The best of today's memories, those special moments which we will never forget will become our classics of tomorrow. CLASSIC MOMENTS Classic moments in the life of Joe Tuttle: 2:50 p.m. Fridays, Christ- mas breaks, spring break, and the end of school. Joe Tuttle My classic moment was when I found out I was going to Girls' State. That meant I got out of all my final exams, especially Phys- ics. Johnna Smith My classic moment was being chosen to be a member of the yearbook staff. I couldn't believe that I was capable of helping oth- ers to create a book for my school. The ex- citement and curiosity of the up- coming year made me burst with overflowing happiness. -- Ursula Dinkins Grasshoppers and study hall do not mix. They leave their high school years with ex- pectations for the future and the advantages that dedica- tion and commitment have given them. Nine years of commitment has rewarded Rachel Tuttle with a sense of accomplish- ment and memories of many good times. She has been in 4-H since the 4th grade. She says the reasons she's stayed in 4-H are because of the friends she makes from other states, the fun, the re- wards, and the experience it gives her. In addition to win- ning many awards, Rachel says that 4-H has been a learning experience that never seemed like one. Lorie Akins starts basic training after graduation at Fort Jackson. South Caroli- na. She is a person who is going places. She has joined the Army in order to expand her horizons. Lorie stated, It was a hard decision and it took a lot of thought. She said the main reason for en- listing is because of the ad- venture, being involved, and being able to travel to dif- ferent areas. Dedication and hardwork have earned Shelena Clay- pool special recognition. She has been a member of the Westmoreland High School Eagle Marching Band for five years. Her individual interest in band led her to become a drum major. She has filled this position for a little more than one and a half years. One of Shelena's responsibilities as Drum Major is to assist Mrs. Gar- ner and to run through the rehearsals. Shelena says, Band has helped me grow up and assume responsibil- ities. The Double A season began with the defeat of Springfield 7-6. This victory raised their hopes for a successful season. Going into the Double A season was a tremendous challenge, ac- cording to Coach Roger Perry, but that challenge was met by our young men. Although their destiny wasn't to go to the playoffs, the Eagles did go to the Highlander Braggin' Bowl in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Coach Perry added It was a trip made with a class bunch of boys, and a trip that I will never forget. The Eagles defeated Sea- more County with a score of 24-7. Although the team will have to go through a rebuilding process Q8 seniors are leaving, taking with them 21 years of playing experi- encel, they will enter the new season with confidence and class . if, , '-.,Q.,,- -A Q --jeep:--, Y.. 1, ,,.,.,,,. He credits another teacher, an English teacher from high school, for turning his life around. She instilled in me a feeling of self confidence. She made me feel like I was someone special. She also taught an Honors History Class and when I approached her about being in her class, she said that she would be delighted. It gave me a sense of self-esteem and belonging. These negative and positive experiences motivated him to enter the field of education. He wants to ensure that all students be treated fairly and equally. Over the past several years you have worked and studied, and now you are here, ready to begin your lives as members of the adult community. For some of you, this will mean a job and the responsibilities of family living. For others, this will mean college and further years of study and preparation. Whatever course your future takes, it is my sincere hope that you will look back on your years here as having prepared you to meet and deal with the challenges that life will present. The best of luck and congratulations to the Class of 88. They shook hands and the young man did something that will never be forgotten by him. He sincerely thanked Mr. Ferguson for all that he had done for him. This moment is a special one for him because he had done for him only what he had tried to do for all of his students. The thank you helped him to realize that the job he was doing was important and that he was doing it effectively. According to Mr. Ferguson, this experience has been a motivating factor for me to continue in education. Rita Garner Once upon a time I had a Sophomore English Class. In this class one day a girl decided to announce to the class and to me that she loved me. The statement was a surprise to every- one but her. Unfortunately due to a sinus problem I was having at the time fand probably momentary high blood pressureb my nose began to bleed. Without an explanation Qand no handkerchief! I left the room. When I returned about two minutes later the girl was in her seat all was quiet and class resumed. H.. 118 w4....