Band 3-L fat Clinton, Band l-2 Orchestra 1-2 CR IE 0F THE H0011 HIP 54 In the fall of 1950, after eight years of boot training, 35 male and ll female landlubbers boarded the Good Ship '54, weighed anchor, and started their four-year voyage. While working toward their vacation cruise, they sponsored a movie and a dance. They proved they were good, as well as bad, actors this year when they won the One-Act Play Contest, with their masterpiece, nFoxy Grandman. The leaders on the first leg of the voyage were: Skipper, Mrs. Slkes: Captain, Richard Moose: lst mate, Walt Lauber: Log-keeper, Shirley Clark: and Purser, Leon Smith. In the second year, the walls of the Good Ship '54, resounded to the strains of nShrlmp Boats Are Comlng,u which, these ingenious Shlpmates soon changed to nSophomores Are Comingu. To raise money, two dances were sponsored by the gay crew. HDa1sy Maen and HL1ttle Abnern were featured in the first dance, a leap-year hornpipe. This good ship's company was piloted over the waves by their Skipper, Mrs. Freeman: Captain, Harold Mathis: lst mate, Walt Lauber: Log-keeper, Shirley Clark: and Purser, Leon Smith. The third year found our seasoned mariners far out on the high seas. Ambitious crew that they were, they sold stationery and wax, sponsored both a movie and a dance and produced a lively play entitled, HThe Honeymoon is Overn. The helmsmen who guided the crew on these perilous adventures were: Skipper, Mr. Lewis: Captain, Richard Moose: lst mate, Carol Creamer: Log-keeper, Shirley Clark: and Purser, Leon Smith. This year's voyage was cllmaxed by a day's shore leave at Green Lake. Because of the many storms that raged during the past years, only 28 crew members: 19 male and 9 female, survived to start the last year's voyage. Mr. Grant, the Skipper: walt Lauber, the Captain: Harold Mathis, the lst mate: Shirley Clark, the Log-keeper: and Leon Smith, the Purser, were chosen to chart the course of the final voyage. All the crew pitched ln to give the ship that needed push toward the last port of call--Graduation. They worked up steam by using a booth at the School Fair, the annual magazine campaign, a class play: HPhantom Bells,H a mlnstrel show, and various other activities as fuel. All crew members turned to with a will and the ship found its way through troubled waters to a successful termination of the long cruise. At Easter time the crew enjoyed a long-anticipated vacation cruise to New York City. The docking of the Ship was commemorated by the Commencement Ball. A few days later each Tar stood proudly on top-deck to receive his Honorable Discharge. Before the crew disbanded, each to go his own way, they held one final sh1p's muster at Green Lake. And so the Good Ship '54 now stands deserted in her hidden cove at Westmoreland, never to sail again except when the memories of her crew, shall cause her to again weigh anchor, and again travel over the route which she so gallantly sailed as a unit of the Westmoreland Central Fleet. THA K Mr. Cosselman, who helped us carry out our theme by putting his Mechanical drawing skill to work. Mr. Lewis, who held classes in a hullabaloo of noise so that we could work in the Senior Room. Mr. Hethersll, who excused class members from Social Studies class, and, in addition, took over an Eng- lish class to allow Hr. Grant to help us. Mrs. Philligg, who saw the library turned upside down during that 'critical' regents week, a d who looks ed up innumerable references for us. Mr. Kelly, who bequeathed his store of nautical terms to 'us 1andlubbsrs.' Mrs. Piletts, who allowed our class to use the typewriters. Arlene Bennett, Barbara Storey, Muriel Grains and Agnes Dzgongag, Juniors, who get a Senior grade A when rated on co-operation. Richard Froschsmer, who slaved for days to make dream wheels and anchors turn into real ones. hr. Grains and Miss Jenkins, who patiently allowed the office to be invaded at all times by the '!ear's End staff. Hr. Grant, our incomparable advisor and friend, who spared no effort to make our Yearbook 'tops' in every soy. The day was lively little man slapped me all these years? I was just 1965 I was strolling down the main street of a little town in California warm and I'd just begun thinking of dinner and a cool drink when a on the shoulder and roared, 'Yhy, BRUCE DE FEES, where have you been wishing I lcnew where all my old classmates were when you came along. But, what are we standing here in the hot sun for? Come on down to my yacht and we will go for a cruise and cool off a b1t.' '0. I,,D1ck,' I said, as I followed my former classmate,RICH.ARD BEIXiES.aboard his palatial 100-foot boat, which I noticed was named the 'Lorene.' It was cooler on you doing now Bruoet' '0h, I've bought after all my old girl the yacht and,as we chatted,we sailed further than we had intended. 