Their first performance was at the WM fall concert and later they teamed up with the Jazz Ensemble to put on a perfor- mance which was followed by a dessert. The next big activity the choir was preparing for was the annual WM Christmas concert. The annual Tri-County choir festival was held in Condon. Our WM chorus attended this all day activity and enjoyed it very much. Another important performance was a contest held at BMCC. Ratings are on a scale of one to five, ones being the highest. The WM choir earned two -ones and a one. Again teaming up with the Jazz band, the chorus took half a day off from school to perform for the Helix schools and at the Athena-Weston Jr. High. A few weeks later the Spring concert was field in the WM gym. The choir also performed at the 1984 Baccalaureate while only Senior members of the chorus sang at their graduation. This means that they either live on the mountain, in Wes- ton, or down on the river. The bus that brings the students down from the mountain also brings the students in Weston to the high school. The first students to get onto the bus board around 7:25 a m.; then travel around 50 miles a day. There are two river buses. The first starts picking up students at 7:00 and travels 28 miles a day. The second starts loading at 7:10 and then travels 36 miles. This isn t the only mileage the peo- ple who ride buses get in one year. There are athletic trips, the closest be- ing 30 miles away, track meets, and band and choral festivals. It is obvious that the ones who have it the hardest are the school buses. With all the trips back and forth to school, the buses travel a total of 20,064 miles a year. This is a lot of miles being traveled by our students, bus drivers, and the buses. Above: Linda Davis, Mary Belita, Wendy Fifield, Tony Teel 37 The class of '84 became an anniver- sary class upon graduation. Ten years ago, after years of rivalry, the Weston High School and McEwen High school became one when the two dis- tricts merged. From the merge also came two mascots, Tigers and Scot- ties. The trial became permanent and the high school became known as Weston McEwen High School with mascots-TigerScots. A new idea in education, many ob- stacles had to be overcome. To make a program like this work required an attitude of cooperation. Students, fac- ulty and communities put behind old rivalries and loyalties and worked to make the merge a success. Many changes have occurred over the past ten years. Academically, the course offerings adjusted as emphasis shifted. The business department no longer has two teachers. Shorthand, consumer education, world of busi- ness are courses no longer offered. A student in business may take account- ing, business lab which consists of typing II, office machines or office management, and all sophomores must take at least one half year of typing. In fine arts, the stage band has been replaced by jazz band, which is of- fered early bird. Two classes of art are offered along with mechanical draw- ing and architectual drafting on alter- nate years. Arts and crafts are no longer offered. The Highland Lassies Pipes and Drums became Weston McEwen Pipes and Drums with the addition of the lads. The English department has be- come more traditional in its offerings. The elective offerings are limited to three, individual reading, dramatics and journalism. Sophomores are re- quired to take composition and speech. Juniors take American Litera- ture for a year and seniors take Eng- lish 12 composition, with a semester choice between science fiction, short story, mythology or world literature. The school newspaper and annual are published in journalism class. The home economics program re- mains on a semester basis, with child development, family life, clothing, foods and home ec III offered. Food service, advance clothing and home decorating have been discontinued. Students eat lunch at Athena Grade School instead of the home ec. food service. 38 MIKE TOWNSEND MARY BELITA GLORIA MUNIZ JOHN BOND WOODHALL CONSTRUCTION DAVE DABULSKIS JAMIE EASLEY 39 TONYA KESLINC MELINDA BETTS The social studies department no longer offers any electives. Sopho- mores take one year of global stud- ies, juniors take American history, and seniors take a semester of po- litical citizenship. Vocational education has con- struction, three years of vo-ag, welding and metals fabrication. Automotive repair has been discon- tinued. A green house is currently under construction. Wood shop moved from the junior high to the senior high in 1982. A large in- crease in vo-ag membership began in 1983. Spanish class continues a so- journ to Mexico every other year. The trip has been shortened to eleven days. Two classes of Spanish 1 were offered in 1983-84 due to increased enrollment in Spanish. Math and science has made sev- eral additions. Most noticeable is the renovation of the science room. Physics and chemistry are taught alternating years. No longer do computer science students use Otis. Four computers are available in the math room and one with a word processor is located in the business department. Instead of a full year of modern problems, seniors take a year of personal finance. There are eight full time teachers as opposed to eleven at the time of the merger. Six faculty members are shared with other schools mak- ing a total class offering to lOVi teachers. Several members of the faculty are still with the district since the merge. These include Mr. Gottfried, Mr. Taylor, Mrs. MtLean, Mr. Pyle and Miss Feh- renbacher. Mrs. Bannister contin- ues to do an outstanding job as school secretary. In athletics, the winning ways of both schools continue. In 1973-74, the girl's basketball team was district champions. No state playoffs were held then. The boys team finished fourth in the state defeating Waldport 64-46. The baseball team advanced to the quar- ter finals losing to Bonanza. Tami Sams - javelin and Tami Kesling - 100 yd dash were to state in track. Jay Johnson - javelin, Joe McBean - shot put, Tony Villanueva - discus and John Adams - high jump com- peted at the boys state track meet. Villanueva placed fourth with a throw of 133'9 . The 1983 W.M. football team ended