Their eyes were turned toward the future with dreams and aspirations for a new generation of sons and daughters. This was reflected in the migration of pioneer families from such states as Virginia, Mississippi, and Alabama to this part of north Louisiana. The desire for land on which to build a home, to make a living, and to rear a family was the motive for migration. This section of the hill country in Jackson Parish offered agrarian families ample government land that could be had by taking advantage of the homestead laws which enabled them to purchase the land for a very small sum per acre and then on terms. The forest contained much wild game, and the region was a healthful one. The need for a school was one of the early problems of the community. In 1882 a public school was begun in a one room log cabin on the old Natchi- toches road about a mile south of the present location with Mr. R. S. Graham as principal. About thirty students attended this school, studying from Webster's Blueback Speller, McGuffey's Reader, Cornell's Geography, and University Arithmetic. In 1883 the school was moved to Rocky Springs, a mile west of the present site, and continued there until 1889 under the principalship of T. H. DeLony. About 1890 the community school was moved to the present site which was donated by Mr. Billy Walsworth. A two-story frame building was erected. The Masonic Order occupied the upper room and the one room school was housed in the lower room. Mr. A. M. Wailes and his daughter, Frankie, taught sev- eral terms here being paid fifty dollars a month by the school board. When this building became inadequate a two room structure was built. Both buildings were used for some time. In 1914 the enrollment had increased until there was need for additional housing space. A two-story frame building was erected in 1914 at a cost of 35, 000. 00. The former building was renovated and used as a domestic science cottage, with Miss Syble Lane the first domestic science teacher. In 1915 Weston School was officially made a high school. This new school plant was completely destroyed by fire after only one year of service. The insurance was applied on the three-story brick building, erected in 1916 at a cost of 311, 000. 00, which partly houses Weston High School today. The year 1918 was a thrilling one for students and patrons as it marked the first commencement. The two graduates were Molly Freeman Casey, now retired and living in St. Louis, and Webb McBride, now principal of Oak Grove High School, Oak Grove, Louisiana. With the beginning of a high school, football became a popular sport and a few years later Weston boasted a district championship team. Basketball was, at this time, as well as on through the years, of much interest to the girls. Weston is proud of all its girls' and boys' teams. Much of her teaching is done in projects built around holidays and special events such as Book Week, Easter, Polio drives, and birthdays of famous people. Assembly programs and others grow out of these in which students design costumes and scenery as well as write the narration. She likes to make and save snapshots of these school activities. When not in school she enjoys entertaining her friends under ten, readin and cooking. Mrs. Tait has taught at Wes- ton for the past eight years. gn Velma Koonce B.A., La. Tech. She teaches the first grade and has for the past twelve years. Miss Koonce is a life long resident of this community, having grad- uated from this school. During her high school days she was secretary of Community Programs under the direction of Miss Mary Mims. In her early teaching years she coached girls' basketball in other schools of the parish. After school hours she likes to garden, arrange flowers, sew, and em- broider. She also likes to fish and to watch boxing on TV. Lois Kinman, B.S., La. Tech. For the past six years Mrs. Kinman has taught at Weston. Her work has included third, fourth, and fifth grades. This year she has fourth and fifth grades. She likes and uses the unit method of teaching with the help of the ditto machine, films, and other visual aids. Cre- ative activities are encouraged among her students in connection with arts and sciences. Inher spare time Mrs. Kinman enjoys reading, crocheting, gardening, and tending her farm animals. Olive True, B.S., La. Tech, also registered dietitian having interned at Anchor Hospital, St. Paul, Minnesota. With her husband, an Army Engineer, she has lived in Hawaii, France, and many different states of the U.S. Now she is in Germany. Before leaving Wes- ton at mid term she taught the fifth and sixth grades. Her outside interests are sewing and baking. B. A. Busbice, B.S., Northeast State College. l-le teaches Algebra l and II, seventh grade science, eighth grade math and physical edu- cation. Mr. Busbice is coach of the boys' basketball team and sponsor of the eighth grade class. His favorite outside activities are hunting and sports. She teaches seventh history, eleventh and twelfth history, eighth history, seventh Eng- lish, seventh and eighth grade physical edu- cation, and is sponsor for the seventh grade class. After school hours she likes to play the piano, sing, and entertain her three young sons. Mrs. Busbice teaches home economics I,II,III, IV, English II, and eighth grade home living. She is sponsor of the Future Homemakers of America and of the tenth grade class. She is our librarian and teaches English I and III, and seventh grade mathematics. She is sponsor of the ninth grade class, and this year presented a junior play. After school is out, she likes to sing and read. This isher first year at Weston. E. L. Busbice, B.S., LSU. He teaches I, II, III, IV Agriculture and physical education to the junior high boys, and coaches the high school girls' basketball team. His outside interests are sports and hunting. Except for one year in service he has taught at Weston since 1940. Mrs. Otis Hurst, B.S., Southwestern Louisiana Institute, member of Weston fac- ulty since 1946. Mrs. Hurst teaches eighth grade English, English 4, science, biology, and chemistry. She is yearbook advisor and senior class sponsor. Each spring she directs the senior play and commencement exercises. Cooking, reading, and horseback riding are activities she enjoys in her spare time. Mrs. James Gleason, B.M., La. Tech. She is the music teacher for each class in the school. Mrs. Gleason also teaches at three other schools in the parish. In her spare time she enjoys singing, sewing, and cooking.