'What are asked Dick, as he held the yacht on course. the Vernon Downs Race Track. I own a string of 5 horses and l've named them friends. As we were talking,a terrible calm decended on us. 'It looks like e stom is coming up.'l shouted Dick. In a minute the storm was upon us. It grew darker and darker. We could not see the bow of the vessel and we were tossed about like a piece of driftwood. he ship could not weather much more and I had given up hope of ever seeing my wife and 8 kids again, when suddenly the boat stopped pitching and began to ride calmy on the waves. To either side of us the storm raged on. Before I could say anything a man climbed out of the sea and over the rail and faced Dick and me. 'It's Ihvey Jones, himself! Dick whispered into my ear. I stared at the -uler of the sea in amsement. Instead of Mir. seaweed was protruding from under his slouched captain's hat, his pea,1acket was covered with barnacles, and his seaboots dripped foam and sea spray. 'What are you doing in my private watersl' Davey boomed, scowling at us. 'We meant no han, 'Dick answered quickly, 'Look, here is a picture of a menaid for you.' Vell,' said Davey, 'one good turn deserves another, look over the port side of your ship,' Ve did, and there, in the clear we-ters, we noticed the waves were forming figures. 'Look. I cried, 'I see NANCY PARKER, and it looks as if she is still drawing p1ctures. 'l'hat'sr rigxt she is now the head of the Fine Arts Studio in NW Yofksn said Davey. 'And did you know that SHIRLEY CLARK has her own cartoon strip in the New York Timesl' l'here's RICHARD MO0SE, cried Dick. 'It looks as if he is giving a lecture. Davey said, He's running for U. S. 'That looks like I-'RANK LAURI, I said, 'Is he counting monsyi' 'No,' said Davey, 'that's one of his secretaries counting it for him, he has much to Inch to count by himself. A. is known as the most active club in Westmoreland. when the Future Farmers set out to do something, it usually ends up a success. Their first activity since the last Yearbook was a Donkey-Ball game. This has become an annual event among the boys and another is planned for March 12, 1950. The Westmoreland Chapter is always well represented at the State Convention: with a member in the State F. F. A. Band, one in the Chorus and its official delegate. They have participated in many Cattle Judging Contests, including: Boonville and Vernon Fairs and State competition at Delhi. Peas and sweet corn were the Club's summer projects, with a community spirit prevailing in all its work. Each year the School Fair is sponsored by the Future Farmers and proves to be a valuable source of funds. This fall the Club sent four members to the National Sonvention at Kansas City. The Chapter also has a basketball team which has been very successful this season. Officers who head the Chapter are: President: Leon Smith Vice-President: Wayne Clinch Secretary: Walt Lauber Treasurer: John Sobik Reporter: Norman Cheney Sentinel: Arlo Kitchen Advisor: Paul Craner 29 FHA 1 T B. The Council makes recommendations and. suggestions for things to better the school and is organized to promote better faculty student relations. In the autumn the Student Council holds its annual election of President and Vice President. The candidates, who are elected by the student body CGrades 7-121, are the'two representatives chosen by the Senior Class. By talcing in money from home basketball games and by selling soft drinks at hole activities, the Student Council is able to buy majorette and cheerleading imiforms, rqmnerate athletic event officials and provide six assembly programs for the entertainment of the student body. Delegates from the Student Council are sent to an Association of Student Councils Conference, held at different area schools each year, and the Council also exchanges visits with other schools. Oster, E. Evans, J. Feathorbay, J. Senior, so Sith, Ea GI'0.n, Ao ' '1+1 P gg. Gait JH EAA yggggu, The Varsity basketball team of 1953-5h began a year with great ootentialities. Individually they were a wonderful grouo of boys but due to injuries sustained in football their full stride could never be reached. Let's say they were on the rim of having an outstanding year but fate would not see it. They, however, had a great season and were a credit to the school and them- selves. It was a pleasure working with them and having them for four years. qQY,axx5'V4?O0f5 Westmoreland's 1953-5b Junior Varsity squad was a credit to their school. Their constant im- provement brought them a good season's record of nine wins and sevenlosses. The student body and fans enjoyed the aggressive play and team soirit characteristic of this team. While John Coleman, Jim Meskan, Jack Murfit, Pat Smith and Ron Williams were the players successful in win- ing nlaces on 'the first f1ve', all the boys de- serve congratulations for their contributions to a winning team. t fs 'D-C.,+fwf6Cf az y8Am14 K Q1 X .4 Atv-if is k ' nf e : sg.
