, the school machinery ran smoothly for another year.
