TO THE CLASS OE '64: Somewhere I have read that only the open minded are teachable. This is true, but G. K. Chesterton has said, Merely having an open mind is nothing. The obiect of opening the mind as of opening the mouth is to shut it again on something solid. The inference is clear. As the mouth closing on food starts the digestive process which changes the food to meet the physical need, so closing the mind on new ideas starts the process ot mental diges- tion which changes these ideas into workable answers to many problems. No worthwhile solution to any prob- lem has come from a completely open or a completely closed mind. As you graduate knowing this, the challenge of the world's problems comes directly to you. For it is from the opening and the closing of minds like yours that sometime the cures tor the ills of mankind will develop. I ask you simply, What ills will you cure? Best wishes to each of you for an interesting, challeng- ing and satisfying adult lite. Sincerely, O ouaiel jkl , DONALD H. CRAINE SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL The Catcher in the Rye William S.
