This year seemed to be a year of even greater achievement. Much was done to improve the athletic field this year. A very purposeful fence was built around it, and the spectators of our gridiron sport were indeed very happy to find that the board had purchased new bleachers for the other side of the field. Finally, the football games were made even more colorful by the new band uniforms and banners for which the school board was also responsible. Many school projects such as The Phoenician, The Yodler and the purchase of athletic equip- ment, are subsidized by the board also. These twelve men also take care of the important routine business which it takes to run a school correctly. We gratefully acknowledge the services of Frank T Iames who serves both as secretary of the 1o1nt board and as super intendent of grounds and buildings lCJOl fARD q A N lr xx sl Q Seven SCI . 'x Four long years ago some eighty-five Wide-eyed freshmen entered W.-U. Y. Since that time these students have come up in the World scholastically athletically and so cially They are the senior class of 48 i Coulson president, Iack Buser vice president, Pippi The eniors began the year by electing Charles Puma treasurer, and Kay Miller secretary. On December 5 the annual class play was presented. Miss Allendorfer directed the production of Our Hearts Were Young and Gay which starred Sallie Watson Anderson and Pippi Puma as Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kimbrough. Soon after the play was given the Christmas dance took place. Every- one had a wonderful time at the Sno-Ball including Santa Claus, who presented pop-corn balls. Herb Sherer, lack Buser, and Bob Homonay represented the seniors in Student Council. This organization Was ably led by Iohn Hipp. The seniors proved themselves to be apt leaders in other organizations: Iohn Hipp in the W-Club and Hi-Y, Sallie Watson Anderson in the Y-Teens, Earle McKeever in the Key Club, Bob Squire in the Spanish Club, Rosalyn Romanoff in the French Club, Sonny Holtzman in the Photo Club, lack Stinson in the Biology Club, and Aileen Shaffer in the Cvym Club. Varsity lettermen were numerous among the seniors. Eight boys earned their awards in foot- ball and four in basketbell. Senior boys also participated in track and baseball. Both boys and girls took part in a Well rounded schedule of intramural sports. They fought vigorously to defend their class in badminton, basketball, baseball, deck tennis, volley ball, and archery. The honor roll usually showed the names of a large number of seniors who worked hard to be scholastically proficient. Much of the success of the senior class is due to the able guidance of Miss Margaret Greer, Miss Roberta Williams, Miss Iosephine Williams, Mr. Carl Engh, and Mr. Leonard Spence. The seniors will leave Westmont High in May well prepared for their futures in college and the business World. , Ltharxcb XQUH. jqtictdfk' mi t Kathrvil Nlluu' N f wxcphivif ft to PRN dent. . -: 'fl-C , , 5 Oxzyrtgliagxlxcrh Vin: rci ALICE MARIE ADAM S Transferred from Ioseph Iohns l Pep Club 2 3 m Club 2 3 Teens 3 4-Chorus 3 4 Yodler 3 Color Guard 4 Phoemclan 4 Semor Play 4 SRLLIE WATSON ANDERSON Watt eens 3 4 Pres Student Counc1l4 Sec 4 W Club 3 4 Intramur alsl 2 3 4 Photo Cub Cheerleadlng 3 4 Gym Club 2 3 4 Semor Play 4 Co Edxtor of Pho emcxan 4 Yodler 3 Managmg Edrtor Pep Clu 2 3 IOSEPHINE ANTINORO Prppy Spamsh Club 3 4 Pep Club 2 3 Intramurals l Gym Club 2 3 4 l.1b Asst 4 Chorus l 2 3 Phoenlclan 4 Yod ler 3 IACK BENNETT Spanlsh Club 3 4 Fo t ball Manager l 2 3 4 Yodler 3 BILL BERNEY In ramurals l 2 3 4 Yodler 3 Basketball 3 Baseball 3 Spamsh Club 3 4 Thirteen THOMAS BIDDLEMAN Brddy Intramurals l 2 3 Baseball Manager 2 RAYSA BoNow Ray Intramurals 2 3 4 Edit Board of Yodler 3 dlt Board of Phoemcrcm 4 YTeens 3 4 Gym Club 2 3 4 french Club 3 4 res S c orus l 2 4 Asst 4 Semor Play Pep Club 2 3 IACK Buszn lntramuralsl 2 3 4 V dent Councll l 2 3 4 Key Club 3 4 PAUL CAMPBELL Wally 2 3 4 W Club 3 ootball l 2 Baseball 2 3 Semor Play 4 Intramurals l 2 3 4 Track l 2 ROLAND CICCONE Spamsh Club 3 4 Foot b l 2 3 4 Sen or ay 4 Intramurals l 2 O estra 1 2 H Y 2 3 Asst Sergeant of Arms 4 W Club 2 3 4 er qeant of Arms 3 4 , AI ' , , . 4- GY , , 4-Y- Y-T , - . 