the season with a 4-4 season and conference record and 4th place overall in league standings. Lady Luck did not shine on the team this year. There were several injuries and alot of tough breaks, but the team pulled through with what hussle they had and finished with a rather respectable season. Coached by Reggie McShane and Dave Cannon the team had a really successful season in the sense that they played all their oppo- nents tough and maintained a J.V. team with a very small squad. The J.V. team was hurt by ineligibility and they had to play 10 to 12 players with essentially no players on the bench. Mark Kirk was hurt midway through the season which definitely hurt us and the people that did play all season were very dedicated people, which showed when they won their last game of the season, compliment- ed coach McShane. They had eight meets during the season. The five re- maining members: John Picard, Rick Scheibner, Lance Jones, John Reming- ton and Jeff Jaggars, ran at the J.V. district meet. John Remington with impediments of an injury placed sixth. Coach Jaggars commented, Everybody improved through the season so it was a good season in that aspect. Volleyball team showed much improvement toward the end of the season, with their last two games against Heppner and Umatilla being their best. Throughout the year the team fo- cused on improving their skills to be a better ball player. The J.V. team won eight matches and lost ten. 54 55 VOLLEYBALL JO ANN KING KIM BENZEL SHANNON KING Mike Kyles coaches his young Tigerscot team to another successful season. The Weston-McEwen var- sity volleyball team finished their 1983 season with a 12-8 record. Led by senior co-captains Tonya Kesling and Shannon King, WM placed fourth in the East division. Donna Schiewe was named to the all confer- ence second team. PICTURED are Kim Martin, Kim Benzel, Ann Shanks, Shannon King, Tonya Kesling. Trisia Quaempts, Donna Schiewe, LaShelle Lieuallen, Shelly Morrison, Sarah Schmidtgall, Angie Judd, Coach: Mike Kyles We were a very young team that played well above our potential, with young girls, who learned alot from the seniors. Returning will be a strong nucleus for a good team next year, reported Mr. Kyles. 58 VARSITY BASKETBALL After winning the district tournament, the joyous team poses for a picture. Coached by Larry Stevens, the TigerScots re- cord speaks for itself. In conference play they only lost one game to a very tough team. In post season the TigerScots won four and lost one. That one loss in post season play was in the state A basketball tournament. Top left: senior Johnny Bond. Middle-Cen- ter: Hakan Bjor starts the game with a jump ball. Top right: senior Bob Fox. Kneeling: Manager Jeff Elder, Coach Reggie McShane. The Weston-McEwen J.V. boys bas- ketball capped the 1983-84 season with a 9-8 record. The boys had the unusual distinction of playing in the most nail- biting games of any WM team. The out- come was rarely known to the spectators as time and time again it went right down to the wire. John Remington and Marvin Fisher topped the team in scor- ing, and Remington topped the team in rebounds. Coach McShane was very pleased with the team's defense and felt they should have won more games then they did. Jeff Jaggars illuminates the fact that, it isn't how you look, it's the end result that counts. Kelly Holloway finds him- self surrounded as he at- tempts a layin. John Reitz displays his leaping leaner from the corner. Tonya Kesling finished the year in the top twenty in scoring in the league and was voted to the sec- ond all conference team. Donna Schiewe also received an all star reward by making the all-tour- nament team in the Imbler tour- nament early in the season. The baseball team was very success- ful this year as their league record of 15-2 indicated. Although they had the same amount of losses as Pilot Rock they did not go to district because the Rockets beat them two out of three times in the season. The Tigerscots non-league record was 3-4 totaling to a 18-6 season record. Making first team All-Conference were Ray Brixey, Tom Meier, Tony Teel and Mark Youncs. Making second team All- Conference were Damon Nash, Rick Scheibner and Dalan Urquhart. Chuck Ford and Lance Jones made honorable mention. 71 Track Team: Tonya Kesling, Dan Patterson, George Alleman, Greg Benzel, John Reitz, Donna Schiewe, Hans Schroeder, Matt Sheoshops, Molly Betts, Karen Bjorklund, Kim Brallier, Trent Eastman, Marvin Fisher, Jeri Reinhart, Shane Robins, Cheri Bernier, Mark VanOcker, Laura Caldwell, Tammy Picard, Tara Kesling, Forrest Snodgrass. The dance was held on the week before the Home- coming activities and the football game against Pilot Rock ended the week on October 24. Throughout the week the classes competed in many different activities. Monday as 'pajama' day, Tuesday was hush' day, Wednesday, punk' day, Thursday was 'hat' day, and Friday 'red, white, and black' day. The noise parade and poster contest were won by the sophomores. The class compe- tition was won by the seniors who received a new spirit stick from the teachers. The spirit stick is not a per- manent possession however. 75 PICTURED: Todd shows his muscles to Mrs. Schubert. Trent gives Mike a ride. John does a belly dance. Angie and Molly bathe. Jeff enjoys being a girl. Mrs. Bannister gets involved. Kim samples the mush. Initiation week focused on sopho- mores in October. The class of B6 real- ly enjoyed initiation. Some cooperated and others didn't but they all got the same equal treatment. The seniors started the sopho- more's week by having them wear dirty, sweaty socks that the football team provided. The second day the sophomores got to be slaves for their senior. On the following day the sophomores displayed their talent for the rest of the student body. The last day was the one that everyone looked forward to. The sophomores all pa- raded down main street and back to the high school for more activities on the football field. All in all they were good sports and they can officially say that they're W- M Tigerscots. 76 ON THE GO Pictured above: John Remington and Tom Meier, chosen as Representatives from Weston McEwen for Boys State.
