Aside from sports, the freshmen went in for the other extra-curricular activities wholeheartedly. The leader of these activities was president Moan. He was handicapped by having Stu Kline as vice-president and Dave McCormick as secretary of the treasury. Nan Reese was secretary. She has been writing notes ever since. In the field of music the mixed chorus was begun in our first year. Many freshmen boys joined the chorus and with the help of their voices it really sounded mixed. We were annually represented in Forensic League competition by drummer Mary lane Frye, drum-major Lu Hoffman, and clarinetist Ianet Kels. The latter narrowly missed out in the finals as she forgot her clarinet. The class play our first year was Growing Pains. It was a very amusing comedy, surpased only by Life With Father, which was to come three years later. So much for our fresh- men year. The gala event of our next year was the big dance- The Spring Swing. The sophomore class party was a great success, too. Quiz-master Macy Kaminsky conducted an enjoyable quiz program, using for his script a very diffi- cult second grade entrance examination. The evening was climaxed by dancing. Besides staging these successful activities, our class was right up on top scholastically. One marking period seven- teen of the eighty-five students in our class made the honor roll. This was actually twenty per cent of the class. The faculty began pleading with us to stop studying. Many of us were glad to oblige. The class went straight Republican in our sophomore year by putting into office, Spurge Iohns, Ken Heffley, Pat Hoffman, and Willy Hlivko for the offices of president, vice- president, secretary, and treasurer respectively. In football that year Westmont was a power-house, losing only to Somerset, our jinx team, on a mud-soaked field. The reason for the success of our football team was rL..mci i.....ff. 1' gm 'J propriately enough, The Iack O' Lantern lump. The school got a new look that year by enlarging Price Field and adding a baseball diamond. A wire fence was erected completely around the field. which was now con- sidered impregnable. The band and cheerleaders were also given new, snappy-looking uniforms. The cheerleaders, in- cidentally, signed Pat Hoffman for a two year contract. Speaking of the new look, many junior girls joined the Y-Teens. As part of initiation they were required to dress in a very peculiar way, and this they certainly did. Their in- side-out dresses and upside-down skirts were the last word in style. The junior class party was enjoyed by all. The Mum- bles Quartet stole the show and sang encore after encore until completely exhausted. After some games and dances, the junior girls served for refreshments the food they had made in home economics over the past three years. The football team Won six games and lost only to In- diana and Ferndale. The latter was a 6-U upset at the Point Stadium in a game in which bathing suits would have been more appropriate than football togs. In basketball we again won the tri-county league. Not to be outdone by their big brothers, the I. V. also repeat- ed as league champions. This was becoming a habit. How- ever, we did not quite reach the state finals as we lost to a precision-perfect Conemaugh outfit in the opening play- off game. Nevertheless, we entered and won the St. Fran- cis tournament With little difficulty. Track and baseball were both gaining headway at W,-U. Y. as the sports were attracting more and more fans. Thus, we have peeked back into some of the highlights of our first three years of high school, taking us right up to the time of our senior year.