4- , , - ' . Although the majority of the staff were green, Miss Margaret Greer was faithful when they had a deadline to meet, and by the end of the year, the class felt that they had successfully completed their job of getting The Yodler out on time, Along scholastic lines, the class had a fair record with several of the students' names ap- pearing again and again on the honor roll. These include Renato Rodriquez, Simeon Margolis, Miriam Anderson, and Alice Stinely. The juniors promoted the lack O'Lantern lump at Halloween and amazed themselves at its success. As in pre- vious years, this year's staff has attempted to create the best paper up-to-date, and it can be sure that its efforts to produce a well-rounded and interesting collec- tion of news and facts are recognized by the entire student body. Simeon Margolis, the editor, and his competent staff have put their ideas together, .nd as a result, the published copies were read with interest and curiosity by the teach :rs and pupils. The sports staff was guided by Stuart Kline, who did exceedingly Well in informing the students of sports activities. The news of the gossip section was handled by Nancy Reese and associates. The feature writers, make-up editors, and reporters also played an important part in the paper's makeup. Miss Margaret Greer is adviser to the staff, and has helped them greatly with their problems. M o 'The Unfinished Symphony by Schubert and Morning, Noon and Night by Von Suppe. A new swing number entitled Bobby Sox Suite by Walters was particularly well received. Solos were given by lanet Kels, clarinet soloist, Betty Ondrejack, clarinetist, Robert Homonay, trumpet soloist, and Ronald Kelly, sousaphone soloist, Mr. Horner is the musical director of our school sys- tem. Besides leading the high school band and orchestra, he also has charge of both the Iunior High School and the grade school bands. At three o'clock Our Director steps upon the podi- um on the high school stage. He raises his baton and the music begins. If the number is unfamiliar to the band, it may sound rough at first, but soon it is being per- formed with great finesse. When this happens, Mr. Horner receives his reward for his work Next years band shows promise of belng the best that the high school has had in many years Q 1lf s-A :MP '4 it-Q 55 Forty Three , . . lx p q fb R 1 I..-axlipq tht- Corner Sr f lnumlvnxuq rlw Bus Mo- :vi U N 'p , , 'i Q ' - , Q 1 ' Y - f 4' V I I I I ., W ' , I l- . The trio has been very ambitious this year as they participated in many assemblies, sang for a Parent Teachers' Meeting in Southmont, and entered the Forensic League. Beverly Davis, who entered the Forensic League as a soloist, was then replaced by Alice Stinely. A few of their selections this year have been Three Little Maids, Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life, Piper From Over the Way, and ln Silent Night. SBXTETTE The sextette composed of six senior girls made their first appearance at one of the assemblies. Their selec- tions Were The Italian Street Song and You'll Never Walk Alone. These songs Were very Well received and plans were made for the group to sing at the county F, T. A. meeting. Their next school appearance was at Christmas time when the group sang two numbers from the Christ- mas Cantata. This group had not finished their appear- ances as a February assembly showed. This time they sang The Song ls You and a modern arrangement of Chopsticks. A song of a more serious nature, The Lord's Prayer, was chosen for the spring concert. Many outside appearances have been planned since the songs they sing are pleasant to the ear. BAND During sixth period every day the auditorium Was filled with the beautiful land sometimes not so beautifull music of the band. Here fun and play were mixed as the band prepared for their con- cert. This year there are six seniors leaving the band. They are: Bob Homonay, Bob Leabhart, Dave Wil- son, Eileen Shaffer, Elva Long, and Pauline Wertz. Filling the vacant spots in the band are: Luther Hoffman filling in for Bob Homonay, Ronald Kelly for Bob Leabhart, Martin Smith for Dave Wilson. Bill Sides for Elva Long and Pauline Wertz. and lessie Young for Aileen Shaffer. There is plenty of talent coming into the band next year. Let's hope the band does as Well next year as it has done in the past. Nil XIVXI NIUXIININ Fcity Nine lit-'ww L it t 1, A. , IU! l P R l H I ri-fwcriv IJ.,'.
