Mr. Jim Cahill —School Board Mr. Sheldon Kirk — School Board SCHOOL BOARD AND ADMINISTRATION School district 29R is responsible tor the education of all the students in Athena and Weston. The combind community education program is vested in these elected officials. Mr. Russel McCollister is the Superintend- ent of the district. Mr. Terry Gail is our Principal here at W-M Mr. Charles McCullough — School Board Mr. Ted Meinhart — School Board Mr Terry Gail — Principal 13 MUSIC Mr. and Mrs. Steve Pyle handle all the music in the District 29-R (except for the Junior High cho- rus). They have classes here at the High School which include, Concert Band, Pep Band, and Chorus. The flute players are taking a break during a concert One and uh two You're supposed to blow on it, not eat it Yvonne!1 Is Mrs Pyle always that cheerful at 8 in the morning? Ah Choooo!!! u English 12 is really the pits ORGANIZATION?! ENGLISH The English department consists ot Mr. Janice Golbek and Mr Rick Jaggars. Students at W-M are required to take English 10, Speech, 3 liter- ature courses and English 12. A student has a wide and varied range ot courses from which to select an interest area. Some of the more popular courses are Myth and Legend, West- ern Novel and Individualized Reading. And here's Mrs Golbek One more pose and you'll be finished tor the day 15 MATH SCIENCE Mr. Elvin Taylor handles all of the mathematics courses while Mr. Doug Marshall tackles the science courses. Some of the electives include: Chemistry, Physics, Adv. Biology, geometry, math analysis and Computer Programming. With the addition of the new science room, our qual- ity of education has jumped tremendously to better meet the needs of our students. We moved into the new room in January of the new year. With these added facilities we now have a modern up to date room equipped with the latest in science room equipment. Can you believe what Math Analysis can do to a guy? and I Command thee to do 1 -43 on page 96. 'The computer screwed up no doubt!1 16 HOME ECONOMICS Ms. Mary Jane Fehrenbacher teaches all of the classes in the totally elective home economics department. Many more boys have become active in these classes. Family Life. Foods I II and Clothing as well as Home Ec. I II help com- prise the list of courses available Often times extravagant meals are prepared by the cooking classes. Some of the smells wafting from the Home Ec. room tantalize the sensations of the student body's noses Many of these classes are very practical and offer the student an opportunity to deal with subject matter that is very relevant today. 17 'I love those lunches'11 SPANISH AND DRIVERS ED. Mr John Huntsman teaches Spanish and Drivers Ed. at Weston-McEwen. Of the two classes he teaches, one is required for graduation, which is Drivers Ed. classroom. Whether or not the student takes the driving portion of Drivers Ed. is strictly up to that student. Earlier this year, the school purchased a new Drivers Ed. car for field train- ing in this area. Above — A centerfold in a Spanish BookW 18 BUSINESS EDUCATION At Weston-McEwen, Business Education is taught by Mrs. Florence Gilliland and Mr Terry Harrison. Business Education includes Accounting, and Typing, taught by Mrs. Gilliland, with Business Lab: and Personal Finance, taught by Mr Terry Harrison. Ot these classes, two are required for graduation. They are, 1 semester of Typing, and 1 full year of Personal Finance. 19 VOCATIONAL AG. AND SHOP Vo-Ag and Shop classes are taught by Mr. Shanks and Mr. Lange. Mr. Shanks works here at the high school. They learn such things as welding, glass cut- ting and soldering. Mr. Lange works at the Jr. high school. They learn wood skills there. FFA is a part of Vocational Agriculture. Students participate in differ- ent shows and the State Convention. Mr Nash teaches Social and Political Citizenship and U. S. History Big “G teaches Social and Political Citizenship, Psychology and the Middle East. Mr. Kyles teaches Political Citizenship. Any Senior would tell you that was a hard class! They dis- cussed the Constitution, laws, mental diseases, Propaganda and the growth of our nation. Most of these classes are required for graduation. Far right — And they thought Einstein was great! Above — You caught me on that one! 21 PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH Mr Mike Kyles is the P. E. and health teacher. His job consist of teaching the required classes to mostly Sophomores, but he does teach advanced P. E. to a few wandering strays. Mr Kyles also teaches one of the classes of Political Citizen- ship, and is a Junior advisor. Although you may think he only owns short pants, he does occasionally dress fully to teach the rest of his classes. Look ma, no hands. Mrs. McLean's duties include taking care of long lost students, setting Seniors straight on college, and patrolling the halls.