-iw' Qu' Left to right: Lou Day, Francis Perry, Carol Borders, Helen Lawson, Ruby Graves, Doris Anderson. Not Pictured: Bonnie Adcock. My most classic moment was when the Annual Staff dedicated the annual to me. This was something I'll always remember and be very grateful for it. Doris Anderson One day I was using one of our big kettles, I burned the food in it. I thought, I'll put some Scaleaway in the pot to help clean it. Granny Francis came along and she put some clorox in it. The two chemicals mixed. It looked like a witches brew. The odor was so awful Lou couldn't speak. Ruby poured it out the back door. She thought it was going to eat her tires off. We still laugh about it. Carol Borders I can't remember a classic moment while working in the cafete- ria, but I do remember one time. I took a bite of cornbread, the other workers were on the other end of the caferteria, and didn't know until it was over. I almost choked to death on the corn- bread. It was funny when it was over. But they could have been absent a worker, without knowing what had happened. Lou Day I have worked for eleven years in the cafeteria and one Valen- tine's Day they came with a beautiful pot of flowers. The card said, From your Secret Admirer, To Ruby. I made a statement that my husband didn't buy the pot of flowers, I suspected every- body else. I didn't take the flowers home that day. I tried to find a way to tell him first. When Kenneth got home he said he would have gotten me something for Valentines Day but he just didn't have time. I said that's all right someone has got in front of you. We had the biggest argument we had ever had in eighteen years. When you think you know someone like a book, you will find out you don't really know them as good as you thought you did. After all of this Kenneth had gotten the flowers for me. Ruby Graves Several years ago the cafeteria staff would cook for the Junior and Senior proms. This particular time we had lamb steaks, fresh strawberry shortcake, punch, etc. We would cook it in the cafete- ria and take it down to the gym the best way we could. This particular time we decided to take our punch on the small tables. We spilled it all the way to the gym. Finally. some parents decid- ed to help us since we were having a hard time. We got on the back of this truck with our white uniform pants on a rode back to the cafeteria. Guess what, when we got off we had black grease all over our pants. We didn't have any clean ones to put on and had to wear them the rest of the night while we worked. It was very embarrassing because this was a very special night. We really laughed and had alot of fun about this. Helen Lawson 9 RIGHT: Do you need me? is what Felisha Braswell seems to be saying as she peeks through the office window. HIGH Striving to conquer new challenges - pulling hopes and dreams into reaching distance. As the new year be- gins, the Junior High students come in con- tact with new chal- lenges and exciting adventures. Adjusting to a new en- vironment, along with new teachers, classes, and friends are a few of the obstacles the seventh graders are forced to overcome. Even though they are the new students of our school, they show their Eagle Spirit by helping us out at pep- rallies and other school events. Not being the youn- gest student is a major factor for the eighth graders. As they have already adjusted to their surroundings, they enjoy spending time with their friends. Along with more responsibilities, they face harder sub- jects and more home- work! As they strive to con- quer these new chal- lenges, they pull their hopes and dreams into reaching distance. For reality may be seen to- day, but Classic Mo- ments will last forev- er. 'wr LEFT: Josh Graves sneaks a peek at the camera from Mrs. Wootten's reading class. Vince Lombardi CO GR TUL Dedication, hard work, and having the will to win were the main objec- tives the Junior High football team held on to as they went undefeated through the season of 87 . Coach Kelley commented, Motivating this group was especially easy, you just reminded them that they were the Westmoreland Eagles . Motivation proved to be working as the Jr. Ea- gles came home with an C8-05 record. An important quality which took them a long way was their attitude and good sportsmanship. Coach Hon- eycutt added, Their good attitude will take them a long way in whatev- er they want to do, whether it be ath- letics or just living a full life. As most people seem to spotlight the Big Eagles, we should keep our eye on the Little Eagles, too. You don't always have to be big in size, to be big in class. Fewer student drop-outs and better facilities seem to be im- portant factors among the faculty at W.H.S. The students mainly want a school of which they can be proud. As the walls and our dreams climb their way to the top, so does our reputation. Although we are looking forward to at- tending our new school, we still show our Eagle Spirit while we wait. Her goal has always been to help people and that's why she became first a teacher and then a counselor. Mrs. Garrett felt that by being a counselor she could help students with problems and with their future education. A FAREWELL WITH CLASS Billy Caldwell is a senior at Westmore- land High School. He has gone to school here all his life. Now in his thirteenth year of school Billy hasn't missed a day since he started. He said the reason he did it was he didn't want to stay at home. In addition, he is striving to beat his brother Doug's record. Billy says his par- ents inspired him not to miss any school. There aren't very many students that ac- complish what Billy is trying. Billy deserves a classic farewell for his attempt to leave W.H.S. with a perfect record. f A 1 v 1 X X K 1 -f.: ,b -- N F2 , 'ff 9 ,151 , 'K : I . .