(?) Along with keeping the library in order, she is a Senior counselor, and student counselor. The Weston-McEwen secretary is Darlene Ban- nister Mrs. Bannister calls herself Girl Friday,” and her duties include taking care of the students' absences, keeping the student records in file, and doing many dulies for Mr. Gail and all of us. ASB President Mark Johnson and the student council members met an average of twice monthly during noon. Lame McMillan. The W-M Club is a group of students that have lettered in a varsity sport. Each fall they are kept very busy with the football concessions, and putting on the Homecoming festivities. The Weston-McEwen football team did very well this season. Having to replace many sen- iors from the previous year, new head coach Doug Marshall rebuilt the team and led them to a tine 6-3 record. The team finished third in the always tough CBC. 31 32 BONFIRE1 The Bonlife brought an enormous crowd, with more than just students. Tim and Shelly having a blast at Homecoming Dance. Tuesday started the week oft with everyone wear- ing funny hats. Wednesday brought the entire school in grubbies. Thursday night each organi- zation made a float. There was a parade with all the floats down Mainstreet. The Bonfire after- wards had a really big crowd with more than just students. Friday people wore shirts for people to sign, this was a very memorable event. To top Spirit week off our big homecoming game was with Sherman County. The outcome found the Huskies with O and the Tiger-Scots with 30” points! This excellent outcome from the game made the dance terrific. 33 SPIKERS MAKE IT TO DISTRICT J. V. This tradition is Sophomore Initiation. Sophomores showed their spirit by dressing up in hideous outfits. They marched up and down Main Street Athena. They bravely took their predestined ill- fate. Some of them had to sing, eat, dance, and perform various stunts. The sophomores were thoroughly embarrassed on the whole and the rest of the student body, especially the seniors were thoroughly entertained. Thank you. soph- omores for the very enjoyable and not long to be forgotten memories. They put on one play, “Murder on Center Stage and five one act plays. The kids really put forth a lot of effort. Their cake raffle production was a highlight of the basketball season. MARLIN’S SNOWMOBILES 50 GIRLS FINISH 12-8 The girls and Coach Debbie Lewis ended the season with a 12-8 record. Two seniors ended their High School basketball career with that record. They were Kathy Cahill and Patti Towne (shown in vertical shots). At the end of the season, the team voted Kathy Cahill as Team Captain and MVP, Julie Sco- field as Most Improved, and Leona Sams as Most Inspirational. These young TigerScots melded togefher and formed an impressive group of young talent. Their inexperi- ence caught up with them in the Dis- trict Tournament where they lost both games The team was awarded the Sportsmanship Award during the Tournament. Jerry Miguez was voted to the first team all-CBC and District Tournament teams. Frank Webb, Ken Devereaux and Kent Kilby all made the Honorable Mention teams. The hearty, dedi- cated students who came to school early made up a fine group of singers The choir was a little bit larger than last year with more male voices. The choir indulged in the concerts with the band, and they also per- formed with Pilot Rock at a Choral Exchange in the spring. They were entered in many photography shows and they also took pictures for the paper and the annual Some of the shows they have been in were the Pota- to® Show and Art Festival, the Oregon Wheat League and the Inland Empire Photography Show. In all of these shows they have taken many tro- phies and ribbons The Weston-McEwen Photography Department Spon- sors the Inland Empire Photography Show every year. All the high schools and jr highs in the Northwest can enter This year Weston-Ewen had 2 division winners, 6 blue ribbons and many red and whites The Photography Department also was entered in the Skills Contest at Blue Mountain Community College. The Skills Contest is where all the high schools east of The Dalles, show their skills in many areas. Photography is one of these areas and Weston-McEwen did very well. They won all the blue ribbons, all the red but one and 50% of the white ribbons. The photo dept's. average score was 90%. They had their annual Taco Feed for the Pilot Rock basketball game and had a cake raffle. There were only four seniors on the team. Even with the abun- dance of youth, the team finished with a 4-4 league record Jon Salter was the MVP while frosh Ross Sim- mons was the leading hitter Tod Snider won the gold glove award, and Jr Sam was the most inspirational. Mr. Huntsman coached the run- ning events and Mr. Marshall coached the field events. Not only did the tracksters run, stretch and perspire together, but they encouraged each other. The boys took 2nd at District and 5th at State Brandt, Jim. Jack, John and Frank repre- sented us at the State Meet. Brandt was the high-scoring boy at the meet winning the 300 and 110 hurdles, 5th in the triple jump and anchored the relay team. Sandra Sloan As in every tennis season, the coach starts out with more people than she knows what to do with, but it always seems when the end of the season nears the players can be counted on the fingers of both hands. The tennis team was very young with only two seniors. They did well in their matches considering their lack of experi- ence. To cover up their lack of experi- ence, the learned how to hurdle the net wihout tripping and falling on their newly purchased Wilsons. Freshman Kelly Burke was the outstand- ing singles player. Barb Thompson and Leona Sams were the number 1 doubles team